From the Steirersee Viewpoint, we waddled down to the lake itself. Steirersee is a stunning alpine lake, one of the largesthigh-altitude lake plateaus in Europe. Sitting at an elevation of around 1,450 meters, the lake is known for its crystal-clear, emerald waters and tranquil surroundings, framed by the mighty peaks of the Totes Gebirge. Steirersee spans approximately 500 meters in length and reaches depths of up to 30 meters. The lake is fed by underground springs and rainwater, maintaining its pristine clarity year-round. Local legend tells of a water spirit, or Wassernixe, said to dwell in the lake’s depths, protecting its purity and luring travelers with her song, a story passed down through generations in the Salzkammergut region. Popular for hiking, swimming (though the water is chilly even in summer), and photography, Steirersee is part of a nature reserve and offers breathtaking views, especially in autumn when the larch trees turn golden. We found another wooden bench here to chill and eat something before continuing our waddle, and we also left a penguin stone here in the tree trunk next to the bench.
