Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima, is a renowned destination in Japan that is famous for its natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural heritage. The island is most famous for Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The shrine is dedicated to the deities of sea, storms, and war. Its iconic “floating” torii gate, which appears to be floating on the water during high tide, is one of Japan’s most photographed landmarks. Mount Misen, the highest peak on the island at 535 meters, offers panoramic views and can be accessed via hiking trails or a ropeway. Another notable site on the island is Senjokaku (Toyokuni Shrine), an unfinished wooden hall built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the adjacent five-storied pagoda, both offering a glimpse into Japan’s architectural history. Thanks to luciakontsek and loborosh, now you can find a penguin stone on the island.
