Chalet in the Clouds is in the village of Oščadnica, surrounded by the Kysuce Mountains. It sleeps up to 17 guests and comes with a private Finnish sauna, a wood-fired hot tub, a cozy fireplace, and a spacious terrace with mountain views. Whether you’re here for hiking, skiing, or simply slowing down, it’s a great place to recharge. We had a fantastic stay and would happily return.

Chalet in the Clouds Slovakia

While planning a weekend getaway with our high school friends, we wanted a place where we could all stay together, catch up, and enjoy a few days away from our busy routines. That’s how one of our friends found Chalet in the Clouds in Oščadnica. Perched on a hillside in the Kysuce Mountains, it offered exactly what we were looking for: plenty of space, a private sauna and hot tub, and beautiful mountain views. It turned out to be the perfect base for relaxing, spending time together, and exploring the area over the weekend.

Chalet in the Clouds is a modern mountain retreat in the village of Oščadnica, in northern Slovakia. Designed for families and larger groups, it accommodates up to 17 guests across four bedrooms. It features four bathrooms, a spacious living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private wellness area with a Finnish sauna and a wood-fired hot tub. Located at the foot of Veľká Rača, the highest peak in the Kysucké Beskydy Mountains, the chalet is a great base for hiking, cycling, and skiing year-round. Oščadnica, first mentioned in historical records in 1579, is one of the best-known mountain villages in the Kysuce region and has preserved its traditional mountain character while offering easy access to nature and outdoor activities.

Chalet in the Clouds is located on Beskydok Hill, on the edge of Oščadnica in northern Slovakia. Surrounded by the Kysuce Mountains, it sits in a quiet hillside setting while still being only a short drive from the village center and the Snow Paradise Veľká Rača ski resort. The chalet is best reached by car, as there is no practical public transport directly to the property. If you’re driving from Bratislava, expect a journey of around 3 hours (approximately 240 km / 149 miles). From Košice, the drive takes about 3 hours, covering roughly 230 km (143 miles).

One thing to keep in mind is that the chalet sits at the very top of the hillside and is one of the last properties on the road. During our summer visit, reaching it by car was straightforward, though the road steepens near the end. If you’re visiting in winter, be prepared for snowy and icy conditions. A vehicle with good winter tires is essential, and depending on the weather, snow chains or a four-wheel-drive vehicle may be needed to reach the chalet comfortably. Once you arrive, however, you’ll be rewarded with peaceful surroundings and panoramic mountain views.

Free private parking is available directly in front of the chalet. There is enough space for around four cars, making it convenient for larger families or groups traveling together.

  • Snow Paradise Veľká Rača: 4 km (2.5 mi) • 10 minutes
  • Veľká Rača Summit: 6 km (3.7 mi) • 15 minutes (cable car or hiking)
  • Kalinov Peak Lookout Tower: 8 km (5 mi) • 15 minutes
  • Megoňky Stone Spheres: 10 km (6.2 mi) • 15 minutes
  • Čadca Town Centre: 12 km (7.5 mi) • 20 minutes
  • Adventure Golf Oščadnica: 4 km (2.5 mi) • 10 minutes
  • Stará Bystrica Astronomical Clock: 22 km (13.7 mi) • 30 minutes
  • Žilina: 35 km (22 mi) • 40 minutes
  • Terchová (Jánošík region): 45 km (28 mi) • 50 minutes

Although we didn’t arrive in time for the check-in ourselves, our friends had already reached the chalet and collected the keys. They told us the whole process was smooth and well organized. The owner had everything prepared in advance, handed over the keys without issue, and had all the necessary paperwork ready to be signed. By the time we arrived, everything was set up, and we could unpack and start enjoying the weekend. Throughout the booking process, communication was excellent. She replied quickly to messages, answered all questions promptly, and made the entire experience easy from start to finish.

Chalet in the Clouds is spread across two floors and comfortably accommodates up to 17 guests. On the ground floor, you’ll find one bedroom with a double bed, making it a convenient option for anyone who prefers to avoid stairs. Upstairs, there are three additional bedrooms. One features a double bed and three extra single beds, while the other two each include a double bed and two extra single beds. In total, the chalet offers four bedrooms, making it an excellent choice for large families or groups of friends who want to stay under one roof while still having plenty of sleeping space.

All of the bedrooms are spacious and offer plenty of room to unpack and settle in. Each room includes a double bed, two bedside tables, a wardrobe for storing your clothes and luggage, and a TV. The layout is simple and practical, making the rooms comfortable for both short weekend stays and longer holidays.

The ground-floor bedroom is the only one without an en-suite bathroom, but it has a separate bathroom just a few steps away on the same floor, so it still feels almost private. The three upstairs bedrooms each have their own en-suite bathroom, which was a big plus for our group. Every bathroom includes a shower, toilet, sink with a mirror, and a hairdryer. Fresh towels and toilet paper were already provided, so everything was ready when we arrived. The only thing we missed was a small complimentary set of toiletries, such as shower gel or shampoo. That said, this is a self-catering chalet rather than a hotel, so it wasn’t something we expected.

The common area is the heart of the chalet and where we spent most of our time together. It is a large open-plan space connected to the kitchen, making it perfect for groups. There is a large TV with a sound system, and we used it to watch YouTube videos and play music throughout the weekend. A huge sofa and coffee table create a comfortable place to relax, while a bookshelf filled with children’s books keeps younger guests entertained. We also loved the large dining table, where everyone could sit together for breakfast and dinner. The chalet features a fireplace, which we can imagine makes the space even cozier during the winter months, as well as a table football game that added a bit of friendly competition. Overall, the space is thoughtfully designed, well maintained, and ideal for spending quality time together.

Another nice feature is the dedicated children’s playroom upstairs. It’s filled with toys and games, giving younger guests their own space to play while the adults relax downstairs or on the terrace. If you’re traveling with small children, this is definitely a great addition that keeps them entertained for hours.

The kitchen is part of the open-plan living area, making it easy to cook while still being part of the conversation. It is fully equipped with everything we needed for our stay, including an oven, stovetop, microwave, coffee machine, dishwasher, cookware, plenty of cutlery, dishes, and glasses. There was enough tableware for our entire group, so we never had to worry about running out of plates or utensils. The only thing we felt could be improved was the fridge’s size. Considering the chalet accommodates up to 17 guests, a larger, American-style refrigerator would provide more space for everyone’s food and drinks during longer stays. Otherwise, the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals comfortably.

The outdoor area was probably our favorite part of the chalet, and it’s where we spent most of the weekend. At the back of the house, there is a large terrace with two outdoor tables and plenty of chairs, making it the perfect spot for long breakfasts, evening drinks, or simply enjoying the mountain views. On the side of the chalet, there’s also a bench, which comes in handy when putting on your hiking boots before heading out.

The terrace overlooks the spacious garden, where you’ll find a covered gazebo with outdoor seating and a barbecue area. What we especially appreciated was the outdoor sink, which made preparing food and cleaning up much easier without constantly having to go back inside. The whole outdoor space is well thought out and ideal for spending time together, whether you’re having a meal, relaxing with a drink, or enjoying a warm summer evening.

The outdoor area also includes a private wellness zone, featuring a wood-fired hot tub and a Finnish sauna for around six people. One of our favorite details was the large panoramic window in the sauna, which lets you look out over the surrounding countryside while relaxing. It made the whole experience feel even more peaceful.

At the far end of the garden, there’s also a fire pit with benches, where we spent one evening chatting and enjoying the atmosphere. Overall, the garden offers plenty of places to relax and spend time together. The only thing we felt was missing was a proper barbecue grill. We had planned to grill burgers, but since there wasn’t one available, we ended up cooking them in the kitchen instead. Other than that, we really enjoyed the outdoor facilities.

One of our favorite things about Chalet in the Clouds was its location. As one of the last chalets on the road, it feels surrounded by nature, with very little traffic or noise. During our stay, we took a short hike up one of the nearby hills, enjoying the warm summer weather and beautiful views along the way. It was exactly the kind of peaceful mountain atmosphere we had hoped for and one of the biggest highlights of the weekend.

Right next to the chalet, there are also horses, and horse riding is offered as an additional experience. We were hoping to book a ride for the children, so we called in the morning. We were told someone would confirm later whether the horses would be available. Unfortunately, we eventually received a call saying the horses weren’t ready, so the ride didn’t happen. It was a little disappointing, especially for the kids, but it didn’t take away from our overall enjoyment of the stay.

For our stay from Friday to Sunday (24th and 26th of July, 2026), we paid €1,300 for two nights, which worked out to €650 per night for the entire chalet. While it’s certainly on the more expensive side, we felt the price was justified considering what you get. The chalet accommodates up to 17 guests and includes a private Finnish sauna, a wood-fired hot tub, a spacious garden, a large common area, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and ample indoor and outdoor space for larger groups.

There were only a few small things we felt could be improved, such as adding a larger fridge for bigger groups, providing a proper barbecue grill, and including complimentary toiletries like shower gel or shampoo. None of these affected our stay in a significant way, and we’d happily return. If you’re traveling with a large family or a group of friends and plan to make full use of the facilities, Chalet in the Clouds offers excellent value despite its higher nightly rate.

★★★★☆

We had a fantastic weekend at Chalet in the Clouds and would happily return. The chalet is beautifully designed, spacious, and works exceptionally well for larger groups. We especially loved spending time on the terrace, relaxing in the sauna and hot tub, and gathering around the large dining table after a day of hiking. The peaceful location at the very end of the road, surrounded by nature, made it easy to switch off and enjoy the mountains. There are a few small things we’d improve, such as adding a larger fridge for bigger groups, providing a proper barbecue grill, and including basic toiletries in the bathrooms. Our only real disappointment was that the horse-riding experience advertised next to the chalet wasn’t available during our stay, despite our attempts to book it in advance. These were minor issues, though, and they didn’t take away from what was otherwise an excellent stay.
If you’re looking for a luxury mountain chalet in Slovakia for a family gathering, celebration, or weekend away with friends, Chalet in the Clouds is an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of place where everyone naturally comes together, and it’s easy to see why guests consistently praise its peaceful location, spacious rooms, cleanliness, and thoughtful design.
