Alghero is filled with restaurants at each corner and sometimes it’s hard to choose which one to sit down and try out. We asked the locals for the best restaurants and tried out as well some of them ourselves and here are the ones to try.
When visiting Alghero be prepared to try out a lot of delicious food, especially seafood.
Coperto
Note that many restaurants in Italy charge a so-called “coperto” which is essentially a flat, fixed cover charge on a person starting at 2 €. This is for the table setting and the bread usually. If this didn’t appear on your bill then you are not required to pay anything more than what’s printed on your bill.
Ristorante Nautilus Alghero
In a great location overlooking the harbor, you will find great quality seafood and professional yet friendly service. Not cheap, but worth it. Locals pick it as well frequently, and if you are traveling in two, it’s the perfect place to have a romantic dinner, as they have a terrasse where you can eat and enjoy the sun settling down.
We dined in Nautilus for dinner to enjoy the beautiful sunset with our food and it was worth it.
The restaurant is highly recommended on the internet and so we wanted to try it to see for ourselves. It’s a little bit fancier, as some would call it and on the menu, it’s mostly seafood, but all fresh.
We had the tuna covered in sesame seeds (Cubo di tonno rosso in crosta di sesamo, barbabietola, misticanza estiva e salsa agro) with baked potatoes on the side and pasta with smoked fish (Trofie con muggine affumicato, datterino giallo confit, finocchietto e pinoli). The tuna well done and covered in a crust made of sezame. The pasta tasted heavenly and you can’t even taste the smoked fish.
It might seem like a so-called tourist trap, but it’s not. The food top, as well as the service, but for some, the prices might be a little high, but totally worth it.
We also had there the traditional dish called Sebadas, and it was the best part (but we like sweets the most).
Apart from the great food, it was interesting to see the people around us who ordered a lobster and the waiter brought it for them to access before they agreed. Something one does not see often.
Last tip if you are a red wine lover and like the wine dry, get the local wine called Monica from their wine card.
Don’t forget to reserve a table upfront if you want to have a beautiful sea view. They are very prompt in their communication.
Al Vecchio Mulino
The best pizza in town! No kidding! Located in the historic center, it’s a small family-owned business where for the dinner you need a reservation if you want to get a table. although we didn’t have one, we came there when they opened and they had one of two tables still available, but we saw during the evening as people without a reservation came and went away because there was no place for them.
The pizzas are prepared and you can see the pizza master throwing the dough and then putting it into the stone oven.
Taste wise they are incredible and we ate it all. Also, the prices are great starting at 6.50 € for a pizza.
We went to the pizza place also on a recommendation from the locals and it was worth it and you should go as well.

Azzurra Gelateria
It wouldn’t really be a visit to Italy if we didn’t have gelato. Sometimes you look for the best gelato among the best, but once in a time it’s also good not to look too much into reviews and that’s what we did this time. Not really looking at any reviews we stepped into the first one on our way and it was worth it.
Azzurra already pleased us when we saw the big selection of vegan flavors at their disposal. They had a lot of flavors and the service was very nice. We had a vegan as well as a nonvegan one and it’s worth going there for both, but especially if you are looking for vegan ones.
From other gelaterias that the locals recommended us are Alghero Gelateria Oops, Gelateria K2, Gelateria artigianale 9 3/4 and ReGelato.
Among other recommendations, we have from locals are
Although we didn’t manage to try it ourselves we would not hesitate to go to any of these restaurants and plan to do so next time in Alghero.
- Gioia Mia perfect spot for a quick lunch. The crostini are freshly prepared with high-quality ingredients.
- Prosciutteria Sant Miquel.Great for something quick to eat, it offers a great selection of salami, prosciutti, cheese, and wines.
- Bar Focacceria Milese. Close to the bus stop Via Catalogna. A budget-friendly place for a quick lunch. Very informal, and totally yummy.
- Ristorante The Kings. Great outside seating and delicious food. Strong focus on fish and seafood, with lots of raw dishes to try – and only the freshest ingredients are used.
- Trattoria Lo Romanì. Cozy restaurant featuring seafood, pasta & shared plates, plus drinks & dessert.
- Ristorante La Cullera. Close to where we live. Offers vegetarian and vegan options as well. The staff is very friendly and treats you like family. Lots of great seafood.
Porky’s Burger Express
This place we ended up in because of hunger, but do not highly recommend it as not every pizza is excellent in Italy, and this one we didn’t like as much, but maybe it was due to the fact we sat in a burger place. 😅
They are located close to Libo beach and the overall sitting there nice. Talking about the pizza, it wasn’t the best. The taste was fine, but it was very hard to cut it, almost impossible. It was a real fight! The dough was very thin in the middle and it was quite watery.
However, we learned they have a specials category for pizzas which includes also a pizza with french fries on top. First, we thought it was only served in the establishment we were in, but saw it throughout Alghero they serve pizza with fries on top. What do you think about such a topping?
