Madeira is renowned not only for its breathtaking landscapes and food but also for its delightful array of food and beverages. Madeira offers a sip of paradise for every palate, from traditional island specialties to globally acclaimed wines. In this blog post, we’ll take you through the four drinks that define Madeira and that locals were happy to pour for us.

Madeira’s drinking culture is deeply rooted in the island’s history, shaped by seafaring, agriculture, and social traditions passed down for generations. The most famous export, Madeira wine, dates back to the Age of Exploration, when fortified wines were developed to survive long sea voyages and unexpectedly improved with heat and movement at sea. Equally iconic is Poncha, a strong local mix of sugarcane rum, honey, and citrus, created by fishermen to warm up and protect against colds. Alcohol in Madeira has never been just about drinking. It is about gathering, storytelling, and celebration. From homemade sugarcane spirits produced after the harvest to wine served at family tables and festivals, Madeira’s drinks reflect island life itself. Simple, bold, and meant to be shared.

Madeira has no shortage of local drinks, but instead of listing everything you could try, we are sharing the ones we actually did and genuinely enjoyed. These are the traditional Madeira drinks locals were happy to pour for us and the ones we kept coming back to during our stay. From strong and warming to smooth and surprisingly refreshing, each drink reflects a different side of island life and its long-standing traditions.

When it comes to beverages, Poncha is the go-to choice for locals and visitors alike. This traditional Madeiran cocktail combines aguardente (a sugarcane spirit), honey, lemon juice, and sugar cane syrup, creating a zesty and refreshing drink that warms the heart and invigorates the soul.

Don’t forget to raise your glass and utter, “À sua saúde!” (To your health!) before taking that first sip. We love that it comes in different flavors, and you can choose your favorite.

Also, a pro tip: do not buy the poncha in supermarkets in plastic bottles. Although they look good, they are not the real poncha. For that, you have to go out to a bar.

For a good Poncha, go to Poncha de São Vicente, which is in the picturesque town of São Vicente. This quaint bar is renowned for its exceptional Poncha, made with the finest local ingredients. Though when in Funchal, we highly recommend Bar Number Two. The prices here are very good, as well as the Poncha.

Madeira is world-famous for its eponymous fortified wine, which has a storied history dating back to the 15th century. What sets Madeira wine apart is its unique aging process, which involves heating the wine for an extended period, resulting in a rich, complex flavor profile. Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or a casual sipper, a visit to a Madeira winery is an absolute must. There are plenty of ones in Funchal to visit. The wine is strong and liqueur-wise, so it might not be for every taste, but still worth the try.

If you’re interested in wine tasting on the island of Madeira, there are several places you can visit. Here are some recommendations:

H.M. Borges is the place we recommend the most. It is located in Funchal and is a family-owned Madeira wine company producing high-quality wines since its establishment in 1877. With over a century of experience, the company has become known for its dedication to traditional winemaking methods and producing exceptional Madeira wines. They make a wide range of Madeira wines, including fortified and vintage varieties. Their portfolio may include wines ranging from dry to sweet, catering to different palates. The overall visit was enjoyable as the lady explained much about the wine, the history, and more.

Among other wine cellars, we recommend the following.

  • Adegas de São Francisco. It is located in Funchal and is a wine cellar offering guided tours and Madeira wine tastings. It provides a historical perspective on the winemaking process.
  • Barbeito Madeira. This is another notable Madeira wine producer, and while their cellars are not always open to the public, you can arrange a visit or tasting by contacting them in advance.
  • D’Oliveira. This is one of the oldest Madeira wine producers, and they have a tasting room in Funchal. They offer a variety of Madeira wines, including some rare and vintage options.
  • Faja dos Padres. This is a unique place to combine wine tasting with stunning views. Faja dos Padres is a vineyard accessible only by boat or cable car. They produce their wine, and you can enjoy tastings while overlooking the ocean.

This sweet cherry liqueur holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors. Ginja, also known as Ginjinha, is a traditional Portuguese liqueur made from sour cherries, sugar, and a hint of cinnamon and other aromatic spices. It’s a delectable combination that strikes a perfect balance between sweet and tart, creating a flavor profile that’s both complex and utterly delightful. This cherished liqueur has deep roots in Portuguese culture, dating back to the 17th century. Originating from the picturesque village of Câmara de Lobos, Ginja is a sweet cherry liqueur that encapsulates the essence of Madeira’s natural bounty. The cherries used in this traditional drink are locally sourced. Ginja was initially crafted for its medicinal properties, believed to aid digestion and boost vitality. One of the best parts is how you drink Ginja, the traditional manner, that is. It’s common to enjoy a shot of Ginja in a small, edible chocolate cup, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

If we had to choose, then this is our favorite one. Originating in the heart of Funchal, Nikita is a popular choice among locals and visitors alike.

Its simple yet tantalizing recipe combines vanilla ice cream, pineapple, and beer, resulting in a creamy, fizzy, and utterly satisfying beverage.

The marriage of creamy sweetness with the slight bitterness of beer creates a harmonious, magical balance. Its tropical notes transport you to the sunny shores of this Atlantic paradise.

Trying green wine, also known as “Vinho Verde,” on Madeira is an experience that can enhance your visit. And it’s a wine that you can’t get anywhere else. Madeira’s climate and soil conditions offer a unique environment for grape cultivation. This leads to a distinct variation of Vinho Verde that showcases the island’s terroir, resulting in a wine with its special character. Vinho Verde is renowned for its refreshing and crisp nature. The light effervescence, low alcohol content, and vibrant acidity make it an ideal choice for warm days. We loved every sip of it. It became our favorite one.

Coral beer is Madeira’s very own brewery, known for crafting exceptional beers that cater to a wide range of tastes. From the classic Coral Lager to the robust Coral Stout, there’s a brew for every beer enthusiast. Coral beer is a staple in Madeiran culture and is often enjoyed in the company of friends and family, adding to the island’s convivial atmosphere.

To get some good Coral visit, Cervejaria União. Situated in the heart of Funchal, this brewery offers a range of Coral beers, allowing you to taste the diverse flavors of Madeira’s very own brew.

We hope your exploration of the beverages of Madeira will be a journey into the heart of this vibrant island. From the world-famous Madeira wine to the invigorating Poncha and the tropical delight of Nikita, each sip offers a taste of the island’s unique culture and heritage.

So, raise your glass and cheers to the drinks of Madeira!
