Funchal is a city that captivates visitors with its natural beauty and historical charm. Among its many hidden treasures, one distinctive feature is the captivating doors of Funchal. These enchanting portals offer a unique glimpse into the city’s rich history and artistic heritage. Put your walking shoes on and waddle with us through the streets of Funchal.

The doors of Funchal adorn the cobbled streets and narrow alleys of the city’s historic center. As you waddle through the heart of Funchal, you’ll find them mainly on Rua de Santa Maria.

Rua de Santa Maria is one of Funchal’s oldest and most colorful streets. You will find it in the old town (zona velha). The cobbled street leads up to the church of Santa Maria Maior and is wide enough only for pedestrians. Apart from the art, you will find restaurants, cafes, and the odd art gallery or two.

The narrow street dates back to 1430 and has recently become one of Funchal’s most popular tourist attractions after the local council came up with an initiative to revamp the slightly run-down and neglected area. And we are glad they did because it looks stunning and feels like walking around in a gallery.

The “Art of Open Doors” project began in 2014 and transformed a street into a public art space. Local artists were invited to work on over two hundred doors, creating unique pieces of art. The primary goal was to create an immersive experience for people walking along the street and invite them to engage with art in a deeper way.

It’s fascinating to know that many of these doors have witnessed centuries of history, bearing witness to the city’s evolution from a small fishing village to the vibrant capital it is today. Some doors even boast original features that date back to the 16th century.

One thing all doors have in common is that they all come in a dazzling array of colors, creating a visual feast for passersby.

    • “Casa das Mudas” – A Timeless Elegance: This door, adorned with intricate ironwork, graces one of Funchal’s most historic buildings, offering a window into the luxury of bygone eras.
    • “Azulejo Enchantment” – Rua de Santa Maria: This street is a veritable gallery of Azulejos, showcasing the vivid tales of Madeira’s maritime history.
    • “The Royal Welcome” – Forte de São Tiago: The entrance to this 17th-century fort is a majestic wooden door that once guarded the city against invaders, now welcoming visitors to explore its rich history.
    • “The Bohemian Portal” – Rua de Santa Maria, 171: This door exudes an artistic flair with its colorful tiles and whimsical designs, inviting you to step into a world of creativity.
    • “Timeless Elegance” – Rua do Bispo: Adorned with intricate wrought iron, this door is a testament to the craftsmanship that defines Funchal’s architectural heritage.
    • “The Oceanic Gateway” – Avenida do Mar: This modern door leads to the city’s vibrant waterfront promenade, offering a seamless blend of contemporary design and maritime heritage.
    • “The Floral Fantasy” – Rua de Santa Maria, 199: A profusion of blooming flowers adorns this door, reflecting the island’s lush botanical treasures.
    • “The Art Nouveau Marvel” – Rua da Carreira, 46: This door is a stunning example of Art Nouveau design, with curved lines and intricate details that transport you to a bygone era.
    • “Rustic Elegance” – Rua da Carreira, 113: This door exudes a rustic charm, with weathered wood and a time-worn patina that speaks of years gone by.
    • “The Palatial Entrance” – Palácio de São Lourenço: This grand door leads to the official residence of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, offering a glimpse into the island’s political history.

The project has successfully revitalized the old town by adding more color and energy to the area. Now, you can stop and explore the fascinating doors more, leading them to the resident cafes and restaurants. The street is no longer just a thoroughfare or generic dining quarter but has become a destination in its own right.

Whether you are an art lover or not, you will enjoy the waddle around the colorful streets of Funchal in Madeira. Take your time to appreciate these unique treasures that have borne witness to centuries of life on this enchanting island and, as we always say, waddle on.
