When you travel enough, you start coming across museums dedicated to just about everything. Some are interesting, some are a little random, and now and then you stumble upon something completely unexpected. That was exactly the case when we visited Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia. Hidden in this charming UNESCO town is the Love Bank, the only Love Bank in the world. Naturally, we had to see what all the fuss was about, and it turned out to be one of the most unique attractions we have visited.
Inspired by the famous Slovak poem Marína, the Love Bank is an interactive museum that celebrates love through immersive exhibits, fascinating stories, and even personal safety deposit boxes where couples can symbolically store their treasured memories. In this guide, we’ll share everything you need to know before visiting the Love Bank in Banská Štiavnica, including ticket prices, opening hours, what to expect during your visit, and whether it’s worth adding to your itinerary in Slovakia.

As a result, the museum is not welcoming visitors while recovery and restoration efforts are underway. What Was the Love Bank
The Love Bank was much more than just a museum. It was a unique cultural project dedicated to preserving one of Slovakia’s greatest love stories and restoring the historic house where Marína, the muse of Slovak poet Andrej Sládkovič, once lived. Inspired by the world’s longest love poem, Marína, the museum celebrated love through interactive exhibits while helping protect an important piece of Slovak heritage.
The story behind the Love Bank dates back to the 1840s. When Andrej Sládkovič learned that the love of his life, Marína, was going to marry someone else, he poured his emotions into what became the world’s longest love poem. He began writing Marína in 1844 and completed it in 1846, one year after her wedding. Spanning an incredible 2,900 verses, the poem became one of Slovakia’s most treasured literary works. Their story has often been described as Slovakia’s version of Romeo and Juliet. However, it had a less tragic ending, and it inspired the creation of the Love Bank, allowing visitors to experience this remarkable love story in a truly unique way.
The World’s Longest Love Poem
At the heart of the Love Bank was Marína, the world’s longest love poem. Written by Slovak poet Andrej Sládkovič, the poem consisted of an incredible 2,900 verses and was inspired by his deep love for Marína Pišlová. Although the two never married, their story became one of the most famous love stories in Slovak history, and Marína went on to become one of the country’s greatest literary masterpieces.
You might wonder what someone could write about for 2,900 verses. The answer is love. In fact, the word “love” appeared 168 times throughout the poem. Over the years, Marína has been translated into eight languages, including Slovak, English, German, French, Hungarian, Polish, Hindi, and Serbo-Croatian, allowing readers around the world to experience this remarkable story.
One of the highlights of visiting the Love Bank was seeing the only true facsimile of Marína’s original manuscript. While the authentic manuscript is safely preserved in the Slovak National Library, the museum displayed its faithful replica in the very house where Marína once lived. Walking through the historic rooms while listening to the story unfold made the poem come alive in a way that simply reading it never could.
What to Expect at the Love Bank
Stepping inside the Love Bank felt like stepping into the middle of the poem itself. The entire exhibition was inspired by Marína’s verses, allowing visitors to experience one of Slovakia’s greatest love stories in a truly immersive way.
The visit began with a short presentation before leading through a series of beautifully designed rooms, each telling a different part of the story. Every space offered something unique, but one of our favorites was a room filled with interactive portraits that immediately reminded us of Harry Potter. Portraits of Marína, her parents, Andrej Sládkovič, and other important figures appeared to talk to one another. What made it even more impressive was that their conversations consisted entirely of verses from the original poem.
As we continued through the exhibition, we became more immersed in the lives of Marína and Andrej. The interactive displays, storytelling, and carefully designed rooms brought the famous poem to life and made it much more engaging than simply reading it on paper.
The experience ended in the Love Bank itself. This unique room was filled with thousands of small Love Boxes, each featuring a different fragment of the original manuscript. There were exactly as many boxes as there were letters, spaces, and punctuation marks in the poem Marína.
Visitors had the opportunity to purchase a Love Box and store a small symbolic keepsake measuring up to 70 × 95 × 9 mm. A box could be rented for one year for €50 or purchased forever for €100, with the permanent option even being inheritable. Many people used their boxes to preserve memories of romantic relationships, while others dedicated them to family members, friendships, or other meaningful moments.
Beyond being a memorable gift, every contribution also helped support the restoration of the historic house and the continued preservation of this remarkable cultural project.

The Love Bank was unlike any museum we had visited before. It combined history, literature, technology, and emotion into an experience that stayed with us long after we left. Even if you weren’t familiar with the story of Marína beforehand, the exhibition made it easy to appreciate why it became such an important part of Slovak culture. Although the Love Bank is currently closed following the devastating fire, we hope it will one day reopen its doors and welcome visitors once again.
