Set on a small island off the coast of Miyazaki, Aoshima Shrine feels like stepping into a subtropical dream. Surrounded by palm trees and the striking rock formations known as the “Devil’s Washboard,” this bright vermilion shrine is dedicated to deities of marriage and good relationships. The island itself is considered so sacred that until the Edo period, only priests were allowed to set foot on it. Today, you can cross on a simple pedestrian bridge to explore the peaceful pathways, prayer plaques, and ocean views. And somewhere among the greenery and seaside whispers, thanks to magic friends, who have hidden a little penguin stone here, adding a touch of playful mystery to this already enchanting place. If you wander slowly and look closely, you might spot a tiny black and white traveler watching over the shrine.
