We continued our waddle to explore the lakes, and our next stop was Schwarzensee, located on the Tauplitzalm plateau. It is a serene alpine lake renowned for its striking dark waters, which give the lake its name, Schwarzensee, meaning “Black Lake.” At an elevation of around 1,500 meters, this small yet enchanting lake covers an area of approximately 4 hectares and reaches a depth of up to 8 meters. Surrounded by lush meadows and dramatic limestone peaks, it’s a favorite spot for hikers and nature lovers exploring the expansive Tauplitzalm, one of Europe’s largest high alpine pastures. According to local legend, the lake is said to be bottomless and home to a mystical water spirit who guards its peaceful stillness, only appearing to those pure of heart. On misty mornings, locals claim you can hear whispers echoing across the water, adding an air of mystery to this already magical spot. Of course, we had to leave a penguin stone behind. You can find it at the rest place/viewpoint with a wooden bench. It is behind the wooden bench in the tree trunk, and you can reach it even when sitting down on the bench.
