Čičmany is one of Slovakia’s most distinctive villages, famous for its black timber houses decorated with traditional white geometric patterns that were originally painted to protect the wood and later became a symbol of local folk art. The village dates back to at least the 13th century. After a devastating fire in 1921, many of the houses were carefully rebuilt in this iconic style, preserving their unique character to this day. It’s now the world’s first folk architecture reserve. And of course, we couldn’t resist leaving a little penguin touch here. We hid our penguin stone (we actually hid two), and this one is on the information board right next to the parking area, so it’s super easy to find. You park, check the stone, and then waddle off to explore the charming streets of Čičmany.
