Arriving at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) marked the beginning of our journey along the French Riviera. Located approximately 7 kilometers from the heart of Nice, the airport offers various transportation options to reach the city center efficiently. Whether you prefer the affordability of public transit or the convenience of private transfers, understanding your choices ensures a smooth start to your visit.

Tram: Efficient and Economical

Let’s start with the most convenient one, and also our personal choice. Not many cities have a tram connection to the airport, so whenever there is such, we always take it. The Tram Line 2 provides a direct connection from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to the city centre, terminating at Port Lympia. The journey to the central Jean Médecin stop takes approximately 25–30 minutes, with trams running every 7 to 8 minutes on weekdays.

Tram Line 2 also connects with Line 3 at Grand Arénas, offering access to other parts of the city, including the Allianz Riviera Stadium.

How to Purchase Tickets:

Ticket machines are located outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, near the tram stops. In Terminal 1, the machine is located at the western end of the terminal, while in Terminal 2, it’s situated between exits A1 and A3.

We bought our tram tickets at the machine just outside the airport, near the tram stop. The process is quick and intuitive, with options in multiple languages. Also, payment via card was possible. Once we have our tickets in hand, ensure to validate them at the yellow machines before boarding. Validation is required as without it, the ticket isn’t valid for travel, and fines apply if checked. Place your ticket or card flat against the machine, where it says “Validez Ici” (validate here). These machines are also available at some tram stops.

The machines offer various ticket types, including:

    • Solo 1 trip: €1.70
    • Multi-trip tickets: Discounted rates for multiple journeys
    • 1 Airport round-trip: €10

There is also an app called Lignes d’Azur Tickets for purchasing public transport tickets in Nice. This app allows you to buy and top up tickets on your Lignes d’Azur card directly from your phone. It also allows you to view the details of your Lignes d’Azur card, including remaining trips and subscription expiration dates. However, because Nice is such a walkable city, we haven’t needed to use it.

Bus: Budget-Friendly Travel

If you are seeking a more cost-effective option, the Lignes d’Azur Bus Line 12 operates from the Aéroport / Promenade stop, located approximately 150 meters from Terminal 1. This route serves key destinations, including the Promenade des Anglais, Place Masséna, and the Old Town.

How to Purchase Tickets:

  • Tickets for Bus Line 12 can be purchased directly from the driver upon boarding. The fare is €2, and payment is accepted in cash only. Ensure you have small denominations, as drivers may have limited change.
  • Lignes d’Azur Tickets App.

Taxi: Direct and Convenient

Taxis are readily available at both terminals, offering a fixed fare of €32 to the city center. The journey typically takes around 13 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

  • Additional charges may apply for luggage, night travel, weekends, or public holidays.
  • Pre-booking a taxi or using ride-hailing apps can provide added convenience.

Private Transfers: Personalized Service

For a more tailored experience, private transfer services offer pre-booked rides from the airport to your accommodation. This option provides a meet-and-greet service, fixed pricing, and the comfort of a dedicated vehicle.

Advantages:

    • It is ideal for groups or travelers with significant luggage.
    • Eliminates the need to navigate public transportation with bags.
    • It offers a seamless transition from the airport to your destination.

Waddling: For the Adventurous

While not commonly recommended due to distance and luggage considerations, waddling from the airport to the city center is possible. The journey spans approximately 8.2 kilometers and takes around 1 hour and 38 minutes to complete.

Considerations:

  • Suitable for travelers with minimal luggage and a desire to explore on foot.
  • Be prepared for varying terrain and weather conditions.

Tips for a Smooth Journey

    • Ticket Purchases. Utilize ticket machines at tram and bus stations or download the Lignes d’Azur Tickets app to purchase and store tickets digitally.
    • Luggage Considerations. Trams and buses accommodate luggage, but for larger items, a taxi or private transfer may be more comfortable.
    • Travel Cards. Consider purchasing a stored-value travel card for €2 (non-refundable deposit) to use across trams and buses.
    • Schedules. Check the latest schedules and operational hours, especially during holidays or late-night arrivals.

Navigating from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport to the city center is straightforward, with multiple options available to cater to different preferences and budgets. Whether you opt for the efficiency of the tram, the economy of the bus, the convenience of a taxi, or the personalized touch of a private transfer, each mode offers a unique way to start your exploration of Nice.

Happy Exploring!
