Fortress Hohensalzburg towers over Salzburg as one of the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe, and its history stretches back to 1077 when it was built to protect the city’s powerful archbishops. One interesting fact: the fortress houses one of the world’s oldest working funicular railways, first powered by prisoners and later by horses before becoming electric. As you waddle through the courtyards, lookout towers, and museum rooms filled with centuries of stories, keep your eyes open — somewhere within the fortress grounds, we left a small penguin stone waiting to be discovered by the next curious traveler. Go to see the beautiful views of Salzburg, and inside the wall hides a penguin stone.
