Explore Tauplitz This Summer: Hiking Routes, Alpine Lakes & Outdoor Activities
Tauplitz was one of the highlights of our road trip through Austria. We spent a few days here and quickly understood why it’s such a favorite for outdoor lovers. Although Tauplitz is well-known for winter sports and skiing, we came in the summer to explore a different side of the region. Set in the Ausseerland–Salzkammergut region, Tauplitz offers more than just dramatic alpine views; it also provides access to mountain trails, clear cold lakes, and a deep-rooted alpine rhythm that you feel the moment you arrive. At over 1,600 meters, the air is crisp, and the scenery is immediate. In summer, the lakes shimmer, and the paths wind through meadows and ridgelines. It’s the kind of place where hiking doesn’t feel like an activity; it feels like the reason you came. Tauplitz gives you space, silence, and a sense of something timeless. We didn’t want to leave.

Legends of Tauplitz
You know us, we can’t resist finding some interesting local legends. From mysterious whispers near the Sagtümpel spring to echoes on the Kulm ski jump, these local legends add a deeper layer to the landscape, where nature and memory blur.
The Whispering Waters of Sagtümpel
Just outside the village, along a forest trail near the Tauplitz waterfall, lies the karst spring known as Sagtümpel. On the surface, it’s a serene pool, clear, cold, and surrounded by moss-covered stones. But locals speak of it differently. They say that on quiet summer evenings, if you sit by the water and listen carefully, you can hear the faint sound of old mill wheels turning or even voices murmuring just below the surface. According to legend, these are echoes from the time when spring-powered sawmills and grain mills were scattered throughout the valley. Though the machinery is long gone, villagers believe the spirit of that industrious past lives on in the waters, whispering to those who pause and listen.
The Echo on the Mountain at Kulm
The Kulm ski jump, one of the most iconic ski-flying hills in Austria, has long drawn athletes from around the world. But beyond its reputation for records and snow, it holds a deeper, more mysterious legend. In the early morning cold, before crowds arrive and the sun fully rises, some skiers say they’ve heard a strange echo after launching into the air. It’s not wind or snowpack but something else. Locals believe it’s the mountain itself that cheers, encourages, and echoes the spirit of past champions who once soared there. The legend says the mountain never forgets those who gave it their courage. And when conditions are just right, it gives a voice back to their flight.

Beyond the natural beauty, there’s a quieter rhythm to discover, from historic chapels and rustic farmhouses to alpine huts and heritage buildings. Tauplitz offers a glimpse into the cultural soul of the region. Taking time to explore the town adds depth to the experience, grounding the dramatic landscapes in the lives and stories of the people who call this place home.

In Tauplitz, you can waddle about and enjoy the charm of the village without any rush. The atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming, with traditional alpine houses and flower-filled balconies that add to its beauty. At the heart of the village, a small square is located where locals gather, and visitors often stop to admire the view or enjoy a cup of coffee. From the square, quiet roads and narrow paths wind their way up into the surrounding hills, inviting you to explore further. Whether you’re strolling past cozy guesthouses or heading toward the meadows above, everything feels close, relaxed, and beautifully connected to nature.
Visit the Church of the Holy Cross (Kreuzkirche)
This 18th-century church stands quietly at the heart of Tauplitz, offering a moment of reflection and a glimpse into the village’s spiritual heritage. Built in 1752 and elevated to parish status in 1788, the Church of the Holy Cross features a late-Gothic crucifix, baroque elements, and a calming, timeworn interior. It’s a peaceful stop that reveals Tauplitz’s long-standing local traditions.

Explore the Historic Zinner-Villa
Tucked away in the Klachau area of Tauplitz, the Zinner-Villa is a historic hunting lodge built by Adalbert Ritter von Zinner. Though modest in scale, the villa carries the quiet elegance of early 20th-century alpine retreats. It reflects the era when aristocrats and artists sought peace in the mountains—an architectural time capsule surrounded by larches and stone paths.
Stop by Traditional Mountain Huts like Hollhaus and Grazer Hütte
Tauplitz’s alpine huts offer more than a meal; they serve mountain culture on a wooden platter. Hollhaus, built in the 1920s, and Grazer Hütte both sit along popular trails, inviting explorers to pause for local dishes such as Käsespätzle, Brettljause, or fresh strudel. These huts blend alpine hospitality with sweeping views and a sense of belonging, even if just for a lunch break.

Discover Ennstal Farmhouses and Alpine Barns
Waddling through the lower village or nearby meadows, you’ll spot traditional Ennstal farmhouses, solid wood homes with steep roofs, and sturdy barns weathered by time. These buildings reflect the architectural heart of the region: practical, beautiful, and rooted in farming life. Each one tells a quiet story of seasonal rhythms, alpine labor, and family histories.
