Staying at Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark: Our Honest Review
Finding a hotel in Amsterdam that fits the budget and still has a good location isn’t always easy. For our trip, we stayed at Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark, just a short waddle from one of Amsterdam’s most famous parks. Here’s how our stay went and whether we would book it again.

With so many options in Amsterdam and prices that can climb, we wanted somewhere with a good location without paying a fortune. Eventually, we found Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark, tucked between residential buildings in a quiet Amsterdam neighborhood and just a short waddle from Vondelpark. The location seemed like a good balance: outside the busiest parts of the city but still well connected to everything we wanted to see, so we booked it. In this review, we’ll share what our stay at Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark was really like, including the room, facilities, location, what we enjoyed, what we didn’t like, and a few things worth knowing before you book your own stay in Amsterdam.
A Little History of Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark
The building housing Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark dates back to 1915 and was designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Jan Rutgers. Long before tourists checked in, it was known as Hospitium San Luchesio, serving as a Franciscan chapter house and a hotel for priests. In the 2000s, it became Hotel Central Park, then underwent another makeover in 2023, when Eon Plaza Hotels transformed it into the Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark we know today. The hotel is privately operated by Eon Plaza Hotels, the Amsterdam hospitality group that also manages the historic Hotel Die Port van Cleve. The new concept puts Dutch design at the center, with work and details from Dutch designers incorporated throughout the property.
Location and Accessibility
📍 Address: Waldeck Pyrmontlaan 9, Oud Zuid, 1075 BT Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark is between residential buildings in Amsterdam-West, close to the western edge of Vondelpark. We liked that the area felt much more residential than the busy streets around Amsterdam Centraal, yet we could still get into the center easily by public transport. Vondelpark was only a short waddle away, and there were tram stops, cafés, restaurants, and shops within walking distance. It worked well as a base for exploring Amsterdam while giving us somewhere quieter to return to at the end of the day.
We arrived in Amsterdam by train at Amsterdam Centraal and from there took Tram 2 toward Nieuw Sloten, getting off at Amstelveenseweg (Zeilstraat). The tram ride took us through central Amsterdam and past areas such as Dam Square and Museumplein before reaching our stop. From there, we had about a six-minute waddle with our luggage through the residential streets before reaching Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark. It wasn’t quite a door-to-door connection, but it was easy enough, and having a direct tram back to Amsterdam Centraal made the location convenient throughout our stay.
Hotel Surroundings
- Shopping Opportunities. The hotel sits in a residential part of Amsterdam Oud-Zuid, so you won’t step outside into one of Amsterdam’s main shopping districts. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and local shops are still within waddling distance for everyday essentials. For more serious shopping, you can hop on the tram toward the center, while the boutiques and shops around Museumplein and Oud-Zuid are also relatively easy to reach.
- Nearby Attractions. The big one here is, of course, Vondelpark, which is only a short waddle from the hotel. We loved having Amsterdam’s most famous park practically on our doorstep, especially when we wanted to walk rather than immediately jump on a tram. The Museum Quarter is also nearby, putting the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum within easy reach. For attractions farther into the historic center, Tram 2 makes getting around straightforward.
- Dining Options. Despite being tucked into a residential neighborhood, we had several places to eat within waddling distance. One of the closest options is TOZI Restaurant & Bar, Vondelpark on Koninginneweg, serving Italian-inspired dishes and drinks. Inside Vondelpark, you can also waddle over to De Vondeltuin for something more casual in the park. More cafés, bakeries, and restaurants are scattered around the surrounding streets, so we never felt cut off from food despite staying away from the busy center. One thing to know: Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark doesn’t currently serve breakfast, but it partners with selected nearby venues where guests can get a discount.
Check-In Experience
Our first introduction was a little different from waddling into a typical hotel. The front door was locked, so we first had to ring the bell to get in. Once in, check-in was quick and straightforward. The staff explained everything we needed to know about the hotel and our stay, handed us our key, and we were ready to head to the room within a few minutes. We really loved the small reception area. Rather than a large hotel lobby, it felt cozy and almost like stepping into someone’s living room. There were comfortable places to sit, and the fake fireplace was a fun touch that somehow made the whole space feel even more welcoming. It was small, simple, and probably one of our favorite parts of the hotel’s design.
The hotel has a small reception rather than a large 24-hour-style front desk, so check the arrangements if you expect to arrive late. The reception team can also help with local recommendations, transport, and bike rentals during your stay.

Room and Amenities
Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark is a small, boutique-style hotel that fits its quiet residential setting and the cozy feeling we noticed as soon as we walked in. Instead of dozens of room types, there are four main categories: Single, Double, Queen, and King, with rooms starting at just 8 m². So, one thing to know before booking: the rooms here are definitely on the compact side, even by Amsterdam standards.
Getting to our room was an adventure in itself. We took the stairs up, and they were narrow, steep, and quite tight, so be prepared, especially if you are carrying a larger suitcase. The hotel also has an elevator, so no worries. Once we opened the door, there wasn’t much of an entrance at all. The bed was basically right there, which immediately showed us just how compact the room was. The design followed a simple white-and-blue color scheme, with a mirror and TV along one side of the room. Opposite the bed was a window overlooking the water and the residential buildings behind the hotel, which was actually a lovely little view to wake up to. The room was definitely small, with very little space to move around once our luggage was inside, but it made good use of the space.

The Bathroom
The private bathroom was compact too, but it had everything we needed for a short stay in Amsterdam. It had a walk-in shower, toilet, and small sink with a mirror, with towels provided for our stay. Basic toiletries were available, and the room also came with a hairdryer, so we didn’t need to bring one. Like the bedroom, there wasn’t much extra space, but the layout was practical and made good use of the limited room.
Facilities and Services
Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark keeps its facilities fairly simple, so don’t expect a gym, spa, restaurant or large hotel lobby. There is, however, a bright shared breakfast/common area that stays open throughout the day, where guests can sit with a coffee, relax or get some work done. We also had free Wi-Fi, and the rooms come with Smart TVs with streaming services. One useful extra is bike rental directly through the hotel, which feels particularly fitting in Amsterdam. Bikes currently cost €19 for 24 hours, and you can ask reception about availability. The hotel doesn’t serve breakfast itself, but it partners with nearby cafés where guests can get a discounted breakfast. Overall, the facilities are limited, but for us this was more of a base for exploring Amsterdam than a hotel where we planned to spend the whole day.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and in the rooms.
- The elevator provides access to the upper floors, although we also used the narrow staircase during our stay.
- The common lounge area gives guests somewhere to sit outside their rooms, which is particularly useful given how compact some of the rooms are.
- Bike rental is available directly through the hotel for €19 per bike for 24 hours, making it easy to explore Amsterdam the Dutch way.
- Rooms include Smart TVs with streaming options.
- Coffee and tea facilities are available, including complimentary coffee and tea.
- Luggage storage is available, which is useful if you arrive before your room is ready or want to explore Amsterdam after check-out.
- Housekeeping is provided during your stay.
- No restaurant or bar is located inside the hotel, but there are several places to eat within waddling distance.
- The hotel does not serve breakfast. Instead, the hotel works with nearby breakfast spots where guests can receive a discount.
- No gym or fitness center is available.
- No swimming pool or spa, so this is definitely not a hotel you choose for leisure facilities.
- No private on-site parking is available. The hotel recommends nearby public parking options if you arrive by car.
- Pets are not allowed, except assistance dogs.

Value For Money
For our stay at Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark from 1 May to 5 May, we paid €802.27 for two people for four nights, which worked out to just over €200 per night. It certainly wasn’t a cheap stay, especially considering the small room and limited hotel facilities. Still, Amsterdam accommodation can be expensive, and we were also visiting during the busy spring season. For us, much of the value came from the quiet residential location, proximity to Vondelpark, and easy tram connection to central Amsterdam. The room gave us everything we needed, but at this price point, we wouldn’t call it a bargain. We were mainly paying for a convenient Amsterdam base rather than a hotel experience. Overall, we found the value for money reasonable for Amsterdam, but not exceptional.
Verdict
★★★☆☆
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark and found it a good base for our few days in Amsterdam. We liked the quiet residential location, proximity to Vondelpark, easy tram connection to the center, and the hotel’s cozy design the most. We also liked that it felt small and personal rather than like a large chain hotel, and the little reception area with its fireplace was a nice touch.
Of course, there were a few downsides. Our room was very small, with the bed practically greeting us as soon as we opened the door, and there wasn’t much space once we brought in our luggage. The hotel also has limited facilities, so at more than €200 per night, it wasn’t exactly a bargain. Still, Amsterdam hotels can be expensive, particularly during the busy spring season, and we spent most of our days out exploring anyway.
If you’re looking for a small hotel near Vondelpark in a quieter part of Amsterdam, Dutch Design Hotel Vondelpark is worth considering. Don’t book it expecting lots of space or resort-style facilities. Book it for the location, easy access to the city, and a comfortable place to return to after a full day of waddling around Amsterdam. Would we stay again? Yes, though we would definitely compare prices and probably book one of the larger rooms next time.
