Discover the Best of the Dominican Republic in 7 Days
The Dominican Republic is a tropical paradise with stunning beaches, lush mountains, and vibrant culture. We stayed here for one week (which was too short), but you can find everything here: adventure, relaxation, and historical exploration. We put together this one-week itinerary to give you the most out of this Caribbean paradise.

Day 1: Waddle around Santo Domingo
Many of you will be staying directly in Santo Domingo or a nearby resort. Whatever it is, we encourage you to visit the capital and learn more about the rich culture of the Dominican Republic.
Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, the brother of Christopher Columbus. It is home to the first cathedral, hospital, and university built in the New World, making it a treasure trove of history and colonial architecture. While here, you should explore the Colonial Zone, a UNESCO World Heritage site; visit Alcázar de Colón and the Catedral Primada de América.

Day 2: A Perfect Day on Saona Island
Start your day with an early morning catamaran or speedboat ride from Bayahibe or Punta Cana to Saona Island, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. Upon arrival, relax on the island’s pristine white-sand beaches and dip in the shallow turquoise waters. Snorkel in the coral reefs, spotting colorful marine life, or bask under swaying palm trees. Visit the famous “Natural Pool,” a shallow sandbank in the middle of the sea where you can wade in crystal-clear waters and see starfish. Saona Island was our favorite spot in the Dominican Republic. Learn more on what to do and see in our blog post-Saona Island, the Ultimate Caribbean Paradise.

Day 3: Whale Watching in Samaná Bay
If you are visiting between mid-January and late March, take a day trip to Samaná Bay, one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. Thousands of humpback whales migrate to the warm Caribbean waters for breeding and calving, offering an incredible wildlife spectacle. Start your day early with a drive or domestic flight to Samaná, then board a boat tour for a close-up view of these majestic creatures. Expect to see whales breaching, tail-slapping, and even mothers with their calves. Most tours last around three to four hours, making one day enough for an unforgettable experience. After the excursion, enjoy a fresh seafood lunch in Samaná town or visit nearby Cayo Levantado for a relaxing afternoon on its pristine beach.

Day 4: Exploring a Sugar Plantation & Range Christiano
We also encourage you to spend one day uncovering the history of the sugar plantations, a key part of the island’s past and present economy. Take a guided tour of a working sugar plantation, where you can witness the traditional process of sugarcane cultivation, from harvesting to processing, and even taste fresh sugarcane juice. Learn about the region’s deep cultural and historical significance of sugar production. We enjoyed learning more about the history; read more on our blog post The Sugar Plantations of the Dominican Republic.
To make the most of the day, combine this visit with a trip to a Ranche Christiano where you can ride horseback through scenic countryside trails, visit a local farm, and experience the peaceful rural lifestyle.

Day 5: Learn About Cigar Rolling & Rum Production
The Dominican Republic is famous for its cigar and rum production, so it would be a shame not to visit the production of both. We visited Rancho Real Cigars, a small family-owned ranch in the island’s heart. It is a cigar shop and a rolling factory in one. It will give you a rare glimpse into cigar-making while providing the best prices in the Dominican Republic.
Afterward, we encourage you to continue to a local rum distillery, where you’ll discover the history and craftsmanship behind the country’s famous spirits. Witness the aging process in oak barrels and taste premium Dominican rum varieties. This combination of cultural experiences offers a fascinating insight into two of the Dominican Republic’s most famous exports, making for an unforgettable and educational day trip.

Day 6: The Colonial City of Higüey
While you are in the Dominican Republic, you might visit Santo Domingo or Punta Cana, and towns like Higüey are not usually on anyone’s bucket list. Well, it was not ours either, but we had an opportunity to stop at it and explore a little. Higüey is a city rich in history and culture, offering a unique blend of traditional charm and modern attractions. As the capital of La Altagracia Province, Higüey boasts a population of approximately 150,000 residents. Its vibrant streets and warm community make it a must-visit destination if you are looking for the authentic side of the Dominican Republic.

Day 7: Hiking in the Dominican Republic
You can spend more than one day hiking in the Dominican Republic, which will be an unforgettable experience. You will find plenty of rainforests, rugged mountains, and breathtaking views. One of the most rewarding routes is the trek to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean at 3,098 meters (10,164 feet). Though typically a multi-day hike, experienced waddlers can challenge themselves to cover significant ground daily. For a shorter adventure, the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve offers well-maintained trails through a cloud forest rich in biodiversity. Another fantastic option is Salto de Aguas Blancas, a scenic hike leading to one of the highest waterfalls in the Caribbean. No matter which hike you choose, it’s guaranteed to be epic.

We hope this itinerary will inspire you to plan your unforgettable trip to the Dominican Republic. For sure, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories. The beauty of the Dominican Republic lies in its diversity—there’s always more to discover, from hidden waterfalls to vibrant cultural experiences. We loved every minute we spent here and looking forward to returning.
