Which Transport Did We Choose
We were mainly deciding between the Flytoget Airport Express and the Vy train, and in the end, we went with Vy. The biggest reason was simple: Vy train travel is included with the Oslo Pass, so it made the most sense for us. The journey was still quick and straightforward, and the train takes you directly to Oslo Central Station, right in the heart of the city. Since we already had the Oslo Pass, choosing Vy let us save a little money without adding extra hassle when we arrived. For us, it was an easy decision.
Taking the Vy Train from Oslo Airport
Where to Go at Oslo Airport
Getting to the train station at Oslo Airport is pretty straightforward. As soon as you get off the plane and make your way through the airport, follow the signs for “Train.” You will soon see the station entrance, along with the ticket machines and counters where you can buy your ticket. One thing we found handy is that you can already see the train station area while waiting for your checked luggage, so you know exactly where to go once your bags arrive. You don’t need to leave the terminal or figure out complicated connections. Just follow the signs, and you’ll get there.

Where to Buy Your Ticket
You have several easy ways to get your Vy ticket, so you don’t need to worry about buying one before you arrive.
- Ticket machines: Available at the airport train station.
- Ticket counter: Buy your ticket directly from a staff member.
- Vy app or website: Buy your ticket online before traveling.
- Oslo Pass: If your pass covers your journey, you can use it instead, as we did.

Buying a Flytoget Ticket
If you choose the Flytoget Airport Express, buying your ticket is just as straightforward. At the train station, you will see Flytoget ticket machines where you can buy your ticket before heading to the platform. You can also visit the ticket counter if you have questions or want help with your purchase. You can also buy your ticket in advance through the Flytoget app or website.

Finding the Right Train
Once you have your ticket, check the departure board and make sure you are heading to the correct platform. Both Flytoget and Vy use the airport train station, so check the train name and destination before heading downstairs. The signs are clear, and everything is well organized, so it’s hard to get lost. The Flytoget platforms have an extra ticket scanner at the entrance, where you scan your ticket before going down. With Vy, there is no additional scanner at the entrance, so you head down to the platform, find the right track, and wait for your train.

You can also easily tell the two trains apart by their appearance, which is handy when you are standing on the platform. Flytoget trains are mostly silver with a distinctive hint of orange, while Vy trains are green. If you are still unsure which train is yours, look at the train itself. The colors make it much easier to spot the right one.

Do You Need to Validate Your Ticket
If you are used to validating tickets before boarding, you won’t need to validate your Vy ticket at the station. Once you have purchased your ticket, keep it ready on your phone or as a paper ticket and board the train. A conductor may come through during the journey to check tickets, so show it when asked. The same applies if you are traveling with your Oslo Pass. Keep your pass ready and show it to the conductor when they check.
Our Experience on the Vy Train
The Vy trains are comfortable for such a short airport journey. There is plenty of seating, lots of standing room, and enough space for your luggage, so you won’t feel cramped even when the train is busy. There is also a small area with a vending machine, where you can grab a snack or drink during the journey. The best part is that the journey is quick, taking only about two or three minutes longer than Flytoget.
Keep in mind that these trains don’t start their journey at Oslo Airport. They come from another destination, so don’t be surprised if the train arrives with people already on board. It can sometimes be quite crowded, especially at busy times, so you may need to stand or wait for the next one. We almost had to go with Flytoget because there was a train strike when we arrived, and Vy services were affected, but luckily we managed to catch a Vy train. Given the price difference, Vy is definitely worth considering if you want to keep your airport transfer a little cheaper without sacrificing much comfort or travel time.

We got off at Oslo Central Station (Oslo S), and from there, you’re in the heart of Oslo. Step out of the station, and shops, restaurants, streets, and plenty of the city’s main sights surround you. From here, you can continue on foot, take the metro or tram, or start exploring Oslo right away.
Why We Chose the Vy Train
There were really two reasons why we chose the Vy train. First, it was included in our Oslo Pass, which made it an easy choice. But even if it hadn’t been included, we probably still would have chosen Vy. It is considerably cheaper than Flytoget, while the journey takes only around two or three minutes longer. For us, paying more to save a couple of minutes didn’t make much sense, especially when the Vy train was comfortable, convenient, and took us straight to Oslo Central Station.
Flytoget vs. Vy: Which Train Should You Take
Both trains are fast and convenient, so the main difference comes down to price, frequency, and how much you value those extra few minutes. Here’s a quick comparison.
| Vy Train | Flytoget Airport Express | |
| Duration | 23 minutes | 19 minutes |
| Price | Around NOK 134 | NOK 268 |
| Where to get off | Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) | Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) |
| Frequency | 60+ departures on weekdays | Every 10 minutes |
| Ticket | Vy app, website, machines or counter | Flytoget app, website, machines or contactless |
| Oslo Pass | Included | Not included |
| Best for | Saving money | Speed and convenience |
| Journey difference | Only about 4 minutes longer | Fastest option |
| Extra perk | Regular regional train | Dedicated airport express |
Our take: If you are watching your budget, Vy makes a lot of sense. You are saving around NOK 134 while adding only about four minutes to the journey. If you want the fastest possible ride and don’t mind paying more, Flytoget is the more frequent option.
