Step into the Legacy of ABBA

The ABBA Museum stands out among the city’s many attractions, drawing in music lovers from around the world to celebrate the iconic Swedish pop group that captured hearts with their catchy songs and unmistakable style. But even if you are not a die-hard fan, the visit is surprisingly enjoyable. As huge ABBA fans ourselves, skipping this place was never an option; of course, we had to step inside. From the moment we entered, we were immersed in their world, reliving the band’s incredible musical journey through interactive exhibits and unforgettable moments. Even if you only know ABBA through your parents or grandparents, this museum proves it is still absolutely worth a visit. Read on to find out why.

The ABBA Museum is a modern, interactive space dedicated to celebrating the timeless music and extraordinary success of the legendary pop group ABBA. As you step inside and explore its engaging exhibits, you are instantly met with a mix of nostalgia and excitement that brings their iconic story to life.

The ABBA Museum is on the island of Djurgården, known for its numerous museums, parks, and attractions. It is easily accessible by public transportation, which we also used. Several transportation options are available. Here are a few ways to reach the museum.

  • Subway. Take the subway to the ” Kungsträdgården ” station (T13, T14, or T17 lines). You can either waddle for about 15-20 minutes or take the tram.
  • Tram. From the “Kungsträdgården” station, take tram number 7 or 9 towards “Djurgården.” Get off at the “Liljevalchs/Gröna Lund” stop and walk a short distance to the museum.
  • Ferry. Djurgården Ferry: Take the Djurgården ferry from Slussen or Nybroplan to the “Djurgården” stop. The museum is a pleasant walk from there.
  • Bus. Take bus number 69 from the city center and get off at the “Gröna Lund” stop. The museum is just a short walk away.
  • Taxi or Ride-Sharing Services. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are widely available in Stockholm. You can input the museum’s address into the app and be dropped off directly at the entrance.

It’s important to note that public transportation is the most common and convenient way to reach the museum, and we also leveraged it as Stockholm has a well-developed public transportation system.

Opening Hours

The museum is generally open every day, with standard hours from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., though in late spring and summer the closing time extends to around 8:00 p.m., and during peak winter months it may close earlier, so it’s best to check their official website for exact seasonal times before your visit

Tickets

Before we get to the ticket prices, it’s important to know that you should purchase your tickets in advance. When we were waddling from the Vasa Museum to the ABBA Museum, there wasn’t a long line, but generally, it’s better to have your entry secured. We just got lucky. Tickets are for a specific entry time, so some planning is required. Even if you’re at the museum, all tickets must be purchased online; there’s no on-site cash option.

Pro Penguin Tip

One tip we can’t stress enough is to plan your visit for a specific time and buy your tickets online in advance. The museum only allows entry during your booked time slot, so showing up without a ticket can be stressful and may mean waiting or missing your preferred entry time. Booking online not only guarantees your spot but also lets you make the most of your visit without rushing, so you can enjoy all the interactive exhibits, music, and memorabilia at your own pace.

Inside the ABBA Museum: A Fan’s Perspective

When we arrived, we had no tickets as we wanted to wing it.  We were lucky, and there was only a short line, but the staff told us we had to buy tickets online, and you can’t purchase them on-site. Once we had our tickets, we could wait outside on one of the benches or enter the museum shop, where we could wait as well while buying some ABBA memorabilia.

It’s important to know that the time slots are really working and you must wait for your specific time to scan the ticket; it won’t let you in even five minutes early (we tried 😅). Thankfully, the shop is full of ABBA-themed souvenirs, and there’s also an interactive wall to dance along and other fun activities to keep you entertained while you wait. Even waiting there was plenty of stuff to kill time with. And we love the concept of time-slots, as later in the museum allows us to fully enjoy it without it being crowded.

As our entry time finally arrived, we were beyond excited to step into the vibrant world of ABBA. The moment we waddled in, the lights, colors, and iconic ABBA music set the mood, making it feel like we were part of their universe. Our journey began in a small projection room where a short film introduced the band’s story, immersing us in their beginnings and rise to fame. From there, we entered the main museum, exploring exhibits dedicated to each member, from their childhoods and early influences to the way they came together as a group, discovering the stories, photos, and memorabilia that shaped their legendary careers.

ABBA’s music resonates with audiences worldwide, transcending generations and cultural boundaries. Their hit songs like “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Waterloo” have become timeless classics, and their influence on pop culture is undeniable.  And although we didn’t grow up during their pop reign, our parents did, meaning we listened to them as well.

One quirky highlight is the “Ring Ring” telephone exhibit, a special phone that only the four ABBA members know the number to, and on rare occasions, it actually rings, so a visitor might pick up a call from one of the band members themselves, which makes it a fun and unexpected moment for lucky guests.

What we loved most was how interactive the ABBA Museum is; it has something for every fan. You can listen to their music, dance with the band via holograms, step into their recording studio, try on iconic costumes, and even become the fifth member on the big stage. The museum also features audio guides in multiple languages narrated by the band members themselves, giving personal insights and stories. From immersive exhibits to fun, hands-on experiences, it’s a perfect mix of nostalgia, music, and entertainment that makes every fan’s dream come alive. The displays boast memorabilia collections, including original costumes, instruments, personal artifacts, etc. As you waddle through the museum, you’ll gain insight into ABBA’s creative process, iconic stage performances, and influence on popular culture.

We loved how we could sing along on stage, perform in a virtual holographic concert, or even join them in the recording studio, creating an immersive connection to the band’s music. These hands-on experiences take an unforgettable journey into the heart of ABBA’s world. Beyond the interactive exhibits, the museum also explores the individual lives of each band member, offering deeper insights into their personal stories, accomplishments outside of ABBA, enduring friendships, and what paths they followed after the group disbanded.

The ABBA Museum isn’t just for die-hard fans. It’s a music experience that anyone can enjoy. We loved exploring every corner, from the interactive exhibits to the incredible memorabilia, and yes, we even got to see the real-life helicopter they used on tour! The museum’s dedication to ABBA’s legacy lets you really connect with their music, whether you’re reliving your favorite hits or hearing their timeless songs for the first time. Every moment feels like stepping into their world, making it a truly unforgettable journey into the magic of pop music.

Here’s a quick look at what we loved and what to keep in mind when visiting the ABBA Museum.

Pros

  • Highly interactive: sing, dance, and perform with ABBA holograms
  • Insightful exhibits on each member’s life and career
  • Authentic memorabilia, including costumes, instruments, and even their tour helicopter
  • Fun for all ages, not just die-hard fans
  • Audio guides narrated by the band members themselves
  • Great photo opportunities throughout the museum

Cons

  • Tickets must be purchased online in advance
  • Entry is only allowed at your specific time slot
  • It can be crowded during peak season
  • Limited time to see everything if you want to explore thoroughly

Visiting the ABBA Museum can easily take longer than you expect, especially if, like us, you get completely absorbed in all the interactive exhibits. We started off thinking we’d spend about an hour, but before we knew it, over an hour had flown by as we sang along on stage, danced with the holograms, explored the recording studio, and admired the costumes and memorabilia. Every corner has something fun or fascinating, so it’s easy to lose track of time. To fully enjoy the museum without rushing, we’d recommend planning for 1.5 to 2 hours, giving yourself plenty of time to experience all the music, history, and interactive fun at your own pace.

To make the most of your visit, it’s best to arrive early in the day or during weekday mornings when it’s usually less crowded. The museum can get busy in the afternoons and on weekends, especially during peak tourist season, so booking a morning time slot helps you enjoy the exhibits and interactive experiences more comfortably. If you want a slightly more relaxed vibe, late afternoons can also work, but keep in mind some areas may be busier with families or tour groups. Planning and choosing your time wisely makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. Even with time slots, it can get crowded as there is no limit on how long you can stay inside.
