Alghero surprised us in the best possible way with its food. With restaurants on almost every corner, choosing where to sit down was honestly the most challenging part of the day. Instead of guessing, we did what we love most while traveling. We asked locals for their go-to spots and mixed their tips with places we personally tried along the way. The result is this list of restaurants we genuinely enjoyed and would happily return to.

When visiting Alghero, come hungry. The city is a dream for food lovers, especially if you enjoy seafood, fresh ingredients, and simple Sardinian flavors done right. See which restaurants we recommend.

Know Before You Go: Coperto

When dining out in Alghero and across Italy, you might notice an extra line on your bill called coperto. This is a standard, fixed cover charge per person, usually starting from around 2€, and it covers things like the table setting and often the bread served at the start of the meal. It is not a tip, and it is not optional if it is listed on the menu. On the flip side, if coperto does not appear on your bill or menu, you are not required to pay anything beyond the total shown. It is simply part of the local dining culture and one of those small details worth knowing before you sit down to eat.

Restaurants We Tried in Alghero, Sardinia

Ristorante Nautilus Alghero

📍 Address:  Forte della Maddalenetta, 4, 07041 Alghero SS, Italy

Ristorante Nautilus Alghero is one of those places we really wanted to try for ourselves after seeing it recommended again and again, and it did not disappoint. Sitting right by the harbor, the location alone already sets the mood, but it is the food and service that truly make it special. We came for dinner to catch the sunset, and honestly, watching the sky change colors while our dishes arrived was one of those travel moments you want to pause. It is a bit fancier than most spots around, and the menu focuses mainly on fresh seafood. Not cheap, but absolutely worth it. Locals dine here too, which is always a good sign, and if you are traveling as a couple, this is a beautiful choice for a romantic evening. The terrace is charming, especially if you manage to reserve a sea-view table.

We ordered the tuna in a sesame crust with baked potatoes on the side, cooked just right and full of flavor, and the trofie pasta with smoked mullet, yellow datterino tomatoes, fennel, and pine nuts. The pasta tasted heavenly, and the smoked fish was subtle and perfectly balanced. For dessert, we tried the traditional Sebadas, which ended up being our favorite part of the meal, and we are definitely dessert people. One detail we found fascinating was seeing a waiter bring out a whole lobster for another table to approve before cooking it, something you do not see every day. If you enjoy dry red wine, we highly recommend ordering the local Monica from their wine list. While it might look like a touristy spot at first glance, it truly is not. The quality of the food and the attentive yet friendly service make it stand out. Just make sure to book in advance if you want that sunset sea view; their communication is quick and smooth.

Al Vecchio Mulino

📍 Address: Via Don Deroma, 3, 07041 Alghero SS, Italy

This was hands down one of our favorite food stops in Alghero and easily the best pizza we had in town. Al Vecchio Mulino is a small, family-run pizzeria tucked into the historic center, and it truly feels like a local secret. For dinner, a reservation is highly recommended. We got lucky by arriving right at opening time and managed to grab one of the last free tables. During the evening, we watched several people without reservations sadly turn away once the place filled up. Inside, you can see the pizza master in action, tossing the dough and sliding pizzas straight into the stone oven, which already tells you you are in the right place. The pizzas were absolutely incredible, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor, and we had no problem finishing every last bite. Prices are another win, with pizzas starting from just 6.50 €, which feels almost unreal for the quality. We came here on a local recommendation and would 100 percent recommend it ourselves. Not just one of the best pizzerias in Alghero, but one of the best we have tried in Sardinia. The best pizza in town! No kidding!

Porky’s Burger Express

📍 Address: N/A

We ended up at Porky’s Burger Express purely out of hunger, and while it filled a gap, it was probably our least favorite food stop in Alghero. As it turns out, not every pizza in Italy is a guaranteed winner, and this one just didn’t do it for us. Maybe that should have been our first clue. Sitting down for pizza in a burger place is always a bit of a gamble 😅. The location itself is nice, especially being close to Lido Beach, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed and pleasant for a casual meal.

As for the pizza, it was okay but far from memorable. The flavor was fine, but cutting it was a real struggle. The dough was extremely thin in the middle, almost watery, and it made eating it more of a fight than a pleasure. That said, we did discover something interesting here. They offer a special pizza menu, including a pizza topped with French fries. At first, we thought this was just their quirky twist, but we later noticed that pizza with fries on top pops up all over Alghero. Definitely a local favorite and a fun cultural food surprise. Would we rush back here for pizza? Probably not. But if you are curious about unusual toppings or just want a casual spot near the beach, it might still be worth forming your own opinion. As of 2025, not sure whether the pizzeria is still open.

Azzurra Gelateria

📍 Address: Via Roma, 36, 07041 Alghero SS, Italy

It would not really be a trip to Italy without gelato, and Azzurra Gelateria turned out to be one of those happy, unplanned discoveries. This time, we skipped the deep dive into reviews and followed our instinct, stepping into the first gelateria that caught our eye along the way. And honestly, it paid off. What immediately won us over was the impressive selection of vegan flavors, which you don’t always find so easily, even in Italy. The variety was great, the staff was friendly and patient, and the whole place had a relaxed, welcoming vibe. We tried both vegan and non-vegan gelato, and both were excellent, creamy, flavorful, and clearly made with care. If you are vegan, this spot is an absolute win, but even if you are not, Azzurra is well worth a stop for a refreshing gelato break while exploring Alghero.

Other gelaterias that came highly recommended by locals, but that we did not get around to trying this time, include Alghero Gelateria Oops, Gelateria K2, Gelateria Artigianale 9 3/4, and ReGelato. If you have more time (and stomach space), these are all worth adding to your Alghero gelato crawl.

Other Local Restaurant Recommendations

Although we did not manage to try these places ourselves this time, we would not hesitate to visit any of them, and they are already on our list for the next time we are in Alghero.

  • Gioia Mia. A perfect spot for a quick lunch. Their crostini are freshly prepared and topped with high-quality ingredients, simple, fresh, and very satisfying.
  • Prosciutteria Sant Miquel. Ideal for a fast and flavorful bite. Expect a great selection of salami, prosciutto, cheeses, and wines, perfect for grazing Italian style.
  • Bar Focacceria Milese. Located close to the Via Catalogna bus stop, this is a budget-friendly option for a quick lunch. Very informal, very local, and seriously tasty.
  • Ristorante The Kings. Great outdoor seating and excellent food with a strong focus on fish and seafood. Plenty of raw dishes to try, all made with very fresh ingredients.
  • Trattoria Lo Romanì. A cozy spot serving seafood, pasta, and plates meant for sharing, finished off nicely with drinks and dessert.
  • Ristorante La Cullera. Close to where we stayed and a place that truly made us feel welcome. The staff treats you like family, the seafood is excellent, and they also offer vegetarian and vegan options.

Alghero completely won us over with its food, and even after all the eating we did, it still feels like we only scratched the surface. Between local recommendations, spontaneous stops, and places we bookmarked for next time, this city clearly deserves more than one visit. There are still so many restaurants we did not get to try, and honestly, that alone is a very good reason to return. So yes, we will be back, hungry, curious, and ready to continue our Alghero food adventure one plate at a time.

Pack your bags, prepare your taste buns, and enjoy Alghero!
