Hallgrímskirkja, an iconic Lutheran parish church, dominates the Reykjavik skyline with its striking architectural design. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, its towering concrete facade and distinctive spire draw inspiration from Iceland’s dramatic natural landscapes, particularly the basalt column formations found throughout the island. Rising 74.5 meters, it’s one of Iceland’s tallest structures, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city from its observation tower. An interesting fact about Hallgrímskirkja is that the design of the building is said to have also been inspired by the shape of Thor’s hammer, as a nod to Iceland’s Viking age history. Thanks to petusica, who took several penguin stones on their family adventure, a penguin stone is also close by the church, chillin’ within the flowers.
