While waddling and exploring, we usually try to find a nice spot for a break and have some coffee we’ve brought along. On the scenic Tauplitzalm plateau in the Austrian Part of the Totes Gebirge, the Steirersee viewpoint (locally known as Steirersee-Bankerl) provides a jaw-dropping panorama. From this wooden bench beneath shaded larch trees at 1 650 m, you’ll gaze down on the peaceful Steirersee, Tauplitzalm’s largest mountain lake. What makes this spot remarkable is the 360° backdrop: the jagged ridges of the Totes Gebirge rise dramatically behind the lake, with peaks like the iconic Sturzhahn (famously first climbed by Heinrich Harrer) and Traweng soaring overhead . To the east, you’ll glimpse the neighboring Schwarzensee and Großsee, while the western horizon is punctuated by the massive Grimming and the glaciated Dachstein massif, creating a sweeping glance across Styrian alpine wonders . The Tauplitzalm is the largest lake plateau in Central Europe, home to six mountain lakes nestled among flowery meadows and larch woods . After taking a break and enjoying a cup of coffee and a small snack, we hid a penguin stone next to the bench on the left side (or right if you sit on it). Take a break here as well and enjoy the views.
