Experience one of a kind cable car ride above the city of Funchal

 Madeira is far from short on the number of cable cars you can ride, and the Funchal Cable Car offers an unforgettable journey above Funchal, Madeira, with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. The bird’s-eye perspective will be something you won’t forget so soon. Read on to learn about some practical information and how our ride went. 

Are there two cable cars in Funchal?

Yes! There are currently two cable cars in Funchal – The Funchal Cable Car and the Botanical Garden Cable Car, which connect the city of Funchal to the parish of Monte. We took the first one, which you can find in the city’s heart and is easily accessible. 

How to Get to the Funchal Cable Car

For those staying in Funchal, the cable car station is within walking distance from most accommodations in the city center. Alternatively, taxis and public transportation are readily available. If you’re arriving from outside Funchal, consider renting a car to explore the island at your own pace.

Where to Park

Parking spaces are located near the cable car station, ensuring that visitors can embark on their adventure with ease. There is one parking house Parque de Estacionamento Almirante Reis, or the Almirante Reis Car Park, which is the same. Note that they have opening hours, which start at 6 a.m. 

Opening hours to the Funchal Cable Car

The Funchal Cable Car operates year-round. The first ride starts at 9 a.m., and the last boarding is at 5.45 p.m.

The minimum number of people to board is 4, so if you are a smaller group, you will be mixed with someone, although we were three people plus one penguin and had the cable car for ourselves. The maximum number of people is 6. 

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for the Funchal Cable Car are reasonable, offering excellent value for the unforgettable experience it provides. The prices below are for a roundtrip. 

• Adults: 12.50 €
• Children 7-14 years old: 9 €
• Children 6 and under: free entry
• Penguins: free entry

Do you need to book the cable car in Madeira?

There is no need to buy tickets in advance, but there is almost always a queue to get on the cable car and purchase the tickets on-site. So it’s up to your preference. 

How Long is the Funchal Cable Car Ride 

Expect to travel 15 to 25 minutes one way. The duration allows you the opportunity to absorb the beauty of the island from different vantage points and is epic. From Funchal to Monte, expect a 3200-meter incline distance.

• Lush Gardens and Parks. You’ll also pass over vibrant gardens and parks that adorn the hillsides. 
• Highway. You will be gliding over the highway, which not many cable car rides can claim they do so. 
• Spectacular Ocean View. As you rise higher, the Atlantic Ocean comes into view, painting a breathtaking backdrop to the island’s natural beauty. The contrast of the deep blue sea against the vibrant city is truly mesmerizing.

Our Ride of the Funchal Cable Car

We were among the first people to board the ride. We bought our tickets at sight and boarded one of the cars. Before the door closed, a lady took a picture of us, which we could later purchase at the top station (which we did as it came with a nice booklet and cost only 10€). 

The ride was spectacular. Although being a little afraid of cable cars, the ride up was calm (compared to the windy one back down). It was interesting to go above the busy streets before gliding over less crowded areas of Madeira.

At the top station, we departed and waddled on to explore Monte Hill.

Monte Hill in Funchal is a charming area offering you attractions to explore. Here are some of the highlights you won’t want to miss:

• Monte Palace Tropical Garden. This botanical garden is a true gem on Monte Hill and a must. It was our first stop, and we fell in love. It features a stunning array of plants from around the world, beautifully landscaped terraces, and tranquil ponds. The garden is also home to an impressive collection of contemporary art and ceramics. And our favorite part was the Japanese garden. 
• Monte Palace Museum. Located within the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, this museum showcases an extensive collection of African art, minerals, and a remarkable display of sculptures. 
• Nossa Senhora do Monte Church. This church is a place of pilgrimage for many. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Monte and is a significant religious site on the island. The church’s interior is decorated with intricate woodwork and religious art.
• Toboggan Ride (Carros de Cesto). A thrilling and iconic experience in Monte is the traditional toboggan ride. Skilled drivers guide wicker sleds down steep, narrow streets, providing an exhilarating descent from Monte to Livramento. It’s a unique and unforgettable adventure for which we didn’t have time and regret it. So go for sure! It was recommended to us by a local from Funchal. 
• Monte Municipal Park. This park offers a peaceful escape for nature lovers. It features lush green spaces, walking paths, and a playground, making it a great spot for a waddle.
• Casa do Caseiro Museum. This small museum provides insight into the history of Madeira’s traditional rural life. It showcases artifacts and tools used by the caretakers of the Quinta, offering a glimpse into the island’s agricultural heritage.
• Restaurants and Cafés. Monte Hill boasts a selection of charming eateries where you can savor local delicacies and enjoy a meal with a view. From traditional Madeiran cuisine to international fare, there’s something to suit every palate.

Exploring Monte Hill in Funchal offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and exhilarating experiences, and the cable car ride there is just the beginning of a great day ahead.
