As we made our way up toward the San Giovanni Fortress, we passed several small stone chapels quietly built into the mountainside above Kotor. Many of the small chapels along the fortress path were built as resting and prayer points for travelers and pilgrims over the centuries, offering both shelter and a moment of reflection during the demanding climb up to the fortress. One of these simple but beautiful stops felt like a peaceful pause point along the steep climb, with views opening up over the bay below. Surrounded by ancient stone walls and the sound of footsteps on the path, we decided to leave a penguin stone here, adding to the trail’s quiet atmosphere as we continued our ascent.
