Official Penguin Rating

If you’re planning a trip to the Faroe Islands and want a place to stay that balances comfort, location, and price, this apartment with a balcony and ocean view in Tórshavn might be just what you’re looking for. Finding well-priced accommodation in the Faroe Islands can be tricky, but this apartment strikes a rare middle ground: modern, spacious, and close to the heart of the capital, without the steep price tag of hotels. From the private balcony overlooking the Atlantic to the fully equipped kitchen and light-filled living space, it’s designed for travelers who want both convenience and a sense of home. Whether you’re here to explore rugged coastlines, dive into local culture, or relax with a view, this apartment makes a smart and stylish base for couples, families, or small groups.
This apartment is part of a modern residential building in Tórshavn, designed to maximize its elevated position. While it doesn’t carry centuries of history like the turf-roofed houses in the Old Town, it offers something just as rare in the Faroe Islands: a thoughtfully built stay with panoramic sea views at a fair price. It has quickly become a favorite among travelers who want the comfort of a private home paired with an unbeatable location close to Tórshavn’s cafés, shops, and cultural spots.
Location and Accessibility
📍 Adress: 63 Undir Gráasteini, 1st floor, 100 Tórshavn, Faroe Islands
When we were planning our trip, we honestly weren’t sure if it made sense to split our stay—maybe a couple of nights on Vágar Island, then move somewhere else for a few days. But in the end, we decided to base ourselves in Tórshavn, and it turned out to be the best choice. From here, nothing felt out of reach. Almost every highlight was within a 45–50 minute drive by car, which made exploring much easier without the hassle of packing up and moving around.
The apartment is at 63 Undir Gráasteini (1st floor), 100 Tórshavn, in a quiet spot that still keeps you close to everything. We could wander into the city center to see Tinganes and Skansin, grab dinner at one of Tórshavn’s cozy restaurants, or even take a dip at Sandagerð Beach, just over a kilometer away. Having this as our base for the whole week gave us the freedom to explore the Faroe Islands at our own pace, while always coming back “home” to the ocean view from our balcony.
Easy Parking Right at the Apartment
Since exploring the Faroe Islands really requires a rental car, we paid close attention to parking when booking. At this apartment, it couldn’t have been easier. There’s a small gravel (stone-paved) parking area right in front of the house, just a few steps from the entrance. We never had to worry about finding a spot; there was always space for one car, and even two could fit comfortably if needed. Having that convenience after long days of driving around the islands made a big difference.
Apartment Surroundings
- Shops & Essentials. Just a short waddle from the apartment, you’ll find a Bónus supermarket, the go-to spot in the Faroe Islands for affordable groceries and daily essentials. It’s perfect for stocking up on snacks, breakfast items, or ingredients if you’d like to cook in the apartment’s kitchen. You’ll also find other small shops and bakeries in Tórshavn, plus the larger SMS Shopping Centre, only a few minutes’ drive away if you need a wider variety.
- Dining Options. Tórshavn offers a variety of excellent dining options nearby. From fresh Faroese seafood and lamb dishes in the Old Town to international possibilities like sushi, Italian, or casual pizza, you’ll find something for every taste. Many restaurants are within a short drive or walk, so you can enjoy a glass of wine without worrying about parking far from home. Thought we mostly cooked in the apartment.
- Exploring & Activities. Staying here puts you right at the heart of the Faroe Islands. Within Tórshavn, you can wander through Tinganes, visit the Skansin fortress, or enjoy the harbor atmosphere. As a base for day trips, it couldn’t be better: most sights, villages, and hikes are within a 45–50 minute drive, meaning you can see a different part of the islands each day and still return to your ocean-view balcony in the evening.

Check-In Experience
Since this is an apartment rather than a hotel, there’s no reception desk waiting for you. Instead, you receive a door code and a detailed message with instructions on how to collect your key from a lockbox. And when we say thorough, we mean detailed. Before arrival, we got a super long message that felt a bit like starting a secret mission, complete with step-by-step directions:
How to open the keybox:
-
-
- Inspect the key box: locate the dials with numbers on the front.
- Prepare the dials: make sure they’re in the middle position.
- Enter the combination: rotate each dial to the correct numbers.
- Verify the combination: double-check that you have it right.
- Push down the lever: it’s on the left-hand side—press firmly but gently.
- Pull the shutter: keep the lever down and slide the shutter open.
- Retrieve the key: take out the key you need for the apartment.
- Close the shutter by pushing it back until it latches securely.
-
Once you’ve cracked the code (literally), you’re in. While it felt a bit overwhelming at first, the process worked smoothly, and in the end, it actually added a fun little adventure twist to our arrival.
Rooms and Amenities
The apartment makes you feel like a comfortable home base after long days of exploring. Inside, you’ll find a bright living area with large windows and direct access to the balcony, a fully equipped kitchen for cooking your own meals, and a cozy dining space. There are two bedrooms, one bigger and the second smaller, and each can accommodate two people. The bedroom features a comfortable bed with fresh linens, while the modern bathroom is equipped with a shower and all the essentials you’ll need. Free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and heating add extra convenience, making the apartment suitable for both short stays and week-long adventures. And of course, the highlight is the private balcony where you can relax with a cup of coffee while taking in views of the Atlantic.

Bedrooms & Living Space
As you step inside the apartment, you’re welcomed by a small foyer where you can hang your jackets and leave your shoes behind. From there, you walk into a hallway that is surprisingly spacious. This area has everything you need for a more extended stay: a washing machine with a built-in dryer, a large wardrobe, and storage space for luggage, plus a big bookshelf filled with books and table games—perfect for a relaxed evening indoors.
The first bedroom is the larger of the two. It features a comfortable double bed, a TV for unwinding after a day of exploring, and a spacious wardrobe where you can neatly store your clothes and travel essentials. Right next door, the second bedroom is smaller but just as practical. It features two separate single beds, ideal for friends, children, or extra guests, along with a smaller wardrobe for belongings. Together, these rooms make the apartment well-suited for both couples and families.
Both bedrooms were prepared with fresh linen and a full set of towels, which was a really lovely touch. The only downside we found—and this is purely a matter of personal preference—was that the mattresses on all the beds were a little too soft for our liking.

Bathroom
The bathroom was a pleasant surprise; spacious, well-equipped, and designed with comfort in mind. It features both a bathtub and a shower, allowing you to choose between soaking and refreshing after a day of exploring. One of the best touches was the heated floor, which felt amazing after returning from a long hike. There was also plenty of counter and shelf space to leave toiletries and personal items, something we don’t often find in other apartments, and we really appreciated here. To top it off, the bathroom came with complimentary essentials like shower gel, conditioner, and hair products, making it easy to settle in without rushing to the store for basics. The bathroom also includes a hairdryer, and there were also washing machine detergent, so we didn’t have to worry about buying a big pack just for a short stay. That made it really convenient to do laundry mid-week.

Kitchen & Living Room Harmony
The heart of this apartment—the kitchen and living room—is beautifully organized with a sleek, Hygge-inspired design that emphasizes warmth and comfort. It’s a huge, open-plan space that strikes a perfect balance between style and function.
In the kitchen area, you’ll find everything you need for everyday cooking and more:
- Fully equipped kitchen with a stove, oven, and microwave
- Refrigerator and dishwasher
- Small appliances, including a coffee machine, toaster, and kettle
- Complete kitchenware, plates, glasses, and utensils
The setup ensures you can easily brew a hot coffee or prepare a homemade dinner, making it especially cozy and practical.
The living room seamlessly flows from the kitchen, creating an inviting social hub:
- A spacious dining table seating up to eight people, perfect for family meals or board games
- A comfortable couch, coffee table, and a flat-screen TV, ideal for relaxing after hiking or exploring the islands.
- Plenty of room to move around, giving everyone space to spread out and unwind.

Balcony & Ocean View
One of the perks of this apartment is, of course, the balcony with an ocean view. It’s spacious enough to enjoy your morning coffee or unwind in the evening while gazing out over the Atlantic. That said, this is the Faroe Islands—we joked that we were “paying for the ocean view,” but most of the time the view was a wall of fog! Out of our seven days here, we actually saw the sea clearly only about four times. When it did appear, though, it felt extra magical—like a reward for being patient with Faroese weather. But as fast as it came, it also disappeared behind a fog wall. So don’t expect much from the “ocean view”.

Confusion Over Waste Sorting
We genuinely wanted to recycle and do our part, but honestly, navigating the waste sorting system in the Faroe Islands felt like trying to solve a riddle. There were no clear instructions in the apartment, and we weren’t sure which bin was for what. It turns out that the Faroe Islands’ waste system is somewhat complex: only about one-third of household and industrial waste is actually sorted for recycling. Each municipality handles things differently. Tórshavn has its own system via Kommunala Brennistøðin, while other islands fall under IRF, which sorts waste into specialized bags or bins for items such as paper, cardboard, hazardous materials, and plastics.
So, unless you’re already familiar with the system or drive your waste to drop-off points, it can be unclear. A little signage or instructions would have been really helpful—especially since most of our stay was spent not knowing where to dispose of things.
Value for Money
For our 8-day, 7-night stay (24.8–1.9) in the apartment we paid a total of €1,484.04. At first glance, that might seem high, but since we were traveling as a group of four, it worked out to a very fair price per person. Split between four people, the spacious layout, with two bedrooms, a large living area, a full kitchen, and private parking, made it an excellent value.
For couples, the cost per night might feel a bit steep compared to smaller options. Still, considering the central location in Tórshavn, the ocean-view balcony, and all the amenities (like the washer/dryer, fully equipped kitchen, and heated bathroom floor), we’d say it’s a good value for money. You really get the comfort of a home base with the flexibility to cook, do laundry, and relax in a roomy living space, something that’s hard to find in the Faroe Islands at this level.
In short: fantastic value if you’re sharing the cost as a group or family, and still a solid choice for couples who want convenience, comfort, and location all in one.
Verdict
★★★★☆
All in all, the apartment in Tórshavn turned out to be a fantastic base for our week in the Faroe Islands. The location made exploring easy; everything was within a 45–50 minute drive, while the apartment itself offered the space and comfort we needed after long days outdoors. We especially appreciated the fully equipped kitchen, the spacious living and dining area, and the thoughtful extras, such as board games, books, and heated bathroom floors. The fresh linens and towels added a welcoming touch, though the mattresses were a bit too soft for our taste.
Yes, the “ocean view” sometimes meant staring at a thick wall of fog, but when the sea did appear, it was absolutely worth it. Combined with convenient parking, easy check-in, and a fair price (especially when shared as a group), this apartment strikes a rare balance of comfort, location, and value in a destination where good accommodation can be both hard to find and expensive.
In short: a smart, cozy, and well-located choice for anyone wanting a home-like stay in Tórshavn.
