Château Betliar in Betliar, Slovakia, is a lavish 19th-century manor built on the site of a 15th-century fortress and once owned by the noble Andrássy family. Inside, it houses a rich historical library, ornate salons, and exotic curiosities, including an Egyptian mummy and samurai armor. One intriguing fact is that it once featured a polar bear enclosure beneath an artificial waterfall, the first of its kind in Europe. Surrounding the château is a vast English-style garden spanning over 50 hectares, filled with rare trees, romantic pavilions, fountains, and a dramatic waterfall, making it one of the most enchanting parks in Slovakia. We stopped here on our way to the east of Slovakia, and although we didn’t manage to go inside, we waddled in the gardens and found a perfect place to hide the penguin stone.
