How to get to Chmelnica
If you’re traveling by car, the village is located approximately 4 km northeast of Stará Ľubovňa, and the local roads provide a direct route, typically a 6–7 minute drive, depending on traffic. If you feel more adventurous in this rural area, you can take the ZSSK train from Stará Ľubovňa to Chmeľnica, with services running twice weekly(on Fridays and Sundays). The ride lasts around 4 minutes and won’t cost more than 5€. If you’re coming from farther away, such as Bratislava, expect a journey of around 6 ½ hours by train (transferring through Stará Ľubovňa and Poprad-Tatry, costing ≈ approximately €16–26) or 4 hours by car via the D1/D2 routes, covering roughly 370 km. Once you arrive at Chmeľnica station, the village center is just a short waddle away. However, if you are coming via public transportation, you might get stuck in Stará Ľubovňa, as not many buses or trains continue to the village.
Where to park in Chmelnica
If you arrive by car, please note that, as this is a village off the beaten path, you won’t find dedicated parking lots. However, you can still park along the main road, what was once the local grocery store—now closed—but still serves as a practical makeshift parking area when you’re exploring the village or heading into the nearby woods. Just be polite, leave space for residents, and avoid blocking any driveways or narrow lanes. A second option is to park at the end of the village, from where it’s just a short waddle to the rock formation. Also, if you see the nice lady who lives there in the cottage and mention to her, “Miško the penguin says Hi,” you might get a coffee 😉.
Waddling to Sharp Rock
To reach Sharp Rock, take Option 2 for parking, located at the end of Chmeľnica. From there, it’s about a 1 km waddle to your destination. The route is easy and recently improved, as the forest path has been cleared, making it much simpler to follow.
You’ll begin on a paved road, which soon transitions into a forest trail. Along the way, you’ll need to cross a shallow stream, but it’s easily manageable on foot. The waddle is gentle and scenic, making it a pleasant approach to the viewpoint.
The newly cleared path through the forest can be a little rough in spots, with uneven terrain and loose stones, so it’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes. Despite this, the short walk is well worth it. As you approach Sharp Rock, the formation itself may not appear much at first, just a small, weathered outcrop tucked into the trees. But don’t let its modest appearance fool you. Once you reach it and waddle up to the edge, you’re rewarded with unexpectedly stunning views across the valley and surrounding hills.
To waddle up the top of Sharp Rock, approach it from the right side, where you’ll notice a set of natural “stairs” carved into the rock itself. These rugged steps make the short climb easier and add to the adventure. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views—on a clear day, you can see the majestic High Tatras in one direction, their peaks rising sharply on the horizon. Turn the other way, and you’ll spot the historic Stará Ľubovňa Castle perched proudly above the town. It’s a perfect reward for a short, scenic waddle.
Once you climb back down from Sharp Rock, don’t head back right away, there’s more to discover just a short distance away. Tucked among the trees nearby is the so-called Devil’s Seat, a curious rock formation tied to local legend. According to old village tales, this was where the Devil himself would sit, surveying the valley and plotting mischief. The shape of the rock, smooth and slightly concave like a chair that you can sit on, adds to the eerie charm. Though the legend speaks of whispers in the wind and strange occurrences, today, it’s a peaceful spot, great for resting and taking in one more quiet moment before heading back.
