The Ultimate Guide to the Vorderer Gosausee Lake Walk
When we planned our Salzkammergut road trip, we weren’t even sure whether Vorderer Gosausee was worth adding to our itinerary. There are so many beautiful lakes in the region that we almost drove straight past them. I’m so glad we didn’t. The first challenge came as soon as we arrived: we couldn’t find a parking space near the lake. After a few minutes of searching, we finally found a spot a little farther away and waddled the rest of the way. It was the middle of the day, the sun was blazing, and the crystal-clear water looked so refreshing that all we wanted to do was jump in. Instead, we set off on the trail around the lake, and within minutes we knew we’d made the right decision. Every turn revealed another postcard-worthy view of the Dachstein Glacier reflected in the turquoise water, making this one of those easy waddle that feels anything but ordinary.

How to Get to Vorderer Gosausee
Vorderer Gosausee is in the village of Gosau in Austria’s beautiful Salzkammergut region, about 20 minutes from Hallstatt and one hour from Salzburg by car.
We visited Vorderer Gosausee right after spending the morning exploring the incredible Liechtensteinklamm (Liechtenstein Gorge) near St. Johann im Pongau. It made for a perfect combination; first the dramatic canyon, then a relaxing waddle around one of Austria’s most beautiful lakes. The drive took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes, following the scenic B166 Pass Gschütt Road through the mountains and the village of Gosau before reaching the lake. The route itself is part of the experience, with winding alpine roads, traditional villages, and mountain views almost the entire way.
If you’re traveling without a car, it’s still possible to reach Vorderer Gosausee by public transport. Take a train to Steeg-Gosau Bahnhof, then hop on bus 542, which continues to the Gosausee stop just a short walk from the lake. It takes longer than driving, but it is a convenient option if you’re exploring Austria by train and bus.
Where to Park at Vorderer Gosausee
There are several paid parking areas near Vorderer Gosausee, with the Gosausee Parkplatz being the closest to the lake. If you’re visiting during the summer or on a sunny weekend, don’t be surprised if it’s already full; we arrived around midday and couldn’t find a single free space. Instead, we parked at one of the other Gosausee Parkplatz car parks a little farther down the road. It added a few extra minutes to our waddle to the lake, but it was still an easy and pleasant waddle.
All of the official parking lots require payment, so don’t expect to park for free. One tip from our visit: be prepared to use the parking machine. We originally tried to pay using the online payment option, but it wasn’t working, so we had to use the ticket machine instead. It only took a minute, but it’s something worth knowing in advance to avoid any last-minute stress.

Our Waddle Around Vorderer Gosausee
Because the closest car park was full, we had to leave our car a little farther away, which meant we had already waddled almost a kilometer before even reaching the lake. At first, we weren’t too excited about the extra distance, especially with the midday sun beating down on us, but the moment Vorderer Gosausee came into view, we completely forgot about it. The crystal-clear water, the towering Dachstein Glacier, and the peaceful surroundings made the extra walk feel worth every step. That said, we definitely wouldn’t have complained if we’d managed to park a little closer! It was one of the hottest parts of the day, so after stopping for a few photos at the shoreline, our first mission became finding something to cool us down. Luckily, the souvenir shop near the lake also sells ice cream, so we grabbed one before starting the loop around the lake. It was exactly what we needed before continuing our waddle and taking in one incredible view after another.

After getting our scoop of ice cream, our next mission was to find the first bench with at least a little bit of shade. The sun was relentless; it was one of the hottest days in Austria, and our ice cream was melting almost as quickly as we could eat it. Once we’d cooled down a little, we continued our waddle around the lake, and that’s when Vorderer Gosausee really started to impress us. Around every corner, another postcard-worthy view appeared. The turquoise water sparkled in the sunshine, the Dachstein Glacier stood proudly in the background, and the reflections on the lake were simply breathtaking. We had expected a pleasant waddle, but we didn’t expect the scenery to be this spectacular.

We started the loop by following the trail on the left-hand side of the lake. The first part was almost entirely in the sun, and by then we were definitely feeling the heat. Thankfully, after about halfway around the lake, the path led into the forest, where the trees finally gave us some much-needed shade. It was such a relief to escape the blazing sun for a while.
As we continued through the woods, we spotted a small path leading down to the water. Of course, we couldn’t resist exploring it. It turned out to be one of our favorite moments of the entire waddle. We found a quiet little spot where we could sit on the rocks and dip our feet into the crystal-clear glacial water. It was unbelievably refreshing after walking in the heat. We considered going for a swim, but the water was too cold for us! Even in the middle of summer, the lake stays surprisingly chilly because it’s fed by meltwater from the Dachstein Glacier. On warm days, the water usually reaches only 17–20°C (63–68°F), making it perfect for cooling off but a definite shock if you’re planning a full swim.

After our refreshing break by the water, which is roughly halfway around the loop, we continued following the trail around the lake. The second half felt even more relaxing. The path winds between the forest and the shoreline, constantly revealing new angles of the Dachstein Glacier and the surrounding peaks. One thing we really liked was that the scenery never became repetitive. Every bend offered a different perspective, whether it was another perfect reflection on the water, a quiet bay, or a small wooden jetty stretching into the lake.
Before visiting, we thought a 4-kilometer loop around a lake might feel long, but it was quite the opposite. The trail is mostly flat, well-maintained, and easy to follow, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone who wants to slow down and enjoy nature. By the time we returned to the starting point, we were genuinely happy that we had decided to complete the entire circuit instead of turning back halfway. Some places are too beautiful to rush, and Vorderer Gosausee is definitely one of them.

Completing the full loop, we weren’t quite ready to leave. We spent a little more time soaking in the views, watching the sunlight sparkle on the turquoise water, and admiring the Dachstein Glacier one last time. It’s one of those places where every glance seems to reveal another beautiful photo opportunity, so don’t be surprised if you stay longer than planned.
Of course, no adventure would be complete without leaving a little surprise behind. Along the way, we hid a few of our penguin stones around the lake. If you’re visiting, keep your eyes open; you might spot one! And if you do, don’t forget to register your find on penguinstones.com before taking it on its next adventure.

How Long Do You Need
If you’re only planning to waddle the circular trail around Vorderer Gosausee, we’d recommend setting aside 2–3 hours. The loop itself takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, but it’s almost impossible not to stop for photos, enjoy the viewpoints, or sit by the lake for a while. We took it especially slowly because we were both recovering from injuries, so we made plenty of stops to rest, admire the scenery, and cool our feet in the glacier water. There was absolutely no rush, and that’s exactly how this place should be enjoyed.
If you have more time, you can easily turn your visit into a full-day adventure. Ride the Gosaukammbahn cable car up the mountain for spectacular panoramic views, tackle one of the many hiking trails in the Dachstein West area, continue to Hinterer Gosausee, or relax by the lakeshore with a coffee or ice cream. Whether you spend a couple of hours or an entire day here, Vorderer Gosausee is one of those places that rewards you for slowing down and taking it all in.

Best Time to Visit Vorderer Gosausee
Vorderer Gosausee is beautiful year-round, but every season offers a slightly different experience. If you’re visiting for the famous turquoise water and reflections of the Dachstein Glacier, we recommend coming between late spring and early autumn (May–October). During these months, the trail is usually snow-free, the cable car operates, boat rentals are available, and the lake shows off its incredible colors.
If possible, arrive early in the morning. The lake is much quieter, parking is easier to find, and you’ll have the best chance of seeing the Dachstein perfectly reflected on the calm water. We visited around midday on one of the hottest summer days, and while the views were still absolutely stunning, the parking lots were already filling up, and the heat made the walk much more challenging than it needed to be.
Autumn is another fantastic time to visit, as the forests around the lake turn golden and the crowds begin to disappear. Winter transforms Vorderer Gosausee into a peaceful snowy landscape, although parts of the walking trail may be icy or covered in snow, so proper footwear is essential.
Our tip: If you’re visiting Hallstatt, try to reach Vorderer Gosausee before 10:00 a.m. or later in the afternoon, after most day-trippers have left. You’ll enjoy a much quieter experience and have a better chance of finding a parking space close to the lake.
