A Quick Hike in Oščadnica Worth Adding to Your Stay

Not every hike needs to take the whole day. While staying in Oščadnica, we squeezed in this short 4.5 km walk through the surrounding hills, and it turned out to be a lovely little addition to our summer weekend. Sometimes you want to go for a hike without making a whole day out of it. That was exactly the case during our stay in Oščadnica. We had a free morning, the weather was good, and the hills were basically right outside our door, so hiking it was. We got outside, enjoyed the quiet trails and surrounding nature, and were back with plenty of the day still ahead of us.

We spent a weekend in Oščadnica with friends, staying in a cottage surrounded by beautiful nature. And with all those hills around us, there was no way we were going to spend the entire weekend sitting at the cottage. So, one morning, we pulled on our hiking shoes and headed out for a short hike straight from our accommodation. Nothing too long or ambitious, just a couple of hours outside to see a little more of the area.

How to Get to Oščadnica

We came to Oščadnica by car, which is probably the easiest option, especially if you want to explore the surrounding Kysuce region while you’re there. From Bratislava, it’s around 220 km (137 mi) and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. If you’re coming from Košice, expect around 260 km (162 mi) and approximately 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes on the road.

You can also reach Oščadnica by public transport. The nearest useful railway station is Čadca, which has train connections with larger Slovak cities, including Bratislava and Košice. From Čadca, you can continue to Oščadnica by local bus, with the journey taking roughly 10–20 minutes depending on where in the village you’re heading. Since Oščadnica is quite spread out, having a car definitely gives you more flexibility, particularly if you plan to hike or explore places around Veľká Rača.

Where We Stayed in Oščadnica

For our weekend in Oščadnica, we stayed at Chalet in the Clouds, a spacious mountain chalet tucked away on Beskydok Hill and surrounded by the Kysuce Mountains. It was actually from here that we started our little morning hike, which made it incredibly easy to get out onto the trail. Our Short Hike from Oščadnica to Javorské

We woke up on Saturday morning to pretty much perfect hiking weather. After breakfast, we looked outside and knew we didn’t want to spend the whole day hanging around the chalet, especially with all that nature right on our doorstep. So, we put on our hiking shoes, packed a few essentials, and headed out for a short morning walk towards Javorské—nothing ambitious, just a nice little summer waddle to start the day.

We started the hike right from our chalet, following a quiet dirt road that pretty much went up, up, and up from the beginning. The trail took us past open meadows and through patches of forest, and on such a warm summer morning, we definitely appreciated every bit of shade the trees gave us. There was hardly any breeze, the air felt warm and still, and all we could hear were the summer cicadas buzzing in the background, birds in the trees, and our footsteps along the dirt path. Whenever we left the forest, the landscape opened up again into green meadows and views of the surrounding hills. And, of course, we couldn’t go for a hike without adding a little penguin touch, we hid a few penguin stones along the way, ready for someone else to find.

Not long after, we reached the top of Javorské, sitting at around 800 metres (2,625 ft) above sea level. It is not your typical mountain summit with a big cross or dramatic rocky peak, but rather a peaceful open spot surrounded by the Kysuce countryside. There is a small shelter where hikers can take a break or even spend the night, as well as a designated space where you can camp. You will also find a fireplace, making it a lovely spot to stop for a longer break, especially if you come prepared for a little picnic. We took some time here to catch our breath and simply enjoy the views. From the top, the landscape opens up beautifully across the surrounding green hills, forests and scattered cottages and after walking uphill most of the way, sitting down and taking it all in felt pretty rewarding.

We took a little break at the top, enjoying the views and the quiet before it was time to head back down. From Javorské, we simply followed the same route back to our chalet, this time with the nice bonus of going mostly downhill. We took our time, stopped here and there, and just enjoyed being outside. The whole hike was short and sweet, and that was exactly what we wanted. It wasn’t meant to be the main event of our weekend in Oščadnica. And sometimes, those simple little walks turn out to be exactly what you need.

Don’t Miss a Sunrise or Sunset Walk in Oščadnica

Apart from the hike itself, one thing we really recommend while staying in Oščadnica is simply heading out for a waddle around sunrise or sunset. You don’t need a particular trail or destination, the area itself is beautiful, with rolling green hills, meadows, forests and little cottages scattered across the landscape. When the sun starts coming up or dropping behind the hills, everything becomes even more peaceful. We loved just wandering around, enjoying the quiet and watching the light change across the Kysuce countryside. Sometimes you don’t need a big hike; a pair of shoes and a short evening waddle are more than enough.

Stop by the Church of the Assumption in Oščadnica

If you head down into the centre of Oščadnica itself, there is one more place we recommend stopping by: the beautiful blue Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie). You really can’t miss it, it sits right by the main road in the centre of the village. The current stone church dates back to 1804, when it replaced an earlier wooden church built in 1788. Originally dedicated to St. Stephen the King, it was renamed in honour of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in 1921, and a major reconstruction and extension followed in 1941. We loved its distinctive blue exterior, so it was an easy excuse to stop for a few photos. And, of course, we couldn’t leave Oščadnica without a little penguin addition, we hid a penguin stone close by, so keep your eyes open if you visit.

• Veľká Rača. One of the best-known mountains in the Kysuce region, with hiking trails, beautiful views and plenty of outdoor activities throughout the year.
• Snowparadise Veľká Rača. The main ski resort in Oščadnica, which also offers activities during the summer months.
• Dedovka Lookout Tower. A wooden observation tower above Oščadnica with panoramic views across Kysuce and the surrounding mountains.
• Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The distinctive blue church in the centre of Oščadnica that is worth a quick stop while exploring the village.
• Kysuce Museum – Vychylovka Open-Air Museum. A traditional open-air museum where you can see historic wooden houses and learn more about life in the Kysuce region.
• Historic Forest Railway in Vychylovka. One of the most interesting attractions nearby, where you can ride a historic narrow-gauge forest railway through the countryside.
• Čadca. The main town of the Kysuce region, around a short drive from Oščadnica and a good option for restaurants, shopping or simply exploring a little more of northern Slovakia.
• Trojak. Slovakia, Czechia & Poland Border Point – A fun hiking destination where the borders of Slovakia, Czechia and Poland meet in one spot.

As mentioned, this was a short and simple hike, but we can definitely recommend it if you’re staying in Oščadnica and want to explore a little more of the surrounding countryside. You don’t always need a long or challenging trail to enjoy being in the mountains. We loved the mix of forests, meadows, peaceful views and the little break at Javorské before wandering back down to our chalet.
