Every road trip needs a grand finale, and ours came in the form of Schafberg. It was the last big stop of our long weekend through Austria, and although we originally planned to squeeze in another hike, our bodies had other ideas. With a couple of minor injuries slowing us down, we traded hiking boots for train tickets, and we could not have picked a better alternative. While you can hike all the way to Schafberg’s 1,783-meter summit, you can also let the historic SchafbergBahn do the hard work for you. Within minutes, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking Alpine scenery and some of the most beautiful views in the Salzkammergut region. Where Is Schafberg Located

Schafberg is in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, rising above the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee near the charming town of St. Wolfgang. It’s one of the most iconic mountains in the area and makes an excellent day trip from Salzburg, Hallstatt, or the surrounding lake towns. We actually spent a night in St. Wolfgang before visiting Schafberg, and we’d highly recommend doing the same if your itinerary allows. Wolfgangsee is beautiful in its own right, and staying overnight lets you explore the town at a relaxed pace before catching the first SchafbergBahn train the next morning.

How to Get to Schafberg

• By Car: Drive to St. Wolfgang, where you’ll find several paid parking lots within walking distance of the SchafbergBahn station.
• By Public Transport: Take a train to Salzburg or Bad Ischl, then continue by regional bus to St. Wolfgang Schafbergbahnhof.
• By Boat: During the season, you can also arrive by boat across Lake Wolfgangsee, making the journey to Schafberg even more scenic before boarding the cog railway.

Riding the Historic SchafbergBahn

Although we usually choose hiking over trains, Schafberg was one of those places where we wanted to experience both. Unfortunately, with a couple of minor injuries, hiking to the summit wasn’t an option, so we decided to book the SchafbergBahn both ways. Looking back, we’re really glad we did.

The SchafbergBahn isn’t just any train. Opened in 1893, it is Austria’s steepest steam-powered cog railway and one of the oldest mountain railways in the world still in operation. Instead of relying on wheel grip alone, the train uses a toothed rack rail in the middle of the track, allowing it to climb the mountain’s steep slopes with ease.

The journey from St. Wolfgang to the summit takes around 35 minutes, traveling at a leisurely pace of roughly 9–10 km/h. That slow speed is part of the experience, giving you plenty of time to soak in the incredible scenery as forests gradually give way to panoramic views over the Salzkammergut lakes. We found the tickets quite pricey (expect to pay around €60+ per adult for a return ticket, depending on the season). Still, it is undoubtedly a memorable experience and a highlight of visiting Schafberg.

What to Expect at the Schafberg Summit

First of all, epic views. We’ve explored quite a bit of Austria over the years and climbed our fair share of mountains, but we can confidently say that Schafberg offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the country. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree view stretching across the Alps and as many as 11 shimmering lakes of the Salzkammergut region.

The views begin almost immediately. As soon as you step off the SchafbergBahn, you’ll find the first viewpoint right next to the station. From there, continue your waddle uphill along the well-marked paths. Every few steps reveal another incredible perspective, making the short walk to the summit just as rewarding as the destination itself.

Don’t expect to rush through your visit. Between soaking up the scenery, snapping countless photos, and simply standing in awe of the landscape, you’ll likely spend much longer at the top than you originally planned and that’s exactly what makes Schafberg so special.

There are two places where you can take a break once you reach the top. The first is the Hotel Schafbergspitze, a mountain hotel where you can even spend the night if you want to experience sunrise or sunset from the summit. It also has a restaurant serving traditional Austrian and regional dishes on a panoramic terrace. The second is Himmelspforte, a self-service mountain hut offering simple local meals, snacks, and drinks.

Since your SchafbergBahn ticket is valid for a specific return departure, you’ll usually have a couple of hours to spend at the summit. We decided to slow down, grab a cold beer on the terrace, and soak in the views before catching our train back down. Sometimes, the best part of a mountain adventure is just sitting still and appreciating where you are.

We spent ours exactly how we like it; grabbing a cold beer from the small stand below the hotel, finding a table with a view, and simply soaking in the incredible scenery before catching our train back down.

Pro Penguin Tip: If you collect travel stamps in a passport or notebook, don’t forget to ask the lady at the small stand for the official Schafberg summit stamp. It’s a fun little souvenir that is easy to miss if you don’t know it’s available. They also have two stamps at the downtown train station. 

We also did a short and easy circular waddle that starts from the summit station and loops around the top before bringing you back to where you started. Along the way, you’ll pass several viewpoints, each offering a slightly different perspective of the surrounding lakes and mountains. It’s an easy waddle that only takes a little extra time but is absolutely worth it.

If you’re after more adventure, Schafberg is also the starting point for several longer hiking trails. From here, experienced hikers can continue towards nearby peaks or hike all the way back down to St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, or Lake Mondsee, depending on the route they choose.

Things to Do on Schafberg

• Enjoy panoramic views of the Alps and the Salzkammergut lakes.
• Take photos of the 11 surrounding lakes from one of Austria’s most scenic viewpoints.
• Relax with a drink or meal at the summit restaurant or the small outdoor stand.

• Snap a photo with the summit cross, one of Schafberg’s most iconic landmarks.
• Slow down and soak in the atmosphere. Sometimes, the best thing to do is sit on a bench or in the grass and admire the views.

• Hotel Schafbergspitze: Stay overnight if you want to experience sunrise or sunset at the summit.
• Snack & Beer Stand: A small outdoor stand below the hotel serves drinks and light refreshments with outdoor seating.
• Toilets: Public toilets are available at the hotel but require a €0.50 fee per person, per visit.
• Seating Areas: You’ll find plenty of benches and grassy spots where you can sit, relax, and soak in the incredible scenery.
• Souvenirs: Don’t forget to ask for the official Schafberg summit stamp if you collect travel stamps.

How Much Time Do You Need at the Summit

If you’re taking the SchafbergBahn as we did, we’d recommend allowing around three hours for the whole experience. The train ride takes about 35 minutes each way, leaving you with roughly 1.5 to 2 hours at the summit, depending on the departure you choose.

We originally booked a return train that gave us around two hours at the top. It was enough to do the short circular waddle, take plenty of photos, enjoy a cold beer with a view, and even hide a few penguin stones. That said, we still found ourselves wishing we had booked one train later. Having an extra hour would have given us more time to simply sit in the grass, soak up the incredible scenery, and enjoy the mountain without watching the clock.

If your schedule allows, we’d recommend booking around three hours at the summit. Trust us; you probably won’t want to leave.

Is Schafberg Difficult to Visit

That really depends on how you choose to reach the summit. If you take the SchafbergBahn, then no, Schafberg is a very accessible mountain. From the summit station, you’ll only need to waddle along short, well-maintained paths to reach the viewpoints. There are a few uneven sections and some steeper parts, so we still recommend wearing comfortable shoes with good grip.

If you decide to hike to the top, it’s a completely different experience. Depending on your route, you’ll tackle around 1,200 meters of elevation gain, making it a moderately challenging to challenging hike that requires a good level of fitness. The reward, however, is one of the most spectacular panoramas in Austria. Whichever option you choose, Schafberg is absolutely worth the effort.

Best Time to Visit Schafberg

The best time to visit Schafberg is between late spring and early autumn (May to October), when the SchafbergBahn operates regularly and the hiking trails are free of snow. No matter which season you choose, try to visit on a clear, sunny day, as the panoramic views are the main reason to come here.

As for the time of day, we’d recommend taking one of the first trains in the morning. Not only will you avoid the biggest crowds, but you’ll also have a better chance of enjoying crisp visibility before afternoon clouds roll in. Before setting off, it’s always worth checking the weather forecast and visibility; you don’t want to make the journey only to find yourself surrounded by fog instead of the famous 360-degree views.

• Water to stay hydrated.
• Sunglasses and sunscreen for sunny days.

Is Schafberg Worth Visiting: Our Take

Yes, yes, and yes again; feathers down, it’s worth it!. We were a little hesitant at first, mainly because of the price of the SchafbergBahn tickets. As people who usually prefer hiking, we wouldn’t normally pay for a train ride. Unfortunately, our injuries meant hiking wasn’t an option this time, so we decided to give it a chance, and we’re glad we did.

The train ride itself is a unique experience, but the real highlight is what awaits at the top. We’ve explored a lot of Austria over the years, and we can honestly say that Schafberg offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints we’ve ever visited. The combination of the historic railway, the panoramic views over the lakes and mountains, and the relaxed atmosphere at the summit made it one of the highlights of our entire road trip.
