We only had a short time in Kaunas, so we wanted to make our one proper restaurant meal count. We chose Avilys, a brewery and restaurant tucked inside the Old Town, hoping for a taste of Lithuanian food in a setting with a little more character. Here is our experience, from the atmosphere and beer to what landed on our table, and whether Avilys was worth the stop.

We head downstairs into Avilys, where the restaurant occupies a series of old brick cellars beneath the Old Town. The vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, and low lighting give the room a darker, intimate feel, but it never feels stuffy. The setting is polished enough for a special dinner, yet relaxed enough that we never felt out of place.

We didn’t make a reservation, but we still got a table. From the start, the service was professional and attentive without being intrusive. The staff was helpful when we had questions about the menu and gave us the information we needed without turning the meal into a formal affair. For a restaurant with a more refined setting, Avilys strikes that balance.

We ordered quite quickly, and the evening settled into a comfortable pace from there. Avilys has a clear sense of occasion without trying too hard. The exposed brick, vaulted ceilings and low lighting give the room an atmospheric look, while the tables, glassware and overall presentation add a hint of luxury. It is not traditionally luxurious, but the combination works and gives the restaurant a polished identity that feels appropriate for a dinner in the Old Town.

The tables are positioned fairly close together, so the seating feels a little more compact than we would prefer, particularly when the restaurant fills up. The noise level remained manageable during our visit, though, and the room never felt chaotic. Service was professional and efficient, with our order taken promptly and the staff attentive throughout. Overall, the experience felt well balanced: refined enough to feel like a destination for dinner, but relaxed enough to sit back and enjoy the food and beer simply.

The menu at Avilys takes a broad approach to Lithuanian and European cuisine, with traditional ingredients appearing alongside more contemporary combinations. You will find familiar local dishes such as cepelinai, herring, beetroot soup and smoked pork shank, but also beef tartare, duck, halibut, octopus, risotto and steak, so the selection feels more like a modern restaurant menu than a strictly traditional Lithuanian one. The brewery connection runs through the menu too, with Avilys beer soup, beer ice cream and honey-beer truffles among the more distinctive choices. Prices sit in the mid-to-high range for Kaunas, with mains currently running from around €16 to €33, giving the menu enough variety for a casual meal as well as a longer dinner.

We ordered the herring with leek sour cream, baby potatoes, and pickled onion to share as our only starter. The presentation was impeccable, with each element neatly balanced on the plate, while the combination worked just as well on the palate. The portion was on the smaller side, but perfectly judged for a starter, and the pickled onion’s acidity cut nicely through the richness of the herring and sour cream. A polished opening to the meal.

Our second starter was the duck liver pâté with dark chocolate and cowberry, and it arrived with the same meticulous presentation as the first. The combination sounded bold, but worked beautifully: rich, smooth pâté balanced by the sharpness of the cowberry and the bitterness of the dark chocolate. The portion was again well judged for a starter, and this was another dish we would happily order again.

The pâté arrived with freshly baked bread, presented on a bed of toasted grains that made even the bread service feel considered. We really liked the presentation, and the bread itself was warm and fresh, adding another element to the starter. We probably had more bread than we needed for the relatively small portion of pâté. Still, it was a thoughtful accompaniment and another detail that made the dish feel carefully put together.

For the main course, we chose the pork neck steak with baby potatoes, vegetables and boletus sauce. The pork was tender and well cooked, with the rich mushroom sauce adding plenty of depth, while the vegetables and potato purée kept the plate balanced. The presentation was more classic than the starters, but the flavors were solid and satisfying, making this a dependable main rather than the evening’s most adventurous dish.

This was the standout dish of our meal and an easy Penguin Pick. The duck breast was cooked well, with a crisp exterior and tender, pink center, while the beetroot and blackberry sauce brought the acidity and fruitiness needed to balance the richness of the meat. The potato gratin added a creamy, comforting element, and the plating was precise without becoming fussy. It was the most complete dish we tried at Avilys and the one we would happily order again.

We found the drinks a good match for the food, particularly the house-brewed beers, which suited the Lithuanian-inspired dishes well. We also had red wine with the richer mains, and it paired nicely with the duck and pork. Prices felt reasonable for this level of restaurant, especially considering the brewery setting.

Overall, we really enjoyed our evening at Avilys. The combination of the brick cellar setting, attentive service, well-presented dishes, and good drinks made it feel like a special dinner without becoming overly formal. Some dishes stood out more than others, but overall the food was well executed, and the meal had a clear sense of place, particularly with the brewery connection. For a short stay in Kaunas, it was a lovely little evening and a restaurant we were happy to have chosen, and would choose again.

⭐⭐☆

Avilys delivers a cozy Old Town dining experience that combines Lithuanian-inspired food, house-brewed beer and a well-judged level of refinement. The brick cellar setting gives the restaurant its identity, while the service remains professional without becoming overly formal. We particularly enjoyed the starters and the duck breast, our clear Penguin Pick, and the house beers were a natural match for the meal. A few portions were on the smaller side, but the food was well presented and thoughtfully composed. For us, Avilys was a very pleasant evening in Kaunas and a restaurant we would happily return to.

Would We Recommend It? ✅ Yes

Best For: Lithuanian Cuisine • Beer Lovers • Couples • Special Dinners • Old Town Dining • Food and Beer Pairings • Cozy Evenings • Trying Local Flavors

Less Suitable For: Quick Meals • Very Casual Dining • Large Groups Wanting Lots of Space • Budget Dining • Anyone Looking for a Bright, Modern Restaurant

Our meal for two people and one hungry penguin came to €91 in total, or around €45.50 per person. That puts Avilys on the higher end of Kaunas dining, especially compared with more casual restaurants, but the price reflects the setting, attentive service, presentation, and dish quality. We felt the overall experience justified the bill for a special dinner, although this is not somewhere we would choose for an everyday meal.

  • Best Time to Visit: Avilys works well for lunch or dinner, but we would choose an evening visit when the cellar setting feels most atmospheric. We visited for dinner and found it comfortable and relaxed.
  • Reservations: We visited without a reservation and managed to get a table, but Avilys accepts reservations and booking ahead is sensible for busy evenings or larger groups.
  • Parking & Public Transport: Avilys is in Kaunas Old Town, so it is easiest to reach on foot when sightseeing in the center.
  • Payment Methods: Card payment is available, although it is always useful to have a little cash when traveling.
  • Dress Code: Smart casual. No need to dress formally, but the atmospheric cellar setting and polished dining room make it suitable for a slightly more dressed-up dinner.
  • Brewery Tours: Avilys also offers a 45–60 minute brewery tour and beer tasting, currently priced at €25 per person and including beer tastings and snacks.
