The Castle of Beckov lies on a steep 50-meter-tall rock in the village of Beckov. It was first mentioned in the year 1200 and was initially owned by the King. Later, at the end of the 13th century, it came into the possession of Matúš Čák. Different legends surround the history of the castle. One legend suggests that the castle derived its name from a jester named Becko, for whom the Duke Stibor had the castle built. Another legend tells the story of the castle lord having his servant thrown down from the rock because he protected his child from the lord’s favorite dog. Before his death, the servant pronounced a curse, saying they would meet again in a year and a day. True to the curse, the lord was bitten by a snake and fell down the same abyss precisely after that time. A penguin stone hides on a spot that will give you the best view of the castle.
