Trying a traditional Norwegian waffle was one of those little experiences we really wanted to tick off our Oslo bucket list. Surprisingly, finding the famous Norwegian waffle was harder than we expected. Just when we started wondering where everyone was hiding theirs, we came across Haralds Vaffel. Naturally, we waddled in to find out what makes this Norwegian favorite so special.

We waddle towards Haralds Vaffel, and just as we turn the corner, the shop suddenly appears. Against the softer, more muted colors of the surrounding streets, it is impossible to miss. A bright yellow marquee stretches above the entrance, while pink walls give the little shop a playful, almost confectionery-like appearance. It looks less like a place to grab a quick bite and more like a place that has decided waffles deserve their own colorful little stage.

A crowd is already gathered outside, and our first thought is that we might be in for a long wait. Finding a proper Norwegian waffle has proved trickier than expected, though, so we are not about to turn around now. As we get closer and step inside, the initial concern about the queue gives way to curiosity.

The interior feels just as cheerful as the exterior. It is cozy, colorful, and full of character, with a relaxed, almost neighbourhood-café atmosphere. The place feels wonderfully unpretentious. Rather than trying to look polished or formal, Haralds Vaffel embraces its playful personality, making the simple pleasure of eating a waffle feel like an experience in itself.

The space has a lively buzz, with people coming and going and the promise of freshly made waffles drawing everyone towards the counter. It feels like the kind of place where you can pop in for a quick treat but end up lingering a little longer, watching the activity and taking in the atmosphere. The colorful surroundings also make a welcome change from the more understated Scandinavian interiors we often associate with Oslo.
First impressions count when you are searching for a particular local specialty, and Haralds Vaffel certainly knows how to catch your eye. The bright façade draws you in, but the cozy setting and cheerful energy make you want to stay. Now, of course, comes the important part: finding out whether the waffles taste as good as the shop looks.

Norwegian waffles are a beloved part of local food culture, and they look a little different from the thick, square waffles you might know. Thin, soft, and heart-shaped, they are usually served with toppings like jam, sour cream, or brunost, Norway’s distinctive brown cheese with a sweet, caramel-like flavor.

More than just a snack, waffles are a comforting staple enjoyed everywhere from cozy cafés to mountain cabins. Naturally, we couldn’t leave Oslo without trying this heart-shaped Norwegian classic for ourselves!

Stepping inside Haralds Vaffel felt a little overwhelming at first. So much was happening at once: colorful surroundings, people coming and going, and the general buzz of a popular food spot. Thankfully, the crowd gathered outside wasn’t waiting to order. Most people already had their waffles and were ready to head off, which was reassuring.

Once we joined the queue, things moved surprisingly quickly. The staff worked efficiently, so we didn’t have to wait long to place our order. After that, we just waited for our waffles. The whole process felt well suited to a place that attracts plenty of hungry visitors throughout the day.

One thing worth keeping in mind is that the shop itself is quite small. With limited seating, Haralds Vaffel feels more like a grab-and-go stop than a café where you settle in for a leisurely afternoon. People pop in, order their waffles, pick them up, and make room for the next customers.

Our advice? Embrace the lively atmosphere, be patient if there’s a queue, and be ready to enjoy your waffle on the go. After all, we came for a taste of Norway’s famous waffle tradition, and we were eager to see what was waiting in that paper wrapping.

Haralds Vaffel keeps its menu focused on waffles, but it still offers enough variety to make choosing a little difficult. The menu features four signature combinations, from the simple pairing of butter and Norwegian brown cheese to jam with whipped cream. You can also add a scoop or two of ice cream, choose your toppings, and order a coffee to go with your waffle.

Naturally, we gravitated towards the bestseller: Rømme, Jam and Brown Cheese (NOK 79). This combination brings together three distinctly different flavors: tangy sour cream, sweet jam, and brunost, the Norwegian brown cheese known for its caramel-like sweetness. It sounded like exactly the kind of local specialty we had come to try.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

The waffle arrived topped with jam, generous spoonfuls of sour cream, and slices of brown cheese. The first thing to note is the texture. Our waffle was just a bit soggy, missing some of the crispness we’d hoped for. However, it was a minor drawback, not a deal-breaker.

The real magic was in the topping combination. The jam brought fruity sweetness, the sour cream added a refreshing tang, and the brown cheese contributed a rich, almost caramel-like flavor. Each element had its own character, yet none overwhelmed the others. Together, they created a balanced bite that was sweet, creamy, tangy, and distinctly Norwegian.

You don’t need a knife and fork to appreciate this waffle. We folded it over, brought it to our beaks, and took a bite, letting the toppings mingle with the soft waffle beneath. It was a wonderfully simple way to enjoy the combination, and the flavors worked beautifully together.

Would we have preferred a slightly crispier waffle? Absolutely. Did the toppings make up for it? For the most part, yes.

Go for the bestseller. The texture could have been better, but the jam, sour cream, and brown cheese make this waffle worth trying. Sometimes, the best food discoveries come from letting local traditions surprise your taste buds.

★☆☆

Haralds Vaffel is a cheerful little stop for anyone looking to try a Norwegian food classic in Oslo. The bestselling waffle, with jam, sour cream, and brown cheese, delivers a lovely balance of sweet, tangy, and caramel-like flavors, though the texture could be a touch crispier. We appreciated the colorful atmosphere and quick, efficient service, though the small space and steady stream of customers make it more of a grab-and-go experience than a place to linger over coffee. It is an easy addition to an Oslo food itinerary, especially if you want to try local specialties without spending a fortune.

Would We Recommend It? ✅  Yes.

Best For: Couples • Friends • Solo Travellers • Foodies • Budget-Conscious Travellers

Less Suitable For: Those looking for a spacious café, a quiet sit-down meal, or a place to linger for a long coffee break.

We paid NOK 158 for two bestselling waffles (approximately €14.75 in total, or €7.38 each). For a quick taste of a Norwegian food classic, we felt it was a fair price and a worthwhile experience. The combination of jam, sour cream, and brown cheese made this a memorable little food stop in Oslo, and we would happily recommend it to anyone curious about trying traditional Norwegian waffles.
