Restaurants worth visiting when in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is filled with restaurants in each alley and on each street. Sometimes it is hard to choose where to eat and what to order. We tried some of them and here are our recommendations.

Dubrovnik

Our top 3 picks

Lady Pi-Pi

Lady Pi-Pi will catch your eye at first due to its name, and because it’s famous to go there for dinner, however, we went for lunch.
Beware, first, you have to waddle up the stairs as it’s located beneath the old walls, but it is totally worth it. They have an interesting statue in front of the restaurant, representing the name.

It has definitely the best view in all of Dubrovnik.

It is very inviting, seating outside on the terrace with a view that also people who weren’t eating came in and took pictures.

It is the only place in Dubrovnik’s old town, which is permitted to have an outside grill.

The waitress was very nice and also gave us some recommendations. We ordered seafood, as this is what you should get when in Croatia.

To be more precise we ordered the Seafood platter for two, which was more food in the end than we expected. We also had a fresh salad with it. The platter for two is a great choice if you want to try various seafood, not just the catch of the day.

They grilled it to perfection and we even watched as they did so. It consists of a tuna steak, tiger shrimps, fish fillets, mussels, squit, and grilled vegetables. The flavor was great, mixed nicely with the seasoning and grilling.

One more tip, in case you plan to go for dinner make sure to make a reservation as they are always full. Although the Facebook page says no reservation, the waitress told us they are full during dinner time and it’s best to have a reservation.

Konoba Kenova

Konoba Kenova is quite new on the scene, but has a great location. Instead of being inside the old town, they are located just outside the walls (Ploče Gate) with a view of the walls. It is something different again than sitting in one of the beautiful alleys.

The name has also an interesting story. Kenova is a local word meaning “whats new”.

We enjoyed the location very much and visited Kenova for dinner time. We were lucky to get a table, they were quite a few reservations on the others.

The seating arrangement is also among the interesting things, as they are located on the stairs, meaning no matter at which table you sit you will have an amazing view. Feels like in a cinema with much better food.

Our recommendation is for dinner as you can enjoy the sunset and the lighting up of Dubrovnik, while you are still close to the old town and can have drinks later.

As we liked it there so much, we ordered also more than one dish. Starting with the prawn bisque with herbal focaccia crostini, it was delicious although a little salty, we continued with homemade gnocchi and homemade ravioli with prawn filling and brown butter, and it was heaven for our taste buds.

Of course, local wine couldn’t be missing, and ordered a bottle of red wine.

And what would be a good dinner without finishing it with dessert?

We had the cake of the day, which was a chocolate one and milles feuilles . Both divine.

Although not long on the scene, they know what they are doing.

The waiter was very friendly and we talked a lot with him, although in the end, it took him a little longer to bring us the check, it didn’t bother us as much as the view in front of us was beautiful.
If you are looking for a great place for dinner in Dubrovnik, this is the right choice.

Taj Mahal

Don’t get fooled by the name – we are not recommending an Indian restaurant, but an authentic Bosnian one. Although the name can be a little confusing.

Taj Mahal is located in the old town in one of the beautiful alleys and can be easily overlooked as other restaurants and a pizzeria is located in the same alley.

Bosnian cuisine makes use of many spices in moderate quantities. Dishes are often boiled and flavored with sauces made from the natural juices of vegetables.

And it is among the ones not really for vegetarians or vegans as it is full of meat.

We went toTaj Mahal for lunch and thank the gods we did, cause we digested the food for a few hours. So when planning your visit keep in mind your digestion. However, if you plan a night out, then it is perfect.

Wanting to try as much from the menu as possible, we ordered the “Ghingis Kan” Plate.

It is a plate for two, with all kinds of meat (čevapi, chicken kebab, pljeskavica, sudukica, rump steak, chicken).

And as mentioned, prepare for a lot of meat. If you ask us, it was for more than two people.

All was prepared on the grill and tasted amazing. The flavoring was great and we enjoyed each bite. We barely finished it, but didn’t want to leave behind anything.

The service was nice and the waitress gave us recommendations for a few dishes from which one we ordered.
The taste great, and it is among our top three recommendations.

Peppino’s Gelato Garden

Waddling around Dubrovnik, you will notice it is filled with ice cream shops, and each looks as delicious as the other.

However, we recommend Peppino’s Gelato Garden, located near Ploče Gate.  Note there is another one in Dubrovnik, Peppino’s Gelato Factory, the first one has a different kind of magic around it.

The interior is beautiful, and from the cobble stone street and high walls, you will be transformed into a garden with delicious ice cream.

What we appreciated most was that they have non-diary ice (vegan) creams as well, which tasted heavenly. And they scoop up quite a lot! Only had one scoop, but felt like we have two. It is rare to have really good vegan ice cream, but they did it.
