The building that now houses HPM Pjazza Merkanti is rooted in Valletta’s layered past. Like many properties in the city, it began its life as a traditional Maltese townhouse, once part of the everyday rhythm of the capital rather than a place for travelers. Over the years, the structure witnessed Valletta’s evolution, from its baroque foundations to its role as a living, breathing city shaped by trade, culture, and local life. While transforming the building into a hotel, great care was taken to preserve its original character while adapting it for contemporary use. Historic elements were preserved and thoughtfully paired with design, allowing the space to tell its story without feeling frozen in time. HPM Pjazza Merkanti is located right in the heart of Valletta, set along one of the city’s historic streets, where daily life, culture, and landmarks naturally blend. From here, everything feels close and walkable. Cafés, restaurants, museums, and some of Valletta’s most beautiful squares are just a few minutes away on foot. Despite its central position, the hotel feels pleasantly tucked away, offering a sense of calm once you step inside, away from the busiest tourist routes.
Reaching the hotel is easy, whether you arrive from the airport, ferry terminal, or elsewhere on the island. From Malta International Airport, the journey takes around 20 to 25 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic. Ride-hailing services and local taxis are readily available and can drop you close to the entrance. If you prefer public transport, several buses connect the airport and other parts of Malta directly to Valletta’s main bus terminal, which is about a 10-minute waddle from the hotel. From there, it is an easy stroll through the historic streets. If you arrive by ferry from the Three Cities or Sliema, you can walk up into Valletta or take a short taxi ride, making the hotel well-connected from all directions.
It is worth noting that accessibility can be slightly challenging if you are arriving with a larger suitcase. Valletta is a historic city, and moving around often means waddling along cobblestone streets and uneven pavements. While this is very much part of the city’s charm, it does require a bit of patience when rolling luggage, especially on steeper sections or narrower streets.
We arrived by taxi straight from the airport, choosing the easiest option as we were eager to drop our bags and start exploring the city right away. The ride was smooth and surprisingly quick, and being dropped so close to the hotel, I arrived completely stress-free. It dropped us almost in front of the hotel.

The check-in experience was one of the most enjoyable we have had in a long time. As you enter the building, the reception is on the left, and from the moment you step in, it feels relaxed and genuinely welcoming. The process itself was quick and smooth, with all the practical information clearly explained, but what really stood out was the personal touch. Our host was friendly and chatty, and we ended up having a lovely conversation about Valletta and the surrounding area. He happily shared recommendations for places to see and explore, which already made us feel connected to the city. After check-in, he personally walked us to our room, explaining where everything was along the way and making sure we felt comfortable. He even offered to help with our backpacks, though we were traveling light and did not need it. For a small boutique hotel, this level of care and attention felt exceptional.
We also arrived earlier than the official check-in time, expecting to leave our bags and head out for lunch, but to our surprise, our room was already ready. Being able to settle in straight away felt like a real treat and set an excellent tone for the stay. After a smooth arrival, we dropped our things, freshened up, and headed out to explore Valletta without any waiting around, which we truly appreciated after traveling.
Check-in officially starts at 14:00, with check-out by 11:00 on the day of departure. The reception operates with set, limited hours, so it is essential to inform the hotel in advance if you plan to arrive late or outside standard times. Communication before arrival is transparent, responsive, and very helpful, making the whole process feel easy and reassuring. While the reception is not staffed 24/7, everything is well organized and thoughtfully handled, which aligns perfectly with the hotel’s small-boutique concept and personal approach.

HPM Pjazza Merkanti is an intimate boutique hotel with 18 rooms in total, spread across several thoughtfully designed categories. Guests can choose from Comfort Rooms with Sofa-Bed and Inner Courtyard View, Romance Rooms with Inner Courtyard View, Presidential Rooms with Square View and Traditional Maltese Balcony, and Presidential Square View Rooms with Balcony. Each room type is designed to suit different travel styles, whether you are visiting Valletta as a couple, a solo traveler, or for a longer city stay, while maintaining the same refined, modern atmosphere throughout the hotel.
We stayed in the Romantic Superior Double Room, and it truly lived up to its name. Designed with romance and calm in mind, the room felt intimate and thoughtfully laid out from the moment we stepped inside. The ultra-comfortable bed with a mattress and memory foam topper made resting effortless. At the same time, the signature shower-to-bed concept added a unique and slightly playful touch to the space. The room also featured a separate bathroom, a designer desk, and ample storage, creating a setting that felt both cozy and refined. It was the kind of room that invites you to slow down and enjoy being there, not just sleep and move on.
The room was fully equipped for a comfortable city stay. It included air conditioning and heating, daily room service, a king bed (or twin option), high-quality linen and towels, bathrobes, a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board, a safe, and a non-smoking setup. Practical touches such as a desk, alarm clock, telephone, television with cable and satellite channels, wireless and broadband internet, tea and coffee-making facilities, minibar, and mini fridge were provided. The bathroom featured a separate shower, and lift access made moving around the hotel easy. Everything was well thought out, practical, and in line with the boutique yet polished feel of HPM Pjazza Merkanti.
One detail that surprised us was the minibar. This was the first hotel we have stayed in where the minibar was fully stocked and included in the stay. Instead of the usual hesitation about touching anything, we were free to enjoy it without overthinking. It felt like a small but thoughtful gesture that added to the overall sense of welcome and care, and it fit perfectly with the hotel’s generous, guest-focused approach.
One important practical note to keep in mind is the electrical outlets. Malta uses British type plugs (Type G), so do not forget to pack a plug adapter if you are traveling from mainland Europe or elsewhere. Having one on hand will save you the hassle of searching for an adapter after arrival and make settling into your room much easier.

Another lovely feature of HPM Pjazza Merkanti is its terrace snack bar, which adds an extra layer to the overall stay. It is a relaxed space where you can enjoy light snacks and drinks while taking a break from exploring Valletta.
On our first day here, we headed to the terrace snack bar with the simple plan of having a light bite for dinner, as we had enjoyed a rather heavy lunch earlier that day. What started as a quick snack slowly turned into a relaxed evening with a bottle of wine and an unexpectedly lovely conversation with the staff. We chatted with a wonderful woman from Mexico working there, who enthusiastically shared recommendations of foods we absolutely need to try one day when we visit her country. Sitting there, wine in hand, talking and laughing while Valletta slowly lit up around us, felt like one of those spontaneous travel moments that stay with you long after the trip ends.
Breakfast
Breakfast is once again served on the rooftop terrace, which makes the morning feel special. Sitting above the city while Valletta slowly wakes up is the perfect start to the day. It’s served daily on the 5th floor from 7:30 am to 9:30 am, with the last replenishment at 9:10 am. Due to limited space, sharing tables is sometimes necessary, which adds to the hotel’s relaxed, boutique feel. In case of bad weather, such as rain or strong winds, breakfast trolleys are set up on the 2nd floor instead. The selection itself is well-balanced, with a variety of sweet and savory options, making it easy to find something whether you prefer a light breakfast or a more filling start to the day of exploring.

We stayed at HPM Pjazza Merkanti from Friday, 1 December to Sunday, 3 December, booking a Romantic Superior Double Room for two adults for two nights. The total price for the stay was €194.38, including 7 percent VAT. The base room rate was €181.66, plus €12.72 in VAT, and the full amount of € 194.38 was paid in advance. The booking was non-refundable, with the full amount charged if cancelled. However, it did include one free date change available until 28 November, which added a useful layer of flexibility.
Overall, the stay offered excellent value for money. The room was clean, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the rooftop terrace was a real bonus, adding atmosphere to both mornings and evenings. For a centrally located boutique hotel in Valletta with such a personal touch, the price felt justified and well spent.
