One of Madeira’s most famous waterfalls, Cascata dos Anjos offers a unique experience you will not find elsewhere.Instead of viewing the waterfall from a distance, you can drive or waddle directly beneath the cascading water. The waterfall flows over the old coastal road connecting Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar, creating one of the island’s most photographed locations.

Located on Madeira’s sunny southwest coast, Cascata dos Anjos sits just outside the village of Ponta do Sol and is an easy stop during a road trip around the island. While the old road is now mainly used by visitors, it remains a popular attraction for those looking to experience Madeira’s dramatic landscapes up close.

Cascata dos Anjos is on Madeira’s southwest coast between Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar. The waterfall is accessible and does not require any hiking, making it one of the easiest waterfalls to visit on the island.

From Funchal, follow the signs to Ribeira Brava and watch for markers for Cascata dos Anjos. Several local bus routes connect nearby towns with Ponta do Sol, although schedules can be limited, especially on weekends.

For those who prefer a guided experience, several tour operators offer excursions tailored to showcase Madeira’s natural wonders.

We visited as part of our Madeira road trip and arrived with our rental car. This is by far the easiest and most flexible way to visit the waterfall, especially if you plan to combine it with other attractions along the coast.

Where to Park

Finding the perfect parking spot for your visit to Cascata dos Anjos can be a challenge. As you approach the waterfall along Estrada da Serra, you will already notice designated parking areas, which will be full, and the roads along the way. So you either come early or be ready to park further down and waddle to the waterfall. It’s just a short waddle from the parking area to the trailhead. Remember to exercise caution and follow any posted guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Or, if you want to risk it, go straight to the waterfall in the car, go under it, and turn your car around on the other side. The waterfall is on one of Madeira’s old roads. You might even find a spot near the waterfall. Beware: many people do it, and some need to learn how to park. At the beginning of the old tunnel, you will see people parking along the tunnel. Do not get discouraged, and move on to the waterfall. We risked it, and it was worth it. The worst thing is that you have to turn around on the other side and go back, which will still give you the experience of going under the waterfall twice.

Cascata dos Anjos is a natural marvel integrated into the island’s terrain. The waterfall cascades from a rocky precipice, surrounded by vibrant vegetation, creating a harmonious blend of water and wilderness. Its uniqueness also comes from the fact it falls directly onto the road. It’s a sensory experience that immerses you in the heart of nature.

According to local folklore, the waterfall earned its name from believing that angels once descended from the heavens to bathe in its pristine waters. The mystical aura surrounding Cascata dos Anjos adds an air of enchantment to the visit. Refresh and recharge as the negative ions released by the waterfall invigorate the air, providing a natural boost to your energy levels. Many people report feeling refreshed and revitalized after spending time here.

The best season to visit Cascata dos Anjos is between November and May, when Madeira receives more rainfall, and the waterfall is at its most powerful. Winter and spring are particularly good times to visit, as the surrounding landscape is lush and green, and the cascade creates the dramatic curtain of water that has made this spot famous. During the summer months, the waterfall still flows, but it can be noticeably weaker depending on recent rainfall.

As for the time of day, we recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. These times are usually quieter, making it easier to find parking and take photos without crowds. Early morning also offers softer light for photography, while late afternoon can provide beautiful views of the coastline as the sun begins to lower over the Atlantic Ocean.

Most only need around 15 to 30 minutes at Cascata dos Anjos. The waterfall is right next to the road and does not require any hiking, making it an easy stop during a Madeira road trip. This gives you enough time to admire the waterfall, walk beneath the cascading water if you wish, take photos, and enjoy the coastal scenery.

If you enjoy photography or plan to combine your visit with nearby attractions such as Ponta do Sol or Madalena do Mar, you may want to allow up to an hour. We spent around 30 minutes here, which felt like the perfect amount of time to experience the waterfall without feeling rushed before continuing our adventure around the island.

Overall, we really enjoyed visiting Cascata dos Anjos. Seeing a waterfall cascade directly onto a road is not something you come across every day, and it is easy to understand why this has become one of Madeira’s most famous waterfalls. The combination of the dramatic cliffs, ocean views, and water crashing onto the old coastal road creates a unique setting that is well worth experiencing at least once.

That said, it was not our favorite waterfall on the island. One of the biggest drawbacks was the lack of dedicated parking, as most people park wherever they can along the roadside. The closer we got to the waterfall, the more crowded it became, with many people walking along the road and paying little attention to passing cars. While the waterfall itself is impressive, the crowds and traffic detracted from the charm and made the experience feel a little less relaxing than at some of Madeira’s other waterfall spots.

Despite the crowds, Cascata dos Anjos remains one of the most unique waterfalls we visited in Madeira. Watching water tumble onto the road while waves crash nearby creates a scene that is hard to forget. If you can, arrive early in the morning to enjoy a quieter experience and avoid the busiest part of the day. For us, it was a fantastic stop and one of those places that perfectly showcases Madeira’s dramatic landscapes and unexpected natural attractions.

Enjoy your shower underneath the waterfall and waddle on!
