As we were already up at Calton Hill, the Dugald Stewart Monument is the one thing many come here to photograph. It looks like a classical Greek temple and honors the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart, a key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. It was built in 1831 by architect William Henry Playfair. An interesting fact is that despite its philosophical dedication, the monument has become more famous for its picturesque setting—frequently featured in postcards and travel photos, it’s one of the most photographed spots in Edinburgh. Now, close by are several stones, and a penguin stone also resides here. Hidden there with a view of the monument, but not from the classical vantage point.
