Slovakia is famous for many things, from its fairytale castles to its love for ice hockey, but lately, something new has joined the list: the country’s first and only Slovak whiskey. It’s made right here in the east of Slovakia, and we finally had the chance to waddle over and see what all the buzz is about.

We often find ourselves nearby, yet somehow it took us quite a while to visit the Nestville Distillery, and it turned out to be so much more than we expected. Whether you’re a whiskey fan, a curious traveler, or just looking for a fun family-friendly stop, this place has something for everyone. Read on to see what to expect, what to get ready for, and why a visit here is worth raising a glass to.

The Nestville Distillery isn’t just about whiskey; it’s about Slovak pride, craftsmanship, and a taste of something truly unique. As the first and only whiskey distillery in Slovakia, it offers a fascinating look at how local grain, pure water, and tradition come together to create world-class spirits. You can explore the interactive museum, watch the production process up close, and even sample a few golden drops at the end of the tour.

Reaching the Nestville Distillery is easy. It’s right along road number 77, making it easy to reach whether you’re driving from Stará Ľubovňa (just a few minutes away) or Poprad. The distillery sits directly beside the main road, so you can’t miss it, though we recommend keeping an eye out for the signs, as there are two separate entrances, and it’s easy to take the wrong one at first (we almost did!).

There’s a free parking lot available for visitors, located just a short waddle from the main entrance. During the summer and weekends, it can get a bit busy, so arriving earlier in the day is a good idea. The site itself is wheelchair-accessible and family-friendly, making it a smooth and welcoming stop for everyone.

Watch out for the right entrance

  • Name origin: “Nestville” combines NEST (meaning “nest” symbolizing home and tradition) and VILLE (short for “village”).
  •  Location: In the village of Hniezdne, just 5 km (3.1 miles) east of Stará Ľubovňa in the Upper Spiš region.
  • Historic roots: Written records confirm spirit production here as early as the 18th century.
  • Earliest mention (1747): Part of the rye grown below Ľubovňa Castle was given to the local gorzelnik (distiller) to make gorzalka, a grain-based spirit similar to whiskey. The alcohol was produced in the same way as whisky.
  • Revival of tradition: The company BGV s.r.o., based in Hniezdne, decided to restore this local heritage by founding the Nestville Distillery.
  • Morgenbesser family legacy: Inspired by historic distillers from Stará Ľubovňa, Nestville continues the region’s centuries-old craftsmanship.
  • Today: The distillery proudly produces Slovakia’s first and only whiskey, blending old techniques with modern innovation.
  • Distillery & Museum Tour. Learn about the whiskey-making process, from grain to glass, with interactive exhibits and historic equipment.
  • Nestville Chocolate Museum. Watch chocolate being made, taste samples, and pick up sweet souvenirs.
  • Artisanal Village. Explore traditional Slovak crafts, woodworking, and local products made right on-site.
  • Mini Farm. A family favorite, meet friendly animals like goats, ponies, and rabbits.
  • Restaurant & Café. Enjoy Slovak dishes, desserts, and of course, a sip of whiskey or local spirits.
  • Gift Shop. Find souvenirs, Nestville whiskey bottles, and handmade products to take home.
  • Playground Area. Safe and fun space for children to enjoy while adults explore or relax.
  • Seasonal Events. From Easter markets to Christmas festivities and summer tastings, there’s often something special happening.

Plan to spend around 2 to 3 hours at the Nestville Distillery and Park to fully enjoy everything it offers. The guided distillery tour itself takes about 60–90 minutes, but you’ll want extra time to stroll through the museum, stop by the chocolate shop, or relax with a drink or dessert at the café. If you’re visiting with kids, the mini farm and playground will easily keep you there a bit longer.

Our Waddle Through Nestville

After talking about visiting Nestville for what felt like ages, we finally made it, and from the very first moment, it didn’t disappoint. The entrance alone sets the tone with its beautiful setup, warm atmosphere, and attention to detail that instantly draws you in.

What we really liked was how the Nestville experience is divided into three parts, each offering a different glimpse into Slovak craftsmanship and tradition:

  • The Historical Section: an exhibition of folk crafts showing how life and production once looked in the region.
  • The Modern Section: one of the most advanced refineries in Central Europe, where the whiskey magic happens.
  • The Traditional Section: the Carving Hall, home to the largest wooden relief in Europe, a masterpiece that alone makes the visit worth it.

The exhibition begins at the “Zvonica” (Bell Tower), where your guide rings the bells to officially start the tour, a charming and memorable way to kick things off.

Before moving on, there’s time to take photos, either solo or with your group. The guide even takes pictures for you, and you’ll receive them at the end of the tour as a lovely keepsake.

From there, the tour continues into the historical section, where you’ll discover how whiskey is made from scratch and learn about the traditional methods used centuries ago. The setup is interactive and engaging; you can even step into parts of the exhibition and try hands-on activities, like minting your own coin to take home as a unique souvenir.

After finishing the historical section, the tour smoothly transitions into the modern part of the distillery, where you get a glimpse of how production looks today. The guide leads you through parts of the production lines and silos, explaining each step, from storing the grain to distilling and aging the whiskey.

It’s fascinating to see how tradition meets cutting-edge technology here, with modern equipment operating alongside time-honored techniques. What surprised us most was learning that most of the alcohol produced at Nestville is actually exported abroad, while only a smaller portion stays in Slovakia. It really shows how far this Slovak distillery has come, from local roots to a global reach.

One thing to note is that when you enter the part of the distillery where the yeast is made, be prepared for the smell to hit you right away. It’s definitely strong, but also fascinating to see such a massive amount of yeast all in one place, bubbling away as part of the whiskey-making magic.

After that, the tour wraps up in the Nestville Tavern, where the atmosphere shifts from industrial to cozy and warm. If you’ve chosen the extended ticket, this is where you can enjoy your whiskey tasting, a perfect ending to the experience. And just when you think it’s over, there’s one more little surprise waiting that makes the finale even more fun.

One of the most fun parts of the tour was the chance to pour your own bottle of whiskey for ~€23.99.

Here’s how it goes:

  • You take your place at the bottling line in the Tasting Room, where the guide helps you pour whiskey from a single oak barrel into your own glass bottle.
  • Next, you need to seal your bottle and apply a sticker with its serial number, barrel number, and maturation date — every bottle is unique.
  • It’s trickier than it looks! We struggled especially with placing the sticker straight (no surprise, precision is harder after a few pours 😉).

This hands-on finale turned the visit from a guided tour into something personal and playful, a souvenir you really helped create.

Another unique option at Nestville Distillery is the chance to buy your own whiskey barrel and let it mature right there on-site. The team will store it safely in their cellar, allowing the whiskey to age under the perfect conditions until it reaches your preferred maturity. It’s a fantastic idea for collectors, whiskey enthusiasts, or even as a truly special gift, imagine returning in a few years to taste your very own Slovak whiskey straight from the barrel.

Overall, our impression of Nestville was genuinely positive. The place feels modern yet authentic, combining traditional craftsmanship with fresh, creative energy. Even though the distillery itself is relatively new, there’s plenty to learn, from history and production to fun, hands-on experiences. And what makes it even better is that there’s something for everyone: whiskey lovers, families, and curious travelers alike. Whether you come for the tasting, the chocolate, or just to explore, Nestville Park leaves you with a smile and maybe even a bottle (or barrel!) of your own creation.

And then came our favorite part, the Nestville Chocolate Shop, which also doubles as a cozy restaurant and café. For us, it was all about the chocolate. We couldn’t resist trying their hot chocolate, sampling a few of the handmade pralines, and of course, taking a little stash home for later. Each piece is rich, smooth, and incredibly sweet, especially the white chocolate, so consider yourself warned if you’re more of a dark chocolate fan!

While you sip and savor, the kids can have their own fun at the playground right outside, where a giant stork statuestands proudly in the middle, a playful symbol of the village of Hniezdne (whose name actually means “nest”). The only downside? Access to the playground isn’t included in the main ticket, so there’s a small extra fee and a limited playtime. Still, it’s a lovely spot to relax, recharge, and end your Nestville visit on a sweet note, quite literally.

Apart from the distillery and chocolate shop, Nestville Park offers plenty of other activities and attractions that make it easy to spend half a day (or more!) here. Whether you’re just passing through or planning a longer stay, there’s something for everyone:

  • Local Market. Browse and shop for handmade Slovak products, crafts, and local delicacies.
  • Ice Rink (Winter Season). Enjoy some skating fun when the weather turns cold, perfect for families and couples alike.
  • Horse Area. Visit the friendly horses next to the apartments; kids especially love this part.
  • Apartments. Stay overnight in cozy on-site accommodation if you want to explore the region at a slower pace.

There’s truly a lot to see and do here, a great mix of learning, tasting, and relaxing. You can easily spend half a day exploring all corners of Nestville ParkFor the latest information, seasonal events, or to plan your visit, check out the official Nestville website.

We went in with high hopes and left mostly pleased, but with a few mixed feelings. Here’s what worked (and what didn’t) in our experience.

Pros
  • Beautifully designed, modern, and well-maintained exhibitions
  • Lots to see and interact with, from history to production to art
  • Free parking right on-site
  • Very close by if you’re in the Stará Ľubovňa / Poprad region
  • Family-friendly, there’s something for kids (playground, animals)
  • Multiple attractions in one place (chocolate, distillery, market, accommodation)
Cons
  • The price feels a bit steep compared to regional attractions
  • Some attractions (playground, extra experiences) cost extra beyond the basic ticket
  • During peak times, parts can be crowded or service can be slower.
  • Certain areas feel a bit artificial or overly staged.

If you’re already in the area, it’s worth stopping by. Even with its few drawbacks, Nestville Park brings together craft, fun, and flavor in one attractive package. For a relaxed half-day trip filled with variety, this place hits the mark.

Pack your bags and get your taste buds ready for Nestville Park!
