As we stayed there during our trip to Madeira, so let us guide you through the unique allure of Ribeira Brava and uncover the top attractions that make it a must-visit destination.

Ribeira Brava, which translates to “Wild River” in Portuguese, owes its name to the mighty river that flows through the town. The town was founded in the 15th century and was originally a small fishing village. Over the centuries, it grew important as an agricultural center, mainly known for cultivating sugar cane. The Engenho Velho, a historic sugar mill that still stands today, is a tangible reminder of this era. In the 20th century, Ribeira Brava witnessed modernization and development, yet it managed to preserve its distinctive charm. 

Getting to Ribeira Brava from Funchal

To reach Ribeira Brava from Funchal, you have a few convenient options. The most popular way is by car, which offers the flexibility to explore at your own pace. The journey along the winding coastal roads is as scenic as it gets, treating you to breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Depart from Funchal and head west on the VR1 highway. Along the VR1, you’ll find clear signage directing you towards Ribeira Brava. Keep an eye out for signs that indicate the direction you need to follow.

Alternatively, you can opt for a bus ride, providing a comfortable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.

Parking in Ribeira Brava is a breeze, with ample spaces in the town center and along the waterfront. The central car park, near the main square, is a convenient starting point for your exploration. From here, you can easily access the town’s attractions on foot.

• Praia da Ribeira Brava. This charming pebble beach is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea, offering crystal-clear waters and stunning views of the surrounding cliffs. If you love sunbathing, it’s perfect and has many wooden areas you can claim and lie on. Or, if you feel more adventurous, you can explore the rocky terrain along the coastline. You will see many locals here as the laid-back atmosphere and natural beauty make Praia da Ribeira Brava a perfect destination for those in search of a peaceful afternoon

• Ribeira Brava Promenade. Take a leisurely waddle along the enchanting Ribeira Brava Promenade, where the ocean meets the horizon in a blues dance. This picturesque walkway runs parallel to the coastline, treating you to sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. As you waddle along, the salty breeze whispers tales of distant adventures, and the rhythmic sound of the waves creates a soothing soundtrack to your stroll. The promenade invites you to savor the natural beauty and offers glimpses into local life and culture. Lined with charming cafes and colorful boutiques, it’s not just a walk – it’s a delightful journey of discovery. • Church of São Bento. The church will capture your attention immediately. Be prepared to be captivated by its enchanting architecture, the intricate details of the ornate wooden ceiling, and much more as you waddle inside. But what truly steals the show is the breathtaking display of azulejo tiles that adorn the church. These vibrant, hand-painted tiles tell their own stories. You will feel like you stepped back in time. 

• Mercado Municipal. You might know that Madeira is also famous for its production of bananas. And what better way to learn more about them and taste some than at the local market? And let us tell you. We had no idea that so many banana types existed. Get ready to waddle through this bustling market, immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture, and get a true taste of Madeira. As you waddle through the stalls, let the aromas of fresh produce and traditional Madeiran delicacies guide you. The local vendors are very friendly and talked to us a lot, explaining some produce we didn’t know about. Whether you’re a foodie seeking authentic flavors or just looking to soak up the lively atmosphere, the Mercado Municipal is a must-visit. Grab a snack, chat with the locals, and savor the essence of Madeira in every waddle. We also ended up buying some bananas, one produced from the Monstera plant. The “ananas banana” is considered edible and safe for humans, but make sure you eat it ripe because it can be poisonous. 😱

• Miradouro da Ribeira Brava. Madeira is not short of viewpoints, and Ribeira Brava has its own, where the views are straight-up postcard material! It is the most scenic viewpoint in town. This place isn’t just about seeing Ribeira Brava; it’s about soaking in the vibes of this charming town while the ocean waves do their thing in the background. Trust me, it’s a feast for the eyes – the kind you’d want to write home about (or at least post on your favorite social media).

• Miradouro da Terra Grande. This charming spot holds an extra special place in our hearts because it was the first viewpoint we got to experience in Madeira. An hour after landing, we were standing at this breathtaking spot where the scenery unfolds in a mesmerizing dance of lush landscapes with the ocean in the distance. We loved every minute there as we knew Madeira would be epic after this.
  

•  Muralha Terrace. This is the ONE restaurant we recommend to get something to eat. We usually try to eat elsewhere, but we returned to this one. Perched on a hillside, Muralha Terrace offers panoramic views of the town and the azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The ambiance is perfect for any occasion, whether you’re seeking a romantic dinner or a leisurely lunch. Don’t think simply go and experience for yourself. 

• São Bento Fort. Here, history meets a hint of pirate drama! Picture this fort standing tall, not because it had to fend off pirate and corsair attacks back in the day, but because it’s now a quirky time capsule of that bygone era. Built when pirates were the neighborhood troublemakers, this fort in Ribeira Brava is like the superhero lair of the coastal towns. The São Bento Fort isn’t just bricks and mortar; it’s a living piece of history. Today, it stands as a reminder of the times when life on the coast meant being on the lookout for more than just the perfect wave. It’s the kind of place where you can almost hear the creaking of old ships and the distant shouts of pirates. So, if you’re into a bit of historical charm with a side of pirate tales, São Bento da Ribeira Brava Fort is the spot.

• Port Of Ribeira Brava. Here, you won’t find people strolling along the waterfront; it’s more the local fishermen go about their daily routines, and curious visitors join in for a taste of the seaside charm. It’s also the place where the locals go, especially the youth. With the vast ocean stretching out before you, the views from this port are nothing short of stunning. It’s not just a place to dock boats; it’s a gateway to the heart of Ribeira Brava. The atmosphere is relaxed, mirroring the unhurried rhythm of the waves lapping against the shore. And while waddling toward it, you must go through a tunnel – very exciting!

Ribeira Brava offers a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Funchal, and we recommend it as well when you want to avoid staying in the capital but look for a place somewhere else yet still close by. Or it’s perfect as a one-day trip.
