Starý Smokovec is one of the oldest and most charming mountain resorts in the High Tatras, often called the historic heart of the range. Founded in the late 19th century as a spa destination, it quickly became a hub for alpine tourism, mountain railways, and grand hotels. Today, it is best known as the starting point of the funicular to Hrebienok, a gateway to popular hikes, waterfalls, and winter ice attractions. Starý Smokovec sits at around 1,000 meters above sea level, making it a perfect base for acclimatizing before heading deeper into the Tatras. During one peaceful stroll here, luciakontsek and loborosh took a penguin stone along on her adventure and carefully left it here, ready to surprise the next curious wanderer exploring this classic Tatra spot. Look for a wooden sign.
