After visiting SEA LIFE Coex Aquarium in Seoul, we already knew we were not done with underwater adventures. So when we arrived in Busan and saw there was another SEA LIFE Aquarium right by Haeundae Beach, we had one simple thought. Penguins again? Yes please.

SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium became our second SEA LIFE stop in South Korea, and of course, we were curious. Would it feel the same as Seoul? Would it be bigger, better, different? Or would one clearly win? Naturally, we had to compare.

SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium is directly at Haeundae Beach, in the Haeundae district, one of the most popular and central areas of Busan. You will find it right along the beachfront promenade, making it extremely easy to combine with a beach walk, cafés, or nearby attractions like Blueline Park.

How to Get to SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium

The easiest way to get there is by subway. Take Busan Metro Line 2 and get off at Haeundae Station. From Exit 5 or 7, it is about a 5 to 10 minute walk straight toward the beach. Once you reach the promenade, the aquarium entrance is clearly visible.

You can also take a taxi if you are coming from another area of Busan. Just show the name “SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium,” and most drivers will know it immediately since it is one of the main attractions in Haeundae. If you are already exploring Haeundae Beach, you will literally walk past it. You cannot miss it.

We were staying at a hotel right near Haeundae Beach, so getting to SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium could not have been easier. We simply waddled over along the promenade, enjoying the sea breeze before heading underground into the ocean world.

Opening Hours 

The Busan aquarium is generally open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with the last entry usually at 7:00 PM. You can visit in the morning before heading to the beach, use it as a midday indoor break when the sun gets too strong, or even go in the early evening. We recommend visiting on a weekday or earlier in the day for a more relaxed experience.

As always, double-check the official website before your visit, especially during holidays or peak travel seasons, as hours can occasionally change.

Before heading to SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium, we checked ticket prices online. It is usually cheaper and much faster than buying directly at the entrance, especially in busy Haeundae.

Our Waddle Inside the Busan Aquarium

After waddling over from our hotel near Haeundae Beach, we were very happy we had bought our tickets online. We skipped the ticket queues completely and headed straight to the entrance, where they quickly scanned our pre-booked tickets. Smooth, easy, no waiting around. Within minutes, we were making our way downstairs into the aquarium, ready to dive into the underwater world. Something is exciting about descending into an aquarium. One moment you are by the beach, the next you are surrounded by ocean life. And of course, our penguin radar was already fully activated.

Penguins First? Yeas please!

The moment we stepped inside, we knew this would be our favorite SEA LIFE aquarium. Why? Because the penguin exhibition was almost the first thing you see. Right there at the beginning, we were greeted by the Humboldt penguins.

The glass was clean (not as in the Seoul SEA LIFE Aquarium), which made taking photos so easy, no weird reflections, no foggy panels, just a perfect close-up view. The penguins were also surprisingly active, swimming, waddling, diving, and popping back up again. It felt like we were really close to them, not just observing from far away.

And what was super cool, were the interactive screens next to the penguin habitat. There are fun activities where you can play penguin. You stand in front of a wall, and a penguin appears and is doing everything you are. It makes the experience more than just watching.
Starting the visit with penguins, clear viewing panels, and interactive exhibits? Safe to say, SEA LIFE Busan had already made a strong first impression.

The Mermaid Show

After having our fair share of penguin time, and yes, we did not want to leave them, we continued exploring the aquarium. And lucky us, we arrived just in time for the mermaid show.

The show tells a sweet story about a mermaid and a human girl who transforms into a mermaid to swim and play with her new underwater friend. Watching a “real” mermaid glide through the giant tank was mesmerizing. She swam alongside the fish, performed graceful underwater tricks, and interacted with the audience through the glass. It felt surprisingly magical.

It was our first time seeing a mermaid show in an aquarium, and we loved it. It adds that extra layer of imagination and storytelling to the visit, especially for kids, but let’s be honest, we were as fascinated. Seeing someone perform so smoothly underwater, surrounded by marine life, made the whole experience feel a little bit like ocean magic.

After the excitement of the mermaid show, we wandered into the jellyfish section, and the whole atmosphere shifted. The lights were dimmer, the tanks softly glowing in shades of blue and purple, and the jellyfish floated slowly through the water like living lanterns. There was something calming about it. The way they pulse, moving without any rush, almost makes you slow your own breathing. We stood there longer than we planned to, just watching them drift. It felt peaceful, almost meditative, and a complete contrast to the more energetic exhibits.

After drifting through the jellyfish glow, we waddled on to explore the rest of the aquarium. And there is actually a lot more waiting beyond the penguins and mermaids. From colorful reef tanks to deeper ocean zones, each section feels slightly different, keeping the experience interesting throughout.
The variety keeps the visit dynamic. One moment you are face to face with a shark, the next you are watching tiny seahorses curl around coral. It makes the whole underground waddle feel like moving through different layers of the ocean.

Another section we really enjoyed was the Amazon zone, where the atmosphere shifts from deep ocean blue to lush river habitat. Here you can spot freshwater species, including piranhas and other tropical river fish. It adds a completely different ecosystem to the experience, making the aquarium feel more diverse.

Another highlight is the 80-meter-long ocean tunnel. Waddling through it feels like stepping onto the ocean floor. Sharks glide above your head, rays float past, and schools of fish surround you from every angle. The main tank holds millions of liters of water and thousands of marine creatures, making the entire space feel immersive and alive. We always love aquarium tunnels, but this one felt especially spacious and dramatic.

Of course, no aquarium visit is complete without ending in the gift shop. And that is where the real struggle began. Once again, we were faced with the very serious decision of which penguin to bring home with us. Plush penguins in every size, keychains, mugs, tiny ones, giant ones. We circled the shelves at least twice. After spending so much time watching the real Humboldt penguins, waddling away without adopting a plush version felt impossible. But we managed to settle on one. Yes, you heard right. JUST one.

Our visit to SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium was such a fun and easy addition to our day. From the first penguin sighting to the glowing jellyfish and the ocean tunnel moments, it felt engaging, relaxed, and immersive. It is the kind of place where you lose track of time a little, and leave with way too many photos on your phone. And of course, very happy penguin hearts.

How Much Time to Spend at SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium

You will need around 1.5 to 2 hours to explore SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium. If you move quickly and skip shows, you could finish in about 60 to 90 minutes. But if you take your time at the penguin exhibit, watch the mermaid show, linger in the jellyfish zone, and waddle through the ocean tunnel, it easily turns into two relaxed hours. Since it is fully indoors and right by Haeundae Beach, it is also a great half day activity, especially if you combine it with a beach walk or nearby cafés.

Is SEA LIFE Busan Worth Visiting

Yes, especially if you enjoy marine life, need a rainy day activity, or are staying near Haeundae Beach. It’s not the largest aquarium in South Korea, but it is well designed, immersive, and easy to combine with other coastal attractions. The penguins right at the entrance, the 80 meter ocean tunnel, and the mermaid show make it feel more engaging than you might expect. If you are short on time or not a big aquarium fan, you could skip it. But for us, it was a fun, relaxed addition to our Busan itinerary and absolutely worth it, especially for fellow penguin lovers.

Best Time to Visit SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium

SEA LIFE Busan Aquarium is a great year round activity, but some moments are definitely better than others.

• Rainy Days. This is one of the best backup plans in Busan. When the beach plans fail, you can stay completely dry while still enjoying an ocean themed experience underground.
• Summer Heat Escape. Busan summers can be hot and humid. Since the aquarium is fully indoor and climate controlled, it is a perfect midday break from the strong sun at Haeundae Beach.
• Winter Indoor Activity. If you are visiting Busan in winter, this is an easy way to warm up while still doing something fun and interactive. It pairs nicely with a coastal walk on a colder day.
• Avoid Weekends Mid Afternoon. The busiest time tends to be weekends between 2 PM and 5 PM. If possible, go on a weekday or arrive shortly after opening for a more relaxed experience with fewer crowds around the penguin exhibit and ocean tunnel.

For us, weekday mornings or early afternoons feel just right. More space, better photos, and more uninterrupted penguin time.

Which Is Better: SEA LIFE Seoul COEX or SEA LIFE Busan?

After visiting both aquariums, we kept asking ourselves the big question. Which one did we actually like more? And for us, the answer is clear. Busan wins.

SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium in Seoul is larger overall and has a wider variety of themed zones. It feels big, busy, and very central since it is located inside a shopping mall. If you are already exploring Gangnam, it is super convenient and worth visiting.

But SEA LIFE Busan felt more immersive and better paced. The penguin exhibit being right at the beginning made it more exciting for us. The ocean tunnel more dramatic, and the overall layout flowed from one zone to the next. It also felt brighter and a bit more modern.

Another big factor is location. In Busan, you are steps away from Haeundae Beach. You can go from sand and sea to sharks and penguins within minutes. That coastal atmosphere adds something special to the whole experience.

For us, SEA LIFE Busan felt more magical. And yes, penguins at the entrance definitely helped.

SEA LIFE COEX Aquarium Seoul Guide: What to Expect

From locking eyes with Humboldt penguins right at the start to waddling under sharks in the ocean tunnel and catching a mermaid show, it was one of those easy wins on a Busan itinerary. Is it a must see for everyone? Maybe not. But if you love marine life, need a rainy day backup, travel with kids, or simply get excited about penguins like we do, it is absolutely worth it. Pair it with a beach stroll, a café stop, and make a relaxed half day out of it. And if there are penguins involved, you already know our answer. Always yes.
