Above the charming village of Tjørnuvík, known as the northernmost settlement in the Faroe Islands and famous for its black-sand beach with views toward the sea stacks Risin and Kellingin, you’ll come across a simple stone wall along the hiking trail. This is the first good place to pause on your way up, as the views begin to open over the clustered turf-roofed houses and the valley cradling the village. Tjørnuvík is also known for its Viking burial sites, which add to its historical significance. At this stone wall, we decided to leave behind a bit of surprise—a penguin stone now hidden within its rocks, waiting to be discovered by the next curious wanderer who stops to take in the view.
