Sunny Beach is not the type of destination we usually seek out. We tend to prefer exploring cities, hiking trails, and finding hidden gems rather than spending our days on a beach. Yet this Bulgarian resort holds a special place in our hearts because it is where Miško the Penguin first joined our travels back in 2016. So while this trip started as a simple holiday, it quickly turned into an adventure. Here is our honest experience and whether Sunny Beach is still worth visiting today.

  • Location: Black Sea coast, eastern Bulgaria
  • Beach Length: Around 8 km (5 miles) of sandy coastline
  • Permanent Population: Fewer than 1,000 residents year round
  • Established: Officially developed as a resort in 1958
  • Peak Season: June to September
  • Accommodation: More than 800 hotels and holiday properties
  • Nearest Airport: Burgas Airport, approximately 30 km (19 miles) away
  • Beach Type: Wide sandy beach with shallow waters, popular with families
  • Known As: Bulgaria’s largest and most famous seaside resort
  • Famous For: Affordable holidays, nightlife, beach bars, and all-inclusive resorts
  • Best For: Families, beach lovers, groups of friends, and party-goers
  • Nearby Attraction: The historic town of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just a few kilometers away
  • Fun Fact: During summer, the population swells from a few hundred residents to tens of thousands of tourists, turning Sunny Beach into one of the busiest destinations on the Black Sea coast.

While Sunny Beach is where our own travel story with Miško the Penguin began back in 2016, the resort’s history goes back much further. Sunny Beach was established in 1958 as a seaside getaway for Bulgarian families looking to escape the cities and enjoy the Black Sea coast.

Over the decades, the small holiday resort grew into Bulgaria’s largest beach destination. Today, it stretches along a long sandy coastline and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. During winter, only a small number of people live here, but once summer arrives, Sunny Beach transforms into a lively resort filled with holidaymakers, beach lovers, families, and party-goers. Between the wide beach, water sports, restaurants, bars, and famous nightlife, it is easy to see why it remains one of Bulgaria’s most popular vacation spots.

Getting to Sunny Beach is easier than you might think. While Bulgaria is a large country, you do not need to fly into Sofia and then cross the country. Instead, most arrive via Burgas Airport, which sits just about 30 minutes from the resort.

From the airport, you can take a taxi, public bus, or arrange a hotel shuttle. If you choose the bus, keep in mind that many of the buses parked outside the terminal serve charter flights, and public transport schedules can vary depending on the season. Many hotels also offer airport transfers, making the journey to Sunny Beach quick and hassle-free.

Finding accommodation in Sunny Beach is rarely a problem. The resort stretches along the coast and offers more than 800 hotels, apartments, and holiday properties. Whether you are looking for a budget-friendly stay, a family resort with all-inclusive packages, or a luxury beachfront hotel, you will find plenty of options here.

Outside the busiest weeks of July and August, you can often find accommodation even without booking far in advance. During peak summer season, however, the most popular hotels can sell out quickly.

Some popular hotels in Sunny Beach include:

During our stay in Sunny Beach, we chose MPM Hotel Orel, a hotel located just steps from the sandy beach while still being connected to the lively boardwalk. We were lucky enough to get a room on one of the top floors, which rewarded us with fantastic views of the Black Sea every day.

The hotel offers everything you would expect from a typical beach resort. Throughout the day, the animation team organized activities, competitions, and entertainment for guests. We ended up spending quite a bit of time chatting with the animators and even played more than a few games of UNO together.

One of our favorite features was the selection of bars. The hotel has four bars operating throughout the day, including one directly on the beach. Being able to grab a cold drink without leaving the sand was definitely a nice touch.

Not everything was perfect, though. The biggest downside was the elevator. To this day, it remains the slowest elevator we have ever encountered. During busy periods, waiting for it could easily take fifteen or twenty minutes, so we often chose the stairs instead. Still, with views like ours, it felt like a small price to pay.

Me still young and naive

Food at MPM Hotel Orel

We always try to be fair in our reviews, but unfortunately, the food was the weakest part of our stay. Let’s start with the coffee. Calling it coffee might be a bit generous. It looked like coffee, but the taste was another story. We gave it a chance for a few days before eventually heading to the nearby McDonald’s for our morning caffeine fix.

The buffet offered plenty of choices, but quantity did not make up for the lack of quality. Many dishes were bland, and some did not seem particularly fresh. By the end of our stay, we found ourselves eating less and less at the hotel and looking forward to meals elsewhere in the resort.

One thing that surprised us was the restaurant’s bag policy. Before entering, guests had to leave any bags with employees at the entrance. We never quite understood the reasoning behind it, though it certainly felt unusual.

If there was one bright spot, it was the desserts. While the main dishes failed to impress us, the sweet treats were generally enjoyable and quickly became our go-to option after meals.

Fortunately, Sunny Beach has no shortage of restaurants, cafés, and fast food spots, so finding a better meal outside the hotel was never a problem.

Best Things to Do in Sunny Beach

Explore the Sunny Beach Boardwalk

If there is one place that captures the atmosphere of Sunny Beach, it is the boardwalk. Stretching alongside the beach, this lively promenade is packed with restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, supermarkets, fast food stands, amusement rides, arcades, and just about anything else you can imagine.

During the day, it is a great place to grab an ice cream, browse local shops, enjoy a meal with sea views, or simply people-watch while strolling along the coast. As the sun sets, the boardwalk transforms completely. Neon lights begin to glow, music spills out from bars and clubs, and the whole area comes alive with energy.

At times, it reminded us a little of Las Vegas. Not because of the size, but because of the constant mix of lights, sounds, attractions, and entertainment around every corner. You will find carnival games, small amusement rides, street performers, cocktail bars, and plenty of places to continue the night long after the beach empties.

Even if partying is not your thing, we still recommend spending at least one evening wandering the boardwalk. It is one of the best places to experience the unique atmosphere that has made Sunny Beach famous across Europe.

Relax on the beach

The beach is undoubtedly the main attraction of Sunny Beach. Stretching for around 8 kilometers (5 miles) along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, it is one of the longest and widest sandy beaches in the country. The soft golden sand, shallow waters, and gentle waves make it popular with both families and beach lovers.

One of our favorite things was simply wandering along the shoreline barefoot. There is plenty of space, even during the busy summer season, and the sea is usually calm and inviting on warm days.

As you explore the beach, you will notice that some sections are managed by nearby hotels and resorts. These areas typically offer sunbeds, umbrellas, and regular cleaning. Between them, you will also find public beach sections that are free to use. While these areas provide more flexibility, they are often less maintained than the private sections.

Beyond sunbathing, the beach is also a hub for water sports. Jet skis, parasailing, banana boat rides, paddleboarding, and beach volleyball are all popular activities during the summer months. Whether you want to spend the day relaxing with a book or filling it with adventure, there is plenty of space to do both.

Visit Nessebar

If you only leave Sunny Beach for one excursion, make it Nessebar. Located just a few kilometers south of the resort, this historic town sits on a small peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and is one of the most beautiful places on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

Often called the “Pearl of the Black Sea,” Nessebar boasts a history spanning more than 3,000 years and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you wander through its cobbled streets, you will discover ancient churches, traditional wooden houses, sea-view restaurants, and charming little shops selling local crafts and souvenirs.

One of the best things about visiting Nessebar is how easy it is to reach. You can get there by local bus, tourist train, taxi, or even on foot if you do not mind a longer stroll along the coast. We recommend spending at least a few hours exploring the old town, enjoying lunch with sea views, and taking in the relaxed atmosphere. Compared to the lively and sometimes chaotic energy of Sunny Beach, Nessebar feels like stepping into a completely different world.

Spend a Day at Action Aquapark

Need a break from the beach? Action Aquapark is one of the most popular attractions in Sunny Beach. The water park features numerous slides, pools, lazy rivers, and splash zones suitable for both children and adults. It is a fun way to cool off during the hottest summer days and makes a great family outing.

Take a Boat Trip on the Black Sea

One of the best ways to see the coastline is from the water. Several companies offer boat trips departing from Sunny Beach, ranging from relaxing sightseeing cruises to lively party boats. Depending on the tour, you may have the chance to swim in the Black Sea, enjoy lunch on board, or admire the coastline from a different perspective.

Try Water Sports

If relaxing on the beach is not enough excitement for you, Sunny Beach offers plenty of water sports. Popular options include jet skiing, parasailing, banana boat rides, paddleboarding, and water scooters. You will find rental stands all along the beach during the summer season.

Visit Luna Park

Located near the boardwalk, Luna Park is a small amusement park filled with rides, games, and attractions for all ages. From bumper cars and carousels to thrilling rides and arcade games, it is a fun place to spend an evening, especially if you are traveling with children.

Go Karting at Sunny Beach Track

For a bit of friendly competition, head to Sunny Beach Karting Track. The circuit offers karts for both beginners and experienced drivers, making it a fun activity for families, groups of friends, and anyone looking to add a little adrenaline to their holiday.

Experience Sunny Beach After Dark

Sunny Beach is famous for its nightlife, and it is easy to see why. As evening approaches, the resort transforms from a beach destination into one of the liveliest party spots on the Black Sea. Bars, clubs, restaurants, and beach venues fill with music and entertainment that often continues well into the night.
Even if partying is not your thing, we still recommend heading to the beach or boardwalk around sunset. Watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink over the sea is one of the most beautiful moments of the day and offers a much calmer side of Sunny Beach before the nightlife takes over.

Best Time to Visit Sunny Beach

The best time to visit Sunny Beach is between June and September, when temperatures are warm, the sea is pleasant for swimming, and most attractions, restaurants, and beach bars are fully open. July and August are the busiest months, bringing the warmest weather, the liveliest atmosphere, and the largest crowds.

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, consider visiting in June or September. The weather is still ideal for beach days, but accommodation prices are often lower, and the resort feels less crowded. Outside the summer season, many hotels, restaurants, and tourist facilities close, making Sunny Beach much quieter and less appealing as a beach destination.

Compared to many beach destinations in Western Europe, prices here are generally much lower, making it a great choice for budget-conscious travelers. Here are some rough prices you can expect during the summer season:

  • Beer: €2–4
  • Cocktail: €4–8
  • Restaurant meal: €8–15 per person
  • Fast food meal: €4–8
  • Sunbed and umbrella: €5–15 per day
  • Taxi from Burgas Airport: €20–40
  • Budget hotel: €30–60 per night
  • Mid-range hotel: €60–120 per night
  • Luxury beachfront hotel: €120+ per night

Of course, prices vary depending on the season, location, and level of comfort you are looking for. July and August are usually the most expensive months, while June and September often offer better deals and fewer crowds.

Where to Eat in Sunny Beach

While we were not impressed by the food at our hotel, we had much better luck once we started exploring the restaurants around Sunny Beach. Here are a few popular places worth considering:

  • Djanny Restaurant. One of the most popular restaurants in Sunny Beach, serving Bulgarian specialties, grilled dishes, pizzas, and generous portions at reasonable prices.
  • Hawaii Restaurant & Bar. A beachfront restaurant known for its sea views, cocktails, seafood, and relaxed atmosphere.
  • The Fat Cat. A lively restaurant offering burgers, ribs, steaks, and international comfort food in large portions.
  • Morris Beach Bar. A casual beachfront spot perfect for drinks, light meals, and watching the sunset over the Black Sea.
  • Khan’s Tent. Part restaurant, part entertainment venue. Perched on a hill overlooking Sunny Beach, it combines dinner with live performances and fantastic views.

One of the things we enjoyed most about Sunny Beach was wandering around and picking a restaurant that looked inviting.

How Long Do You Need in Sunny Beach

For most travelers, 3 to 5 days is the ideal amount of time to spend in Sunny Beach. This gives you enough time to relax on the beach, explore the boardwalk, enjoy a few restaurants, and take a day trip to Nessebar.

If your goal is to unwind by the sea and enjoy your resort, you could easily stay for a week or more. On the other hand, if you prefer sightseeing and exploring rather than beach holidays, two or three days will likely be enough to experience the main highlights before moving on to other destinations along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

Sunny Beach may not be our typical travel destination, but we still enjoyed our time here. Between the long, sandy beach, the lively boardwalk, nearby Nessebar, and countless activities, it is easy to see why so many people return year after year. Would we choose Sunny Beach over a destination filled with hiking trails, historic streets, and hidden gems? Probably not. Yet this resort will always hold a special place in our hearts because it is where our travel adventures began back in 2016.
If you are looking for an affordable beach holiday with plenty of entertainment, restaurants, and sunshine, Sunny Beach might be exactly what you are looking for. And who knows, perhaps your own adventure will begin here too.
