Machu Picchu is a historical site located in the Andes Mountains of Peru and does not need an introduction. It has been on our bucket list for a while, and we were excited when tukesszino took a penguin stone to the location. Anyway, a few facts here. Machu Picchu was built by the Inca civilization in the 15th century during the reign of Emperor Pachacuti. It was brought to international attention in 1911 by American historian Hiram Bingham, although it was known to local indigenous people. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It sits at an altitude of about 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, so you have to waddle to get there. The exact purpose of Machu Picchu remains a subject of debate among historians. Some believe it was a royal estate, a religious site, or an astronomical observatory. Some researchers believe that the layout of Machu Picchu is aligned with astronomical events, such as solstices and equinoxes.
