Some restaurants call for a light appetite. Smoke House Košice is not one of them. Built around smoked meats, pastrami, and ribs, this is the kind of place where coming hungry feels less like advice and more like preparation. We arrived ready to work our way through the menu, starting with the dishes Smoke House is best known for. Here is what landed on our table, what stood out, what we would order again, and whether it’s worth your time.

A few steps away from Košice’s busy main street, Smoke House feels a little removed from the bustle of the city center despite being only a few steps away. Once inside, the atmosphere shifts noticeably darker: deep wood paneling, black furniture, exposed hanging lights, and warm pools of light give the dining room a moody, almost old-school steakhouse feel. The yellow seating adds a small pop of color, but overall, the interior stays dark and understated, which somehow feels fitting for a restaurant built around smoke, meat, and slow cooking.

Nothing feels overly polished or theatrical, and we liked that. It feels inviting rather than formal, the kind of restaurant where you can settle in, order several plates for the table and stay for a while. The service matched that atmosphere: friendly, relaxed, and welcoming from the start. Our first impression was that Smoke House knows exactly what kind of place it wants to be, and if you like pastrami, ribs, smoked meat, and generous comfort food, this is somewhere we would happily return to hungry.

Smoke House has a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere that feels more like a casual smokehouse than a polished restaurant, which fits the food it serves. Tables are spaced out, so even as more people arrived, the dining room never felt cramped or overly busy, and a good-sized outdoor terrace tucked into the alley also works well on warmer days. The noise level stayed low throughout our dinner, making it easy to talk; only a handful of tables were occupied when we arrived, but the restaurant filled up noticeably by the time we left.

Service was one of the stronger parts of the experience. The staff was friendly, prompt, and genuinely happy to help, without hovering, and both drinks and dishes arrived at a good pace. We had contacted Smoke House before our visit as well, and they replied quickly and helpfully, so the positive service started before we even walked through the door. The atmosphere itself may not be the main reason to come here, but it is comfortable, unpretentious, and well-suited to the concept: you settle in, order a table full of smoked meat, and let the food do most of the talking.

The menu at Smoke House centers on American-style barbecue and slow-smoked meat, with pastrami, ribs, pulled meats, burgers, and sandwiches doing most of the heavy lifting. The concept feels more rooted in American BBQ than inspired by it: chef-owner Rasto Varchola spent time learning smoking techniques in the U.S., particularly in Tennessee and Virginia, before bringing that experience back to Košice.

This is a very come-hungry menu. Portions are generous, meat takes center stage, and many dishes are built around the smoker rather than an overly complicated list of ingredients. We wanted to get a real feel for what the kitchen does best, so instead of sticking to one main each, we ordered across the menu and shared several dishes, including some of the Smoke House signatures. This gave us a much better idea of where the kitchen really delivers and which dishes we would order again.

Slices of pastrami garnished with capers and mustard seeds on a yellow plate at Smoke House Košice

Pastrami is one of the things you have to order at Smoke House, so we started with two portions of the pastrami carpaccio. The meat was tender, thinly sliced, and full of smoky, peppery flavor, paired with pickled mustard seeds, capers, lemon oil, and microgreens. The thick slices of sourdough were properly toasted, crisp at the edges but still substantial enough to carry the pastrami. Everything worked, although we found ourselves wanting one sharper, more acidic element, perhaps sauerkraut or another pickle, to cut through the richness and bring the whole plate into better balance.

The beef short ribs were an easy one of the strongest dishes of the meal. The meat was so tender that the bone pulled away, while still retaining enough structure and juiciness to avoid becoming mushy. The glaze was rich, glossy, and deeply savory, with a gentle sweetness that complemented the beef rather than masking its smoky character. It is not an enormous portion, but the richness makes the size just right, and it’s a dish we would order again without hesitation.

We ordered onion rings with the ribs, and they had a good initial crunch, with a crisp, golden coating and onion inside that stayed soft without becoming soggy. Where they lost us was in the frying: the coating held on to a little too much oil, leaving a heavier finish than we would have liked, especially alongside the richer smoked meats. A touch less grease and perhaps more seasoning would have made them much more memorable. They were fine as a side, but compared with the quality of the beef short ribs, these felt fairly average and not something we would specifically return for.

Pastrami sandwich with creamy sauce and microgreens topped with pickles on a skewer on a plate at Smoke House Košice

The pastrami sandwich was one of the most complete dishes we tried, with every component doing its job. The pastrami was tender and smoky, the sauerkraut cut through the richness, and the Emmental added a creamy, salty layer. At the same time, the chili pickles brought acidity, crunch, and a welcome little kick of heat. Most importantly, the sourdough was properly toasted, giving the sandwich enough structure to hold a very generous amount of filling without becoming soggy. Smoky, rich, sour, spicy, and crisp in all the right places, this sandwich was well-balanced and substantial enough to be a meal on its own.

The Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich was the surprise highlight of the entire meal and our absolute favorite. Tender beef, melted cheddar, mushrooms, peppers, onion, jalapeños, mayonnaise, and crispy onions came together remarkably well, with enough richness, acidity, and heat to keep every bite interesting. What really made it for us, though, was the soft bread with its slightly sweet edge, which worked beautifully against the savory filling and immediately reminded us of eating cheesesteaks during our time in Philadelphia. It was messy, generous, and unapologetically indulgent, but importantly, the flavors remained balanced rather than simply heavy.

We ordered the homemade fries as a side to share, although they were accidentally missed from our original order and arrived later with an apology from the staff. Unfortunately, they came almost straight from the fryer and were far too hot to eat immediately, so our first enthusiastic bite nearly cost us our lips. Once they cooled down, though, they proved worth the wait: frying them twice in beef fat gives them a properly crisp exterior, a soft, fluffy center, and a richer flavor than standard fries. The mayonnaise dip came in a generous portion, while the chipotle dip was our favorite, bringing a smoky, spicy kick that worked particularly well with the fries’ richness.

The tonka bean and bourbon vanilla panna cotta was exactly the kind of dessert this meal needed. The panna cotta itself was smooth, creamy, and delicate, with the vanilla and tonka bean giving it plenty of aroma without making it overly sweet. On top, the generous layer of tart sauce added freshness and acidity, cutting through both the dessert’s creaminess and the richness of everything we had eaten before it. A particularly nice touch was the tableside presentation, with the sauce poured over the panna cotta just before serving. Fresh, balanced, and surprisingly light, it was a great finish to a very meat-heavy dinner.

The Yuzu Tropical non-alcoholic beer was another unexpected highlight. Bright, citrusy, and properly refreshing, the yuzu brought a pleasant tartness while the tropical notes added fruitiness without pushing the drink into overly sweet territory. It also worked particularly well with the rich, smoky food, cleansing the palate between bites. This is the kind of non-alcoholic beer that feels like a drink worth ordering in its own right, rather than a substitute for regular beer, and we wish more restaurants served it.

We also tried the Firebrews Street Dog 11°, which worked well with the smokehouse menu. It had malt at the front, bitterness on the finish, and enough carbonation to cut through the fat and salt of the pastrami and beef. It never competed with the food, which is exactly what we wanted from a beer alongside this kind of meal. A good pairing for the heavier dishes on the table.

Taken as a whole, Smoke House delivered where it mattered most: the meat and the smoker. The pastrami showed why it sits at the center of the menu; the beef short ribs came away from the bone with almost no effort, and the Reuben brought together smoke, fat, acidity, and heat in the right proportions. Our biggest surprise was the Philadelphia cheesesteak, which became our favorite dish of the evening and took us straight back to eating cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. Not everything reached the same level: the onion rings were too oily for us, and the fries were initially forgotten and arrived much later. Once they cooled enough to eat, however, the double frying in beef fat delivered the crunch we wanted. The panna cotta then did exactly what a dessert should do at the end of a meal built around smoked meat, bringing acidity and freshness rather than another layer of heaviness.

Service also deserves credit. Staff were fast, helpful, and present throughout the meal, regularly checking whether we needed anything without interrupting the flow of dinner. After our starter, our used cutlery was cleared and replaced with a new set before the next dishes arrived, a small detail that we always appreciate and one that showed attention to the table. When they forgot the fries, they acknowledged the mistake and apologized rather than trying to brush it aside. The restaurant was clean, the rest of the meal paced well, and our earlier communication with the team was just as efficient. Smoke House is not flawless, but the kitchen has a clear point of view, the strongest dishes justify a visit, and the service supports rather than distracts from what is happening on the plate. We came for the pastrami and smoked meat, but surprisingly, it is that Philadelphia cheesesteak we are still thinking about.

★★☆

Smoke House Košice delivers a smokehouse experience built around meat, generous portions, and a kitchen that balances richness with acidity and texture. The pastrami deserves its place at the center of the menu; the beef short ribs were a 5/5 dish, and the Reuben was well put together, but surprisingly, the Philadelphia cheesesteak became our favorite dish of the evening. A few weaker points stood out, particularly the oily onion rings and the forgotten fries. Still, the quality of the main dishes, helpful service, and attention throughout dinner easily outweighed them. Come hungry, order from across the menu, and don’t leave without trying something made with their pastrami.

Would We Recommend It? ✅ Yes, especially for meat lovers and anyone looking for something beyond the usual Košice restaurant menu

Best For: Pastrami • Beef Short Ribs • Philadelphia Cheesesteak • Smoked Meat • Generous Portions • Casual Dinners • Sharing Several Dishes

Less Suitable For: Light Meals • Vegetarians • Fine Dining • Anyone Looking for a Quiet, Formal Dinner

Our meal for three people and one very hungry penguin came to €102 before tip and €110 in total, working out to around €34 per person before tip. Considering how much we ordered, including several pastrami dishes, beef short ribs, the Philadelphia cheesesteak, sides, dessert, and drinks, we found the pricing fair for the quality and quantity of food on the table. Smoke House is not a budget dinner, but the portions are generous, the meat takes time and skill to prepare, and several dishes were strong enough that we would happily order them again. For a full smokehouse feast rather than a quick meal, we felt we got good value for our money.

  • Best Time to Visit: Smoke House works best for a proper dinner rather than a quick bite, particularly if you want to order several dishes and share. Arrive hungry: the menu is built around smoked meat, sandwiches, and substantial portions, and it is worth trying more than one signature.
  • Reservations: The restaurant became noticeably busier as our evening went on, so booking ahead is worth considering for dinner, particularly on Fridays and weekends. The restaurant also has outdoor terrace seating in the alley when the weather allows.
  • Parking & Public Transport: Smoke House is right in Košice’s Old Town, just off the main street, making it easy to reach on foot while exploring the center. If you are driving, plan to use one of the public parking options nearby and walk the final stretch.
  • Payment Methods: Card payment is available, making it straightforward if you are visiting without cash.
  • Dress Code: Casual. Despite the darker, steakhouse-like interior, Smoke House is relaxed, not formal. Jeans, trainers, and everyday travel clothes fit the setting perfectly.
