We recommend visiting the local market in every city, and Funchal was no exception for us. You can find the Farmers’ Market in the heart of Funchal. Inaugurated on November 24, 1940, and designed by the visionary Edmundo Tavares, this market is not merely a place to purchase fresh produce. It’s an experience that showcases the Estado Novo architecture and captures the essence of Madeira’s vibrant culture and food scene. Waddle with us through Mercado dos Lavradores.

Opening Hours

Before you embark on this yummy adventure, note the Farmers’ Market welcomes visitors from Monday to Saturday. To be more precise, Monday to Thursday from 7am to 7pm, Fridays from 7am to 8pm, and Saturdays from 7am to 2pm. On Sundays, the market is closed.

Where is Mercado dos Lavradores located?

As mentioned, you can find it in the heart of the city. The address is Rua Brigadeiro Oudinout, 9060-158 Funchal. Historical Significance of Mercado dos Lavradores

The Farmers’ Market, conceived by Edmundo Tavares, was envisioned as Funchal’s central supply hub during the Estado Novo era. The architectural brilliance of the market is evident in its grand design, reflecting the era’s commitment to making it a focal point for the city’s culinary treasures. As you approach, the facade, the main door, and the fishmonger’s shop, adorned with large tile panels of Faiança Batisttini de Maria de Portugal, catch your eye. Crafted in 1940 and painted with regional themes by João Rodrigues, these tiles provide a visual narrative that transports you to the heart of Madeira’s cultural identity.

What to expect at Mercado dos Lavradores

As you waddle in, you end up in a small square with all sorts of stuff about you, and it’s a haven not only for your taste buds but also for the eye.

Fresh Produce. The market is a funnel of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices sourced directly from local farms. From exotic tropical fruits to traditional Madeiran specialties, you’ll find an array of flavors to tantalize your taste buds. We loved how all the fruits are nicely placed and how the local sellers give you an opportunity to taste them a bit before buying. There were fruits we had never seen or variations of papayas we didn’t know existed.

Local Artistry. Beyond the culinary delights, the Farmers’ Market is a hub for local craftsmanship. Artisans showcase their handmade products, from intricate lacework to vibrant ceramics, providing a perfect opportunity to take home a piece of Madeira’s artistic legacy. In the middle of the so-called square, we observed the intricate lacework, which was beautiful.

Seafood Extravaganza. The seafood market is located in an adjoined building, with stunning tile panels presenting an array of freshly caught seafood. The fish smell is intense, but you feel like stepping into the ocean itself. Everything is here, from massive tuna to smaller fish local to the island. The island’s maritime traditions are deep-rooted.

We bought different kinds of bananas, papayas, and something we don’t remember the name of but was delicious. We also got some seeds to get our produce, so let’s see how that will go.

A visit to Funchal’s Farmers’ Market is not just a shopping trip; it’s a cultural journey that brings you face-to-face with Madeira’s rich history, flavors, and traditions. Whether you’re a food enthusiast, a history buff, or a casual traveler, the Farmers’ Market in Funchal promises an experience that will linger in your memory long after you leave the enchanting shores of Madeira.

Enjoy the food and waddle on!
