In the heart of Katowice’s revitalized Market Square, Flower Plaza (Plac Kwiatowy) is a vibrant urban oasis that beautifully illustrates the city’s transition from an industrial coal-mining hub to a modern, green cultural center. Adorned with seasonal floral displays, cascading fountains, and comfortable wooden benches, it serves as a central meeting point where locals and tourists can escape the city’s bustle. One of the most surprising features of Flower Plaza is that during the summer months, it becomes a tropical retreat. Since 2016, the city has decorated the square with huge Canary Island date palms. These iconic trees are actually “on loan” from the Municipal Palm House in the nearby city of Gliwice. They are descendants of palms brought to the region for an exhibition in 1924, making them a living piece of local history that turns a Polish city center into a temporary Mediterranean paradise. And thanks to tuskesszino, now a penguin stone hides here as well. Adding to the beauty of the square.
