Madeira is a paradise for nature enthusiasts in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, with its lush landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and panoramic views. If you are searching for great scenic points, you came to the right place because Madeira boasts an array of scenic viewpoints offering unparalleled views of the Atlantic, cliffs, and verdant valleys. In this blog post, we will introduce you to our favorite spots we visited, and we are sure you will enjoy them as well. So get your waddle shoes on cause, for some, you have to take a few steps.

Our exploration begins with the iconic Miradouro Pico dos Barcelos, a vantage point that provides breathtaking views of Funchal, the capital city of Madeira. Whether you are staying in Funchal or just passing by, you should take a break here. It is perched on a hill and is easily accessible by car as well as by foot, though we recommend a car. There is a small parking space available for free. As you waddle to the point, you realize it offers a panoramic view of the city, surrounded by mountains and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. If you come in the evening, you can enjoy as the city lights up while the sun sets, creating a magical ambiance.

As you continue your journey, the Miradouro da Ribeira Brava beckons you with its stunning views of the Ribeira Brava valley and the town as such. This viewpoint, perched on the hillside, allows you to appreciate the harmonious blend of the sea and mountains. The picturesque town below adds charm to the scenery, making it a must-visit for those seeking a postcard-perfect view of Madeira.

This charming spot holds an extra special place in our hearts because it was the first viewpoint we got to experience in Madeira. An hour after landing, we stood at this breathtaking spot where the scenery unfolded in a mesmerising dance of lush landscapes with the ocean in the distance. We loved every minute there, knowing Madeira would be epic after this.

As we continued, we stumbled upon Miradouro do Fio. This secluded viewpoint offers a unique perspective on Madeira’s stunning landscapes. It is positioned on a hillside and provides an uninterrupted panorama of lush valleys and rolling hills. Our favorite – dramatic cliffs are very much visible from here. The name “Fio,” Portuguese for “thread,” takes on significance as you feel like they are tracing the delicate thread of nature’s tapestry. Its tranquility and seclusion set it apart, offering a serene retreat away from tourist hotspots.

Moving westward, our next destination was the Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse Viewpoint, next to the Miradouro do Fio. This remote location takes you to the island’s edge, where the rugged cliffs meet the endless sea. The highlight of this spot is the historic lighthouse, which stands proudly against the backdrop of the ocean. The panoramic views from here are simply awe-inspiring, with the vastness of the Atlantic stretching out as far as the eye can see.

This one is located in our favorite spot in Madeira (so far, it is our favorite as we still have lots to discover here). This viewpoint, situated near the Achadas da Cruz cable car station, offers an awe-inspiring panorama of the rugged cliffs, deep valleys, and the boundless Atlantic Ocean. As you gaze from this vantage point, your head might spin, especially considering you will board the cable car soon. But the views down, they stole our hearts. The air is filled with the refreshing scent of the ocean, and the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs enhances the sensory experience. Here, we felt the untamed spirit of the island.

As you continue toward Ponto Moniz, stop at Miradouro da Santinha. This enchanting viewpoint provides an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean with Ponto Moniz in view. The cliffs surrounding Miradouro da Santinha add an element of drama to the scenery. Yes, you probably got it by now – Madeira is pretty dramatic. It’s one of the not-so-frequented spots, meaning you can get a piece of tranquility here.

Let’s get dramatic again with this viewpoint with its unique charm. This viewpoint offers a panoramic spectacle of the rugged coastline, where towering cliffs meet the crashing waves below. What sets Miradouro Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela apart is the presence of striking islets, or “ilheus,” scattered along the shoreline, creating a dramatic and picturesque seascape. These natural rock formations, shaped by centuries of maritime forces, add a touch of mystique to the scene. The panorama transforms into a breathtaking display of light and shadow as the sun casts its golden glow upon the cliffs and islets. The raw, untamed beauty of Miradouro Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela and its unique combination of geological features make it a must-visit.

On the way around the island, you will probably stop at Sexial Beach, but make sure to have a break at Miradouro do Véu da Noiva. This viewpoint unveils an awe-inspiring panorama, showcasing the cascading Véu da Noiva waterfall against lush greenery. Translated as “Veil of the Bride” in Portuguese, this waterfall descends gracefully down the rugged cliffs, creating a mesmerising spectacle that captivates all.

Miradouro de São Cristóvão is yet another iconic vantage point on Madeira, offering unparalleled views. You park your car and waddle to enjoy the lush greenery and our favorite, dramatic cliffs. This was only a short stop for us, but it was worth it.

Miradouro da Beira da Quinta offers a captivating experience for those seeking serenity and breathtaking views. Perched on the edge of the island, this viewpoint showcases the convergence of majestic mountains and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The location’s seclusion adds to its allure, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of Madeira. Miradouro da Beira da Quinta has a nice bench at the top where you can take pictures with a background not everyone has.

At the Miradouro do Guindaste viewpoint, you have a chance to waddle onto one of the glass bridges, which adds to this already unique place. The Atlantic Ocean will seen neverending from here, and we heard a sunset is also worth the visit. Another thing that makes this viewpoint truly distinctive is its vantage point, providing an uninterrupted and awe-inspiring view of the isolated Guindaste Beach below.

Waddle to the almost southeastern coast of Madeira to enjoy this unique vantage point. You will combine this with the waddle on the Vereda da Ponta de São (PR8). It’s a truly unique hike, and it feels like walking on Mars at some point. The unobstructed views stretch as far as the eye can see; the caves and the crashing waves are breathtaking.

These are the top scenic points we recommend, which will take you around the island.

In case you want to go inside the island, we recommend Sunrise at Miradouro do Juncal in Madeira, and then continue your waddle and discover Madeira’s Most Epic Hike

Whatever you decide, Madeira’s scenic points offer a diverse range of experiences, from panoramic city views to rugged coastal cliffs and tranquil mountain landscapes. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the island has something to offer for everyone. We hope you enjoy it while you explore the hidden treasures that make Madeira a true haven for breathtaking views.
