Best Places to Eat in Tallinn

If you’re planning a trip to Tallinn, the charming capital city of Estonia, you’re in for a treat. Not only is Tallinn full of history and culture, but it’s also home to some delicious and unique cuisine. From traditional Estonian dishes to international flavors, there’s something for everyone in Tallinn. You can find many restaurants here, and it can be overwhelming to decide where to eat. That’s why we write about the ones we visited and why you should do so as well. So whether you’re a foodie or just looking to try something new, read our recommendations on where to eat when in Tallinn.

First, what surprised us was the about of beer houses and chocolate places here. Behind each corner was a shop with handmade chocolate. We knew right away we were in the right city. So, let’s start on our restaurant journey.

Beer House

With so many beer houses around, we had to try one out. We visited the Beer House, which is the main one here. It is close to the main square, and you can waddle there. Already when entering the deco will make you smile.
We came early after they opened because the place was almost empty. It is vast, and they even have a space to put your coats away. We can only imagine how it looks when packed. It must be fun.

Many tables were reserved, but a waitress found one for us. The menus were available on the tables, but we more or less knew what we wanted. We read the menus outside of the restaurant and decided. You can find many crafted beers and food accompanying them.

We tried all the dark beers and highly recommended them. All of them. For food, we choose a bratwurst with sauerkraut, which is not sour but sweet. It surprised us but in a good way. We also had a crispy chicken with the crispiest coat we ever had. If you can’t decide what to get, get the chicken.

Olde Hansa

As you might know, Tallinn is a medieval city; therefore, we also tried out a medieval restaurant. This one is a charming place; they are also very active outside. Next to the restaurant, they have a stand selling local goodies, and they even have musicians playing our front. The restaurant is called Olde Hansa. It is famous worldwide as the most authentic medieval dining experience ever. And we can confirm it. You are taken back to the middle ages from the moment you step in. The interior is authentic, and the servers also wear traditional clothing. They gave us a beautiful table, and the whole time they addressed us as “Lady” and “Lord.” Also, “Little Lord.” 😅

We had a couple of beers, and it took us a while to decide what to eat because the menu was hard to read due to its authenticity 😅. We then decided on having lamb. The food was delicious and was perfect for the atmosphere.
In the end, when we paid, our server asked us whether we would pay with gold or witchcraft. We decided on the latter and paid by card.
If you had to choose one restaurant to visit in Tallinn, choose this one.

CRU Restaurant

The next one we recommend is if you prefer a little more fine dining. It is called CRU Restaurant, and you can find it near Viru Gate, just a waddle away. Before we enter, let us say the restaurant is part of the Michelin Guide

Address: Viru tänav 8, 10140 Tallinn

The overall atmosphere is lovely inside. Note they have a policy: you must take off your coat and leave it in the coat area.
We will go right to the food. Amazing. For starters, we had tartar and tuna. The flavors and texture are amazing. We had duck and fish as the main dishes, and it was simply out of this world. The duck was medium rare and tasted like heaven. And, of course, we had desserts – chocolate and cheesecake. They need no further commentary, as we will remember them for a while.

Apart from restaurants, there are a few other places we would like to recommend.

This local bakery, Pulla Bakery, is very charming to sit in and even better if you are searching for desserts.

Then not far from it, in the same alley, is the Bear Farm Chocolate place. They sell handmade chocolate, which is simply delicious. They also have a small area to sit down and chill. The smell of chocolate there is like at the Willy Wonka Factory.

Don’t forget to visit as well the Balti Jaam Market. It is the local market where you can get the most delicious food. We tried these filled pastry pockets, which come in sweet as well as salty versions. They are delicious. But there is much more food you can find here.

In case you do not have time to grab a medieval dinner or lunch, you can still experience the medieval atmosphere at III Drakon. A medieval-style tavern right inside the Town Hall of Tallinn. The service is very authentic.

Address: Raekoja Plats, 10146 Tallinn

And lastly, we also visited the oldest cafe in Estonia – Maiasmokk. In its current form, it dates back to 1864. Honestly, we visited because of this reason. And they had cakes and chocolate being sold, but it is a lot about the buss. It was nice, but there are better places to have a cake and coffee. This was too busy, and we barely didn’t have a place to sit at.

Well, these are our recommendations, and we hope you have a lovely time in Tallinn and try all their delicious food.
