This waddle was our last one while we explored Switzerland for a week, and we thought nothing could surprise us anymore; Oeschinensee did know the sock of our feet. The Oeschinen Lake hike is one of Switzerland’s most breathtaking alpine hikes for all kinds of hikers. Here’s everything you need to know to enjoy the hike to Oeschinen Lake, from the cable car ride to where to park.

To get to the hike, you must first go to Kandersteg. Getting from Interlaken to Kandersteg is easy and convenient, with several transportation options to suit different preferences. The most popular way is by train, where you can enjoy a scenic 45-minute journey through the Swiss countryside. Alternatively, you can drive if you prefer a more direct route or travel with luggage. The drive takes around 30 minutes and takes you along well-maintained roads, providing flexibility in your travel plans. And if you prefer a more leisurely pace, taking a bus is another option, with regular services connecting Interlaken to Kandersteg.

When visiting Kandersteg for the Oeschinen Lake hike, parking is convenient and easily accessible. The main parking lot is next to the Oeschinen cable car station, making it the perfect spot to park your car before starting your adventure. This parking area is spacious and just a short walk to the cable car. Arriving early is recommended during peak seasons as the lot can fill up quickly. If the main lot is full, additional parking areas are nearby, but the one next to the cable car station is the most convenient for hikers. We parked here for about four hours and paid 7.94 CHF. And we used the app EasyPark.

It’s a short waddle from the parking lot to the cable car station, the gateway to one of Switzerland’s most scenic hikes. The cable car operates daily from early spring through late autumn, with hours typically running from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, though times may vary depending on the season. It’s advisable to check the schedule beforehand, especially during winter or holidays. See here – link.

Tickets for the cable car can be purchased at the station or online , with single or round-trip fare options. Prices are reasonable, with discounts available for children, seniors, and groups. We bought a round ticket, which cost us 164 CHF for two adults. Penguins do not pay anything.

As with every cable car ride in Switzerland, this ride is also an experience, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Expect a smooth and quick ascent as the cable car climbs steeply, giving you a taste of the beauty that awaits at the top.

The Oeschinensee gondola ride is a magical start to your adventure, offering a swift and scenic ascent from Kandersteg to the trailhead above. As the gondola glides upwards, you’re treated to breathtaking views of lush green meadows, charming Swiss chalets, and the majestic peaks of the Bernese Alps. On clear days, the panoramic vistas from the gondola are nothing short of spectacular, setting the tone for the natural wonders you’ll encounter on the hike.

The ride takes about 10 minutes and provides a comfortable and efficient way to skip the steepest part of the climb, making it accessible for hikers of all fitness levels. The gondola takes you from the valley station in Kandersteg, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,200 meters (3,937 feet), up to the mountain station near the Oeschinensee trailhead, which is at an elevation of around 1,682 meters (5,518 feet). This means the gondola ascends roughly 482 meters (1,581 feet).

The hike around Oeschinen Lake is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make to soak in the stunning scenery. The trail loops around the lake, offering diverse perspectives of its crystal-clear waters and the surrounding alpine peaks. While the route is moderately challenging in some sections, with occasional steep or rocky areas, it is generally accessible for most hikers.

Absolutely yes! Oeschinensee, often called the “pearl of the Alps,” is a must-visit destination. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, surrounded by towering alpine peaks, create a picture-perfect setting that feels almost otherworldly.

The Oeschinensee Panorama hike is a high-altitude trail with an elevation ranging between 1,600 to 1,800 meters (5,250 to 5,900 feet) above sea level. Starting from the upper station of the Oeschinen cable car, the trail provides breathtaking views of the surrounding Bernese Alps, including towering peaks like Blüemlisalp and Doldenhorn. Despite the altitude, the hike is accessible to most fitness levels.

Our Waddle:

    • Waddle duration: 3 hours 52 minutes
    • Distance: 9.96 km (9.18 miles)
    • Route: red, yellow, green
    • Map: link
    • Things to see: Oeschinensee Lake

The waddle starts at the cable car station, where you have several options on which route to take. Many people go to the lake and back up to the cable car station. However, we recommend taking the scenic route, which winds through flower-filled meadows, rocky ridges, and tranquil forests, with every turn revealing a new perspective of the turquoise lake below. The trail is well-marked and offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience or families with older children.

The terrain gets rocky, and you have to ascend fast, but at the beginning, it’s the most challenging; from there, the route gets easier and easier. The ascent also promises you the beautiful views you can expect.

Our first stop was at the panorama bench, which was occupied, but we took a break here anyway, as many other people did. We enjoyed the views of the lake below us, whose turquoise waters make it seem otherwordly. Oeschinensee is a sparkling turquoise gem tucked away in the Swiss Alps.

Oeschinensee was formed thousands of years ago during the retreat of ancient glaciers in the Alpine region. As the glaciers carved their way through the landscape, they left behind a natural basin that eventually filled with meltwater, creating the pristine lake we see today. This process, known as glacial lake formation, is standard in the Alps, but Oeschinensee stands out for its dramatic setting, encircled by towering peaks like the Doldenhorn, Fründenhorn, and Blüemlisalp.

The lake’s crystal-clear waters are fed by underground springs and glacial runoff, contributing to its vibrant blue-green hue. The surrounding cliffs act as a natural amphitheater, shielding the lake and giving it a sense of seclusion.

From the first break, we were again on our way, shuffling along the mountains. Each step we took gave us a different perspective of the lake.

The combination of its size, depth, and elevation makes Oeschinensee not only a natural wonder but also an ecological treasure, supporting diverse flora and fauna.

    • Depth. Oeschinensee reaches an impressive depth of approximately 56 meters (184 feet), making it a substantial body of water for its size.
    • Surface Area. The lake spans about 1.1 square kilometers (0.42 square miles), offering plenty of room for activities like boating and fishing.
    • Elevation. Nestled at an altitude of 1,578 meters (5,177 feet) above sea level, the lake is surrounded by alpine meadows and jagged cliffs, creating a striking contrast.

Our next break was at a vantage point where the whole lake was visible (well, almost the whole). And it made us think about local folklore.

Legend has it that Oeschinensee was created by the tears of maidens who once lived in the valley. These women were said to be mourning the loss of their loved ones, brave mountain men who ventured into the cliffs above and never returned. Their sorrow was so profound that their tears pooled together, eventually forming the lake. Some locals believe that you can still hear faint cries carried by the wind over the water on quiet nights. The legend adds a mystical charm to the lake.

We returned to the cable car station from our second break, but it took us around the lake and pastures for cows. We also stopped next to the lake to eat our pre-packed lunch and plunge our feet into the cold water. We wanted to do a whole-body swim, but the water was ice-cold.

One of the most delightful ways to experience the magic of Oeschinensee Lake is by renting a boat and gliding across its turquoise waters. Renting a boat here is simple, affordable, and adds a touch of adventure to your visit.

Boat rentals at Oeschinensee are reasonably priced, making it accessible for most visitors. The typical cost is around CHF 29 per hour for a rowboat, though shorter rental periods are often available for less. Remember that prices can vary slightly depending on the season, so it’s always good to confirm upon arrival.

Renting a boat is straightforward. Once you arrive at the lake, head to the boat rental station, which is conveniently located along the lakeshore. Staff members will guide you through the rental process.

At the boat rental station, you can typically pay using both cash (Swiss Francs) and credit or debit cards. However, it’s a good idea to carry some cash, especially if you visit during off-peak hours, as smaller operations in Switzerland sometimes have issues with card payment systems.

Oeschinensee Lake is also easily accessible via a shuttle service from the Oeschinen cable car station. The shuttle runs regularly, with departures every 30 minutes during the peak season, ensuring convenience for visitors. Tickets for the shuttle cost CHF 8 for a one-way trip or CHF 12 for a round trip, offering an affordable and quick way to reach the lake. The journey takes approximately 10 minutes, traversing picturesque alpine meadows and providing breathtaking views along the way. You can check the timetable online or at the cable car station to plan your visit seamlessly.

Oeschinensee’s beauty and mystery make it one of Switzerland’s most captivating alpine lakes. Its glacial origins, incredible depth, and storied history create a timeless destination. Whether hiking along its trails, boating on its waters, or simply sitting by the shore soaking in the scenery, the spirit of Oeschinensee will stay with you long after you leave.

So next time you visit this remarkable lake, remember that beneath its tranquil surface lies a story shaped by both nature’s power and the whispers of legend.

Enjoy Oeschinensee and waddle on!
