Let us say this first: experiencing a sunrise in Madeira is a must! And there are countless places where you can do so. Where you can see the first rays of the sun gently caress the rugged cliffs and illuminate the Atlantic’s azure waters, the Miradouro do Juncal is our favorite, where the magic of sunrise unfolds like a captivating symphony. This vantage point offers a sunrise experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. Read on to learn where to park, what to expect, and more.

Miradouro do Juncal is on the northern coast of Madeira, Portugal. Accessible by car or public transport, this vantage point is approximately a 45-minute drive from Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The winding roads that lead to this viewpoint offer picturesque views of Madeira’s lush landscapes, creating an anticipation that builds with every turn.

If you come by car from Funchal, start by heading north on the VE4-1 motorway. Continue on this road until you reach São Vicente, approximately a 45-minute drive. Once you’re in São Vicente, follow the signs for Miradouro do Juncal. There will not be many cars on the road this early in the morning, so the probability of a car you meet going the same way is very high.

Miradouro do Juncal is a relatively remote viewpoint in Madeira, but there is a designated spot for parking. To be more precise, there are two such areas. The first one, Parque de Pico do Areeiro, is on your right side as you approach it. From there, you must waddle up about 1.2 km (about 0.75 miles) to Centro Freira da Madeira. It is a restaurant/souvenir shop with all the amenities one might need, but beware, they won’t be open this early morning. Up here is the second parking area, Parque de Estacionamento Pico do Areeiro, which is closer, but you can park there only for one hour. So if you are only here for the sunrise, then sure, park here, but if you plan to continue the hike from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo and back, then park on the parking lot down, where the hike starts. Both parking areas are free of charge.

We came early, as did all the dozens of people 😅. We were too lazy to park down, so we went up with the car. If you do the same, you will also see cars parked along the road—a lot of cars. So we went up to the first parking lot, which was already full, of course, and turned around to park along the road. There will be plenty of people and many cars, so go up and check if there is space and park.

We saw later the police coming up and checking the cars and fearing a fine, but I think they are used to this during sunrise. Note that after sunrise, we re-parked our car at Parque de Pico do Areeiro, and we started our waddle here.

So, all in all, parking is a crazy experience, and don’t be shy about going up and trying to find a spot. Or park down, but consider the time it will take to waddle up. There will be cars and people everywhere. However, when you plan on waddling the trail, we recommend parking on the down parking lot.  And the view from there is also quite impressive.

Miradouro do Juncal presents a panoramic view that spans the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean, with cliffs jutting dramatically from the coastline. This vantage point also offers a clear view of Ponte de São Jorge, a charming village in the hills. But what we enjoyed were the clouds. The sunrise here means you are standing above the clouds to experience nature’s beauty.

Be aware that although it used to be a serene and less crowded location, it’s not anymore. We expected around 30 to 20 people but were surprised to see much more. It didn’t spoil our experience, though. Everyone was thoughtful and respectful. The only challenge is to find a spot to sit down to experience the sunrise. We had to waddle around before we found one.

This is an important one. We visited Madeira in summer (end of August and beginning of September), but in the morning at 4.30 am it can get cold. So, dress in layers to stay comfortable and warm; the morning air is crisp. We put on layers even while waiting for the sun to rise. Layering is key.

It is free to visit this viewpoint.

On a clear day, if you visit the Juncal viewpoint (Miradouro do Juncal), you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the central mountain range of the island and its jagged peaks and lush green valleys. You can also catch a glimpse of the ocean on both sides.

This viewpoint is renowned for being the best sunrise spot in Madeira, attracting many tourists who flock here to witness the first rays of sunlight emerge over the horizon. If the weather is favorable, you will stand above a blanket of clouds to capture breathtaking sunrise views.

Also, as mentioned, expect a lot of people. However, what bothered us were the drones flying to capture the sunrise. It was silent and serene, and two or three drones flew above our heads. Pack your headset to listed to some music and drown the buzzing of the drones. But even the sound of the drones didn’t take away the breathatink experience you are on for.
