Saint Augustine Gate, known in Italian as Porta Sant’Agostino, is one of the grand entrances to Bergamo’s Città Alta, built in the late 16th century as part of the mighty Venetian Walls that still encircle the upper town. Walking through it feels like stepping back into the time when the Republic of Venice fortified the city to defend its mainland territories. When these walls were constructed, entire neighborhoods, churches, and even cemeteries had to be demolished to make space for the massive defensive system, completely reshaping the city’s landscape. Today, the gate welcomes visitors with sweeping views and a sense of quiet history, and, thanks to lk_lh_15 and loborosh, it now hides a small modern secret, too. One of our penguin stones is tucked nearby, adding a playful Lifeguin touch to centuries-old stone and inviting fellow waddlers to discover it.
