Where to Eat at Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee): Restaurants We Recommend
If you’re looking for places to eat around Wolfgangsee, you’ve come to the right place. We only spent a couple of days exploring the area, so we didn’t visit every restaurant around the lake. Even so, we managed to enjoy a handful of meals in different spots, and these are the places we’d happily recommend based on our own experience. From traditional Austrian dishes to lakeside dining, every restaurant in this guide is one we personally visited, paid for ourselves, and would recommend to fellow travelers planning a trip to Wolfgangsee.
Typical Food to Try Around Wolfgangsee
One of the things we enjoyed most about Wolfgangsee was how easy it was to find authentic Austrian food. Thanks to the lake, freshwater fish such as trout, char, and whitefish are popular menu items, while classics like Wiener Schnitzel, dumplings, and hearty meat dishes can be found almost everywhere. If you have a sweet tooth as we do, don’t leave without trying Kaiserschmarrn, apple strudel, or one of the many homemade cakes served in local cafés. You’ll also come across regional alpine cheeses and plenty of locally brewed Austrian beers to pair with your meal. Whether you choose a traditional family-run inn or a modern restaurant overlooking the lake, you’ll find that most places focus on simple, regional ingredients and generous portions.

Atmosphere
Dorf-Alm zu St. Wolfgang was the very first restaurant we visited during our trip around Wolfgangsee. By the time we arrived in St. Wolfgang, it was already well past lunchtime, but thankfully, the restaurant was still serving food, so we managed to grab a late lunch. Even before waddling inside, the place caught our attention. With its traditional wooden exterior, flower-filled balconies, and cozy Alpine décor, it looked exactly how you’d imagine a classic Austrian restaurant.
What We Ordered
- Wiener Schnitzel with potatoes
- Cordon Bleu with French fries

- Beer

What We Loved
Our food arrived quickly, even though it was already well into the afternoon. Both the Wiener Schnitzel and the Cordon Bleu were served fresh, hot, and packed with flavor. The schnitzel was perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining juicy inside, and the Cordon Bleu was generously filled and paired wonderfully with the crispy French fries. The service was friendly and efficient throughout our visit, and the traditional Austrian setting made the whole experience feel even more authentic. It was exactly the kind of restaurant we hoped to find when arriving in Wolfgangsee.

Jausenstation Aschinger
Quick Facts
- 📍 Location: Ried 15, 5360 Ried, Austria
- 🍽️ Cuisine: Traditional Austrian mountain hut
- 💰 Price Range: €€
Atmosphere
Reaching Jausenstation Aschinger is part of the experience. After a steady uphill waddle, you’re rewarded with a cozy, family-run mountain hut that feels like stepping into someone’s home. The wooden interior, peaceful surroundings, and welcoming atmosphere make it the perfect place to take a break and enjoy a simple Austrian meal.
What We Ordered
- Hausplatte (traditional cold cuts and cheese platter)
- Bauernkrapfen with jam
- Two beers

What We Loved
Before our main dish even arrived, we were served the Bauernkrapfen with jam, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. It was freshly made, wonderfully soft, and paired perfectly with the sweet jam. For the main course, we shared the Hausplatte, a generous platter filled with local cheeses, cured meats, fresh vegetables, and homemade bread. The bread, in particular, was absolutely delicious and tied everything together. Accompanied by a couple of cold beers, it was exactly the kind of simple, regional meal we were hoping to enjoy in the Austrian Alps.
What Could Be Better
The only downside wasn’t the restaurant itself—it was getting there. 😅 The uphill waddle can be quite challenging, especially on a hot summer day, so definitely bring some water and take your time. The good news is that the food waiting at the top makes the effort worthwhile.
Prices
- Hausplatte – €16.90
- Bauernkrapfen with jam – €4.90
Overall, the prices felt a little higher considering the menu focuses on simple cold platters and snacks. That said, you’re paying for the location, homemade products, and the unique mountain hut experience as much as the food itself.
Would We Return
Absolutely. The warm, homely atmosphere made us feel less like customers and more like guests visiting someone’s house. Combined with the homemade food, local products, and beautiful surroundings, it’s a place we’d happily stop at again after another waddle through the hills.
